Been waiting for years for something like this...
Is there anything out there that has the detailed ship management of Eve Online, but is still built around players forming crews on a single ship? One where players still have avatars that board the ship, have gun fights and other adventures on planets, but then also have space battles with ships?
I want it all, an MMO that does old games like Starflight, Privateer, Elite, etc. People can choose to be merchants, privateers, military, pirates, or a little of everything.
I want the crew to man gun pods like in the Millenium Falcon in Star Wars, fight off pirates before they jump to safety, then land on another planet, go the local bar, have a fistfight with some scum, then head out into the wildreness and discover lost alien artifacts, then run back to the ship and take off before the imperial forces put a blockade on the planet.

Nothing even close to that yet.
video games are still evolving. More engines utilizing more quality physics, some newer games such as red faction introduced a new engine where everything is destructable. The industry is new and growing/evolving, and it can only grow as fast as newer and better hardware becomes available and cheaper and when more people come into the business (time is also a major factor). Expect games with more depth coming out 10+ years from now, including games such as the one you mentioned.
Playing: EVE Online
Favorite MMOs: WoW, SWG Pre-cu, Lineage 2, UO, EQ, EVE online
Looking forward to: Archeage, Kingdom Under Fire 2

It does seem odd to me that this has technical hurdles that still need to be resolved. I can understand how the fps component might still be problematic. Ideally ship battles would work like you were playing a game of X-Wing vs Tie, where using a joystick really counts for performance, so that might have to be scrapped for something that is more point and click.
But from my understanding of how servers work, a lot of the activity would be "instances" because of the enormous distances involved. Planets, or sectors of planets would be instances, along with space stations and the like.
I guess it just seems odd that I could play Starflight on my C64, but even now we can't make a multiplayer version of that game.
