Hey there
I've got some questions about AION gameplay, specificaly about weapons.
I'm a big mmo enthusiast, played /tried many like AO, EQ2, WOW, AOC, PS, WWIIONLINE, EVE, DAOC, L2, etc...
one type of game I don't like is the so called "korean grinder" type, like Lineage 2.
i'm not saying the game is bad or anything, so no need to flame me, I'm just saying i'm not the target audiance.
I hate the fact that there is a VERY limited set of weapons/armor to choose from. I tried to find the info elsewhere but didn't find much: how is it in AION ?
I know items are socketable so that should add some variety. But is it as in L2 with 3 different weapons to choose from in shops ? -_-
(edit: clarifying thread title)
Comments
You asked too early, unless you are asking people that played korean or chinese launched version of aion.
Weapons in Aion that I know of (Types):
Daggers, Swords, Polearms, Staves, Great Swords, Clubs, Bows, Books, Orbs, Shields. These are the types of weapons I know of so far, not sure if there are more.
Each weapon basically have a dominating stat. Daggers for examples are as usually fast and very low damage, however the crit rate is incredibly high compare to other weapons.
Generally each class have weapons better suited for them. Each class can at least use 2 type of weapon to good efficiency, and of course some class can use many weapons. Example Gladiators. On the other hand some jobs tend to want to stick with 1 main weapon with a different type of weapon as backup for situations.
Hope this sorta answers some of your questions at least.
EDIT: Adding some stuff about armor and customizing.
Armor have 4 types. Cloth, Leather, Chain, Plate (Nothing new here, but there really isn't a better way when classifying)
Each armor have of course base evasion and defense stats, based on which level/tier the armor is. There are also additional stats to the base stats as bonus and variety for the same armor. Then there are the sockets for manastones.
A noteworthy point is that they claim to have a system in place which allow you to exchange the stat of one piece of equipment with the appearance of another through some sort of armor combining system. It basically let you customize appearance while keep the stats of your favorite armor. I am however not very familiar with this system, since beta is only level 1-10, not much experience on that yet. Of course there is also the coloring customization that NCsoft advertised to be in the game for armors.
That is all I have to add
well, no, it wasn't really my question.
i know there will be multiple type of weapons.
my question is more like, if for example i use swords, how many swords will i have to choose from for my level range ?
3 ?
in most games you can choose from a variety of weapons in a given category...
i like having a weapon, and looking at the AH to find if there is a better one, or loot one from a mob and go "yay ! better stats than mine !"
which wasn't the case in L2. hence my question.
Then, yes there are some varieties to the weapons in Aion in the same level range of the same type of weapon. However to what degree I am unclear, in beta the variety isn't alot since its only level 1-10. At higher level it is likely to have much more variety than what I seen.
EDIT: However, in NPC shop the weapon you get is as usual a basic weapon with no bonus stats till you find/craft/quest a better one. NPC shop for weapons don't get you much variety, since it's NPC shop.
There is usually a good selection of weapons and you'll find yourself more often than not equipping yourself from random drops. All green weapons and higher give one of three additional stats like more Attack, or critical rate or HP etc. You can customize your weapons a lot and equip manastones on them to customize them even further. The drops are more akin to WoW than Lineage 2, these drops aren't super rare like the 1/60000 chance some items have in L2. Mainly because it isn't a grind.
i'm so glad to hear that.
is it the same for armor ?
yes. though many of your armor/weapons look the same, they're called diferent, have diferent quality and effects.
I've been playing 7months in korean servers and i'm korean.
this is mostly true and Aion's weapon variety in certain level tier is very large.
For example at around lvl 45-50 tier if your Gladiator you can choose weapon type
as dual wielder 'dagger/dagger' 'sword/dagger' 'sword/sword' 'club/sword' 'sword/club'
(On all each setup there's certain meaning of it and difference, good side/bad side)
or as two hander 'polearm' 'two handed sword'
or as defensive tanker sword/shield.
and for each weapon type you've got to find one from about 5-10 kinds of weapon to use by your status of money.
if you are poor you've got to choose one from green/blue category theres 6-8 variety weapon in 45-50 tier.
If you have enough cash you can choose one from gold category theres 3-5 variety weapon in 45-50 tier.
And bad news.. there's some kind of grind about getting super quality weapon.
For example 'Zaphiel's Spear' this one, only 4 Spear was dropped for 6months and it cost around 1000$ to buy.

I'm pretty sure you mean 1000 in-game currency... if not that's crazy.
edit: i just remembered that 1000 is not a lot in Aion. $1000!? jeez...
Surely its real dollar when korean won exchanged to dollar, its about 1000$.
No way to get that value's weapon. It has really powerful stats and making great difference when you equip it.
I heard something like this old day
"in WOW, if you equip Azinos(Azinoth?) dual wielded, you've got to click things and slaughter"
guess this kind of situation is happening on Aion by rule of Economy(money) not Raid.
No I am relatively certain they mean $1000 cash.
In Korea it is not too uncommon to buy and sell items. In times past I read about a pair of friends who won the "sword of doom" basically in a contest on their MMO. One friend sold it while the other was away on vacation. Upon returning to learn that his precious item was gone, the man murdered his friend, by sword.
The Koreans do not mess around when it comes to MMOs. $1000 is probably low end on the scale of MMO items bought and paid for by Korean power gamers.

By doing a simple search I was able to find this quote. I was wrong it was a Chinese man who stabbed his friend over the sword. But, the Chinese do not take gaming quite as seriously as Koreans.
"41-year-old Shanghai man is accused in the stabbing death of videogaming competitor over stolen virtual weapon. Qiu Chengwei and Zhu Caoyuan jointly won the virtual sword for the MMORPG game Legend of Mir 3. Qiu lent the weapon to Zhu who subsequently sold it for 7,200 Yuan. Zhu had promised half the proceeds to Qiu, but Qiu, upset about the loss of the virtual weapon, went to Zhu's house and allegedly stabbed him, repeatedly in the chest, to death."
Yup. 1000$ isn't that expensive for Korea's biggest number 1 popular mmorpg endgame's supreme quality weapon.
They used to sell home and care for ingame items :P
I didn't think Zaphiel's Spear would go around $1000, but then again prices differ alittle in each server. I've heard the last Menotios Dagger went for 350mil kinah the last time it dropped on Kashinelle server. 100mil is roughly around $200 so, I'm betting it was sold around $700-$800.
It's not surprising that Zaphiel's Spear went for $1000 though. If I remember correctly Zaphiel's Spear streches and has about as good stats as Menotios, slightly less. And Menotios Spear doesn't even strech...different types of them strech between the two series.
Anyways...upper end gear can cost you fortunes in this game. I haven't been crafting much lately, but the last time I did, I succeeded 4 lvl45 gold craft daggers and sold each one of them for around $200. Of course, they weren't this expensive before the 1.2 patch, but people crafting weapons have decreased tremendously in the last couple weeks, so prices are extremely inflated.
GRIND sucks? You wanna be max level in a month?
Since when did society award easy-goers and lazy-fools?

Nevermind!
Wow... $1000 is way too ridiculous of a price for a weapon. If only I was rich enough to spend thousands on a virtual weapon... Not that I would, but having that much money must be fun!
The AionArmory gives you an idea on the amount of weapons and armors and a lot of other things like quests, titles, crafting materials. Good thing to read before you jump into the game.

Not sure if this was added yet, but most of the weapons stated here also have an "extendable" version of it. Basically meleers get weapons that have chains attached to the segmented blades (when you swing it in game you'll be treated to a full animation, not just autoswinging from a distance). These weapons extend your range by 10m? so just over half the max caster distance.
I don't know how they calculate distances in the game, but if you go to Inven it's says in the item database that Zaphiel's Spear is extendable with 6.0 distance.
I'm gonna assume it's the same for Two-Handed Swords, but daggers and swords have 4.0 strech distance, and trust me, it's really good.
My current weapons settings on my assassin is lvl50 BlackHeart Dagger & lvl50 Ranmark Dagger, they both strech (you have to have both extendables for them to work if you are dual-wielding), and although the natural stats on the weapons lack accuracy and 4% in aspd. This setting lets you attack from a safe distance against most of the opposite faction melee classes, and makes up for the couple of misses, especially against other assassins.

To say it simple .
I would say you can look at Aion as it is Lineage 3 in a 2009 version , with all the aspect from other game.
Its simular to L2 in a new HOT version.
System Specc
Intel I7 4770K 3,5 ghz
16Gb RAM 1600 mhz
Nvidia GTX 780
Holy shit, I didn't understand any of that except it is simple. It is NOT Lineage 3, it is not open world mass pvp like the Lineage series intends to be. It is more like a PvP version of WoW with a hint of DAoC. It is made to cater to as many audiences as possible whereas L2 was intended for a Hardcore PvP crowd.
It's not the weapons themselves that are the cool finds but the stones you can use to upgrade them. Same result, but just shifting the cool/difference factor to a different item.
- RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right?
- FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
Anyone know the linking chances of manastones in this game?
100% per stone?
You mean chance to succeed to socketting mana stone to gear?
affected by gear level and mana stone level and gear grade(green, blue, gold).
for gold gear that has 4 sockets chance to succeed is like 50-75% i think.
Sometimes horrible sometimes easy to socket all four stones..
Mostly up to luck.
Drats
Still better than the % chance in Shiaya.
there are actually quite a few weapons to choose per level for your character though they all appear to be somewhat similar and you can change the skin of the item to something you like better after level 30 , You can also add manastones and godstones to weapons to further customize stats as well as enchant the weapon though I havn't really found much info on the enchanting or how its done I have seen a few
Also as posted before check out Aion Armory and below are a few examples of the extending weapons , and as far as I can see the skins may be used on higher level weapons , though I am still checking into it for a guaranteed answer
Dagger -
Mace -
Sword -
Polearm -
