Nostalgia has already kicked in and I doubt any game will ever seem "improved" over EQ1 as a result of my awesome experiences there (was my first mmorpg, played for years). But had I been given EQ2 and EQ1 in 1999 I probably would have called nearly everything an improvement. At least insofar as mechanics go. The zones are more complex and realistic looking (less empty), the graphics are better, the questing/crafting system would have seemed FAR better, etc.

no matter how good the new games are everyone has a nostalia game that nothing ever compares to.for me its the old days of eqlive.befor soe took it over, befor even ruins of kunark came out. back when people fought for the bandit camp to turn in sashes in qeynos. or the dreaded RUN DVINN IS ON THE LOOSE!!!!!!!!! in crushbone. the non stop trains in unrest and the frantic run to the zone as you get hit with the ghoul root curseing pls wear off im 2 steps from the zone.
yup nothing will ever be as good as eqlive befor any expansions.

I feel the same way, EQ1 was an amazing game, but now i tseems less people are in the origonal zones where all the fun was, and care more about XP and Leveling up, than they do exploring and the origonal risk taking all the season players (those to played at launch) I myself started at Kunark, and the game started getting less fun after Luclin. I miss the old days to running sashes from the bandit camp to queynos so i could get a weapon n sell for 1pp lol those were the good ole days

And how about Dorn He got me so many times early that after I got high enough I used to run by and kill him every time I was close
I think the biggest improvment over EQ1 is the quest system. And a close second is the crafting system.
Now, I can only judge this from 1999-2001 EQ. So I'm basing this on MY experiences from EQlive.
