Immersion and Role Play

I know I'm not going to get a lot of very positive feedback right now, as it being a beta, I highly doubt there has been many people trying to seek enjoyment out of the game in the said aspects, however, this is something that is very important to me in a game. I'm not at all like the casual gamer... maybe that isn't the right word... I'm not at all a PvP'er or raider. My forte is exploring, enjoying the game through immersion and role playing. For those of you who do not know what TRUE role playing is, it is playing the role of your character to the highest level... this really goes back to the days of D&D, as D&D isn't just a game that uses a math algorithm for leveling and character stats, but also had a huge storyline aspect. Role Playing is making a story for your character and acting it out on a level that makes your character appear more real and apart of the world he or she is partaking in. To put simple, Role Playing is merely acting, playing the role of your character in the game. One of the things that instantly hooked me to keep an eye on this game was the level of character customization the game offered, (at the very least on a cosmetic level). I guess what I want to know is, PvP, Questing, and Raiding aside... how much is this game going to appeal to a role player on an immersion level? Does the game mechanics offer a lot of useful tools to allow for good role playing?

Now, I know that the quality of a game and the role play it offers doesn't really count on the game itself, but more so the community that participates. Just trying to get an idea of what the game offers on these aspects. Thank you!

Honestly, there isn't much Roleplaying in Aion, only because they are making up the story, they didn't take it from a Book like LOTRO, or years of lore like WoW or WAR.

I would recommend to you LOTRO or WoW... WAR not so much.

Ah, thank you for the reccomendation, but I'm already an established leader of a Heavy Role Play guild on LOTRO. Just trying to find a new universe to have a stab at Role Playing in.

And to the other, thank you for the Link. I'll check it out.

In any MMO I try out I always try and think of ways I could potentially role play. WoW, being a player for over four years, has been my RP mainstay but it's gotten rather old. I think RP in Aion has potential!

I don't even think Aion has RP servers (or any sort of server types? could be wrong) either, but perhaps when launch comes closer players will name an unofficial RP server (like what happened in LotRO).

You are dealing with Angelic creatures that have a good bit of lore about them already written...of course this will attract Role Players, Scocializers and Lore Monkyees. The Golden dawn a huge huge FFXI RP Linkshell is migrating to Aion...you will find many of them hanging out at Aionroleplayers.com . There is this huge misconceptions that only hardcore PVPers will be playing AIon,  This game is going ot have a very deverse audiance, and that is by design.

Aion is conducive to roleplaying, as the lore is very prevalent and they have an abundance of emotes, not to mention the customization that you have already mentioned.

Also, on the beta boards, there were discussions about RP servers and the fact that NCSoft isn't known for their "server diversity", rather putting things like roleplaying on the shoulders of the players. That being said, many of the people responding were mentioning the fact that even if there weren't RP servers, there would be RP guilds taking the lead and being the forefront of the RP community in Aion.  I, for one, would love to see something like that and would be eager to join if implemented fairly.

Dude you can have role play in a cardboard box if you want..... I think what you meant is lore, and while the lore is brand new it's well done and easily role playable.

The world is very detailed, not in a textured sense but in a sense that there's critters running away from you as you approach, spiders coming down from tree branches, just a lot of cool wildlife and great scenery, from what I can tell everything in game actually has a meaning and an explanation in the lore from not being able to fly all the time to harvesting.

I vote this is great world to RP in.

I agree.  The world is not perfect in some aspects, but it definitely "breathes" and feels like it's a real place.  There are distinct changes and even emotional feelings you get from different zones and the lore present throughout various quests (and just talking to NPC's).  I won't deny that there are a few immersion killers, but I think they are minor and easily overlooked considering the fun that you can have (at least I felt that way).

The only limit to the possibility for RPing is one's imagination, of course... but, honestly, I didn't feel like I had to stretch my imagination a whole lot to see RP possibilities in Aion (a good thing...).  I think it will be *very* easy for players to RP in Aion (I know that I will gladly do my best).  In fact,  the lore is not only vague about what happened when the Balaur entered the Tower of Eternity... it actually contradicts itself based on what race you play.  This provides a nice grounds for conflict and unanswered questions that require growth and exploration to "answer".  With each race believing the other is to blame for the destruction, RP'ers could easily think up backstories and motivations for why their characters are doing what they are doing in the context of the game world.

As I played over the most recent beta weekend, I kept finding myself mentally journalling "notes" for my character's backstory as I moved through the world.  Clearly, there is a strong community desire to RP (e.g., Golden Dawn's migration to Aion), and likeminded people will always prove that where there's a will, there's a way.
