So yeah Im sure I am not the only person who feels this way. I do love FFXI, I have been playing it for many years now since 2004 and it has by far been the best mmorpg experience I have ever had. I am sure that FFXIV will also be an awesome rewarding experience.
There are only 2 real reasons why I do not want to play FFXIV even if it becomes an amzing enjoyable experience.
#1 FFXI was very addicting. I am sure FFXIV will be no exception. When I played WoW for a year, I did not find it at all hard to quit. The same goes for Guild wars, However FFXI was one of those games that I got into and never was able to trully quit it even when I needed to because my grades in high school were sliping. Hell Its safe to say that because I was so into FFXI back in high school I did not graduate with honors. Before FFXI My GPA in High school was a 3.6. After Starting FFXI it dropped down to a 2.0. I graduated with that GPA as well. Now that I am in college I am holding a 3.0 GPA I do play FFXI and learned to manage my time much better than I did back in high school. I play FFXI casually but the problem still there, I can't really quit it. So I don't want to be sucked into another FF experience with the same awesome storyline and lore as FFXI.
#2 I have been commited to Aion since 2006. I found out about it since it was first shown in Korea and fell in love with it. I did the Korea open beta, China closed beta, China open beta, and doing the US closed beta right now. I am a huge fan of the game. It is very casual like I want right now, as well as having amazing graphics great music, and an awesome storyline and lore. Since I have commited myself to Aion as being my LAST ever mmorpg game I will keep to that word.
MMORPGs are very enjoyable games, and experiences you can't really have anywhere else. They do take up a lot of time though, the more hard core the mmo the more time it takes to do something, and there comes a time where you wake up and realize you could have done much more with those years, like learning to play an instrument, or a 3rd language. At least thats how it is for me. This is the main reason Aion will be my last mmorpg, and if it turns out to be a really bad grind (Which from beta it does not seem that way) I will also quit it and just play online RPG games like guild wars or Never Winter Ngihts 2.
I am almost sure FFXIV will be a breathtaking experience to match the best mmorpg games out there. Its to bad I really can't / won't be a part of it. I have high hopes for the game and I do have things I want the game to have that FFXI lacked. If only for the sake of all the casual players who are in similar situations to myself that will go on and play FFXIV.

I can sort of relate. I first got into mmo's around 8 years ago when i was 13 and there was a point where i was well and truly addicted. I remember getting up at 5am to play before school. I do regret that now as my social life did suffer.
I don't really play anything at the moment. I have a different attitude toward games now that I have other commitments (work etc). I've realised that there's more important things in life than spending all day in front of a pc monitor.
That being said, I still love a good MMO and I will certainly be playing FFXIV in my spare time (probably a couple of hours most evenings).
I don't think you can justify not playing because you might get addicted. If you want to play then play, just be sensible about it, stick to a few hours in the evenings like myself... although I suppose in some cases it is easier said than done.
I agree, just like with everything else in life you need to learn how to balance. Too much of anything will upset that balance. There is nothing wrong with playing an addicting game, just don't make it your life, if you do that is your own fault.

"Knowing is half the battle! Go Joe!"
you guys are right, but I do know myself, and I know that another FF game would just not be good for me. It would seriously hamper my ability to concentrate on school. I do want to play it don't get me wrong, but I know it would be a mistake at this point.
I need a game that Is not as addicting, something I can feel like quitting at any time. Since a lot of freinds from FFXI would be on FFXIV for me, it would be hard to just quit at any time.
FFXIV will be around a long time i'm sure. One day the time will be right for you to jump in and i'm sure you will play it and we will see you there. Until then take care of real life issues and practice time management haha.
