Well, not an MMO but you were speaking of games in particular in this article, Neighbours from Hell was an awesome comedy game!

Heat, pressure and time. The three things that make a diamond, also make a waffle.
    Also known as Ardanwen.

    Earthbound MMO!

  • alkennjoialkennjoi Member Posts: 101

wow you are really stretchign it now... is ther really nothign else out there to waste your time on aside from writing randomly thought up ideas for MMO forums content?  This article - no, this concept is so epic fail its not even funny!   OMG did i just make a pun?

AAAANyway, what people think is funny today is different tomorrow.  Comedy is relative to teh times.

just think of what some elements of a comedy MMO migth be if it were made some 3 or 4 decades ago...  I can envision lots of racist and sexist and bigoted concepts that woudl be perfectly acceptable - but in to days world such comedy would not be tolerated.

aside from the above - who gives a shit about being pwned by rick ashely or whever the fuck.

    article = epic fali

This is the stupidest idea I've heard in awhile.

And just goes to show why mmorpg.com writers shouldn't be mmorpg designers.

The genre already has enough crap in it -- I mean we can't even get the basic design of combat, usability, end-game, etc right. It isn't appropriate for us to be wasting time on half-baked ideas.

Yes, because discussions where people are thinking out of the box are certainly a waste of time, right?

If everyone had the narrow view that you're showing here, checkers and backgammon would be the only games around. Crawl back into your hole, troll.

Oh please, sitting on your high horse doesn't get rid of the fact this idea is terrible.

If there ever were a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy MMO, there would be an enormous amount of humor.  They should make an MMO based on The Princess Bride...the best rated PVP player would become the new Dread Pirate Roberts.

And honestly, chill out buddy.  Dana might have the basis for an idea, and then someone on the forum might say something t hat would lead to his idea actually panning out.  He is just suggesting something new for once, I am tired of the orcs and all the bull that these companies pump out every few years.

No. It's a bad idea. Period. Comedy can't be done well in an MMO. Wanna know why? Because comedy getd old. K.

Dungeon Runners did it pretty well. It's also one of the few MMO's that has voice-acted NPC, and I'd also like to point out that the voice acting is well-done and quite funny.

Personally, I'd love to see an attempt at an MMO based off of RickRolling people. I can see it now: "You May Get RickRoll'd: The Survival Horror MMO Of The Decade!"

Actually taking a leaf out of the way the MMO genre is heading we would need to fulfil three criteria:

The jokes would have to be as dumb ass as possible so everyone can understand them.

The punch line has to be delivered very quickly, no delay in case braindead players forget the build up to it.

PvP comedy can’t be like Monkey island, long wordy exchanges, keep it simple: “You’re a prat”…”No you are”

That way the lowest common denominator is kept happy and that’s all we care about right?

I always appreciate humor in mmo's.  But humor is a loaded gun and people in our society are so sensitve and quick to take offense.

NCSoft has a funny MMO that doesnt take anything seriously. Dungeon Runners might be the closest thing to a comedy MMO so far.

Doh didn't see that post before mine about DungeonRunners

I was JUST coming to post about Dungeon Runners after reading the (not so amusing) flood of Dana's text and you and others have already done that.

So I can only recommend that again for some fun usually not seen in MMOs.

I belive comedy in MMO's is best created by the user. Give us the tools to make a joke and we'll make your game funny.

Well, games get old too (Which includes mmos) does that mean a game can't be done well?

Apples and oranges. Next time use your brain before attempting logic, it seems a bit hard for you right now.

You cannot compare the way comedy gets old to the way games/cars/houses/etc get old. Why? Comedy is very unique to each individual. It doesn't have any really longevity unless the comedy is done by a genius like George Carlin. Yah, games get old, but not in the same way. GOOD games last long enough for people to play them before they get boring -- because good games have depth beyond just their intial merit -- UNLIKE comedy. Want proof? Here's a simple test:

Go play your favorite game right now until you get bored with it.

Now go watch a comedy skit on youtube over and over until you are done with it.

At the end measure how long you spent doing each.

Do this every day for a year.

Tell me what you enjoyed doing more, and tally up the total minutes spent on each.

    Go do it. Now.

One man's comedy is another man's tragedy, insult, slur, degradation, reason for lawsuit.

No, a "comedy" mmo will not work.

An mmo with comedic elements ( such as Dungeon Runners ) will.

  • windasmwindasm Member UncommonPosts: 86

I'm not sure how a mmo comedy would work because a developer would have to keep  creating new original joke content  all the time. Plus you can see all the various tastes in comedy just from a few of the posters above.

I think the piano dropping on somebodys head was funny because it brought back memories of me watching the Road Runner cartoons when I was a kid  :)  That''s a cartoon though and I think it would be really hard for a developer to make it look funny in a mmo .

Parody comedy (if that's how you spell it) can be funny  if you know what they're aiming at.

There already is one, it's Darkfall.

not be an ass..... but it would be a way for them to steal comedy ideas from people

While I hate to be negative about this, I have to say that this is a great idea in the immediate fantasies of a devs head, and a terrible idea overall.

Such a game will rely either on consistent and extensive updates/expansions (cuz old material gets old quickly), or user generated content. If it is well funded and constantly updated, ok... but why not just watch cartoons/stand-up comedy? Isn't that more or less what you're doing? What will make the experience unique from other media?

On the user generated content... people are shit, and have miserable senses of humor. This is why professional comedy writers have jobs. Also, given the freedom that this would require, there will be at least one ass who will ruin the game for everyone by creating penis-monsters/litering the world with graphity of racial slurs and nudity.

Title of said game: Virtual Internet Online

While the concept of a comedy MMO might work, it would be a very small niche market for most of the reasons mentioned above.

You want innovation, try a romance MMO.  Ya a Romance.  Not as stupid as it might sound.  How many people watch the same "Daytime Drama" for years, decades even.  How many players want to have a romantic element added to their games? KOTOR had it, so have many other games.

The Female market could be explosive to MMOs, they aren't as flighty as their male counterparts and tend to be very loyal to the shows, games, and brands they enjoy.

The MMO space is uniquely suited to that market segment though no one has ever shown interest in developing a game to their tastes.  Women like the social aspects of games more than most males do, yet most games gloss over those very interactions.  Im not talking about making a porno MMO but one more based in socialization and much less based on violence.
