I recently got enough interetest to order AoC again and put in my 1-year old game card and as it happened the game also required me to "activate" it in addition to "just paying and getting to play". Here is what they replied:
Greetings,
It was through your error that your account wasn't reopened. You needed to have reactivated your account.
That is pretty standard with any game, if you wish to play it, you have to activate it.

Now, this claim that most game require an activation in addition to payment is just ridiculous. Most games I have played just demand you pay and asap you play already. I demanded refund since I got "pissed off" and went to play other game.

I just resubbed to AoC after the latest patch, all I had to do was re-enter my card details and 10 mins later I was playing, didn't have to "reactivate" anything other than handing over some money.
Only issue I had with resubbing was that it took 10 mins for the game to know I had paid to play, other than that no problems.
Well I was just about to write about it but, to seemingly behind the activate button there is payment options for "credit card" to get your account activated. My game card was solid and the database accepted it as normal so why should I pay for another month to get my account activate.
Hmmmm sounds like there was a problem with your account activation code. I assume you had an account previously that worked and reinstalled the game and updated with the original disks. I resubbed not too long ago after 9 months of not playing. I had no issues whatsoever.
Do you still have the original documentation for the game?? Were you able to log into Funcoms account management system with your old credentials?? Heck it's been almost 6 years since I played AO and my account and toons are still there.
If you can access your account in the Funcom system, there should be no problems. If they are telling you to activate an account, then that means one does not exist and you need your old activation key. That would be a rare instance but I'm sure it could happen. Any game that requires a game key, which to the CS head's credit is true, must be entered to activate an account. If yours is no longer active it could be a glitch, or it could be for a reason your not telling us. Either way you may still end up having to buy a new game to get a new key.
Are you sure they will charge your credit card? Maybe they just need the info to have complete account info.

Ok looks like you can access your account info. IT seems like you need a credit card to 'ACTIVATE' your account. There are alot of games that require a credit card to play, even if it not being used to fund the account.
They dont charge your credit card, but you need to have one to have an open account. Maybe its because of the game's mature rating.

There are several MMO's that I have played that require you to punch in a credit card for activation when you enter time cards, or free trials or what not. They do not charge the card if you are using a game time card. I believe they did this with Anarchy as well. Also DAoC I remember having to activate my trial account with a CC before getting my free time.
