Please help me build a budget gaming PC

sunjenkweisunjenkwei Member Posts: 133

I'm making a PC, but the price should be around $700 or $600. Please help me pick out parts that will at least be able to play games within the next few years.

Also, I wish to play other games on it in the near future.

Can anyone tell me what parts I should get or tell me what is ideal because I heard the minimum specs are not enough.

Edit: Here's what the magazine Computer Shopper gave me(Give me your opinion on this.-    REMEMBER THIS WAS PRINTED IN MARCH MOST OF THESE PART PRICES LOWERED. JUST TOO MANY CHANGES TO WRITE DOWN

Specs always rely on the type of game.  MMOs would typically meet minimum specs for video card, but require higher processing power and memory.  When it comes to sub $800 desktops, AMD is uncontested.  Getting both an AMD processor and AMD video card is ideal.  Especially for mmos as they traditionally favor AMD hardware.

I think in mmos we are going to be seeing a shift into 64-bit clients mainly due to the memory demands.  I would aim at getting 3 components and designing your system around it.  A factory overclocked HD4890, an AMD Phenom II 955, and 8 gigs of ram.  If you can I would wait until September/October before building so you can get Windows 7, Istanbul AMD Processor, SATA6, USB3.0, and a DX11 video card.

1 year warranty for pc is a joke, there are 2 parts, that could possibly have 12 months warranty. thats A CHEAP CRAPPY psu ( good psu will have 3-5 years ) , and creative sound card  if ur getting one.. and ur not..

prebuild pcs always cost much more.. and are made of pure fail.. , im not upto speed with todays parts.. so i wont offer my help, but if you buildings yours gaming pc.. its always good to spend few weeks researching before you actually buy.

and no.. you dont need 8 gb.. of ram , 4 is more than enough

I suggust you take some of your own advice sir, research before you flame. I assure you our systems are not made of 'pure fail'...far from it. 1 year warranty is the industry standard. It is the most we can offer while still keeping our profit low (and it is very low).

4GB is plenty in a 32bit gaming environment but once we start seeing 64bit games you will want that 8GBs.

I am not sure why people like to voice thier il formed and informed opinons when the OP is simply looking for sound advice.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

It's a web forum, get used to it. BUT...

I've seen your posts and your website before, and I have to admit that I have a few concerns, not flames. You previde very limited specs for your computers. I build my own personally, but were I to buy a full system, I'd want to know exactly what I was getting. Take for instance:  boensystems.com/magento/index.php/computers/gaming-computers/valkyrie.html

You say 4gb RAM. Great. What kind? 800mhz? 667? What manufacturer? Which model? I could be getting PC333 RAM with horrendous timings there. The HDD is 500 gigs. Also good. What brand? Which model? Is it a 7200 RPM? There's still a few 5400s out there, after all. Also, what mobo? What's the size of the power supply? What, if any options would I have for expansion? Do you include an OS? Which?

I'm not trying to attack you, merely suggesting that you don't provide a lot of information to help a customer make an informed choice. I mean, Dell gives more detailed specs on their units!

I would use ebuyer and check the most popular products and best reviewed ones

You can build a nice machine for that price.  AMD is going to be the cheaper option, but Intel is the peformance option.

I suggest scoring a cheap AMD CPU or the Intel Dual Core (not the core 2 duo).  Just price around and do some benchmark searching in Google.

Motherboard wise... Asus is a good brand, but going to be more expensive.  Gigabyte is a good brand (I own one) and tend to be moderate priced.  You can't go wrong really.. just make sure they have good reviews.

Memory is cheap these days so long as you dont get a MB that requires latest generation memory.

Your video card is going to be the hardest choice.  Don't use the onboard one like the guy earlier said.  Look around for a 8800GT if you can find one for a good price (try amazon) if not, then do some price shopping.  You can probably find a 9600GT or a 9800GT for anywhere around $90-125 USD   OR  if you are wanting to go real cheap EVGA has a few 9500GTs that are real cheap on Newegg.

It all depends on what you want really.  Everyone has personal opinion, but there are a few facts that can't be ignored such as benchmark tests and overall reviews.

Here is one I built for you:

    Intel E7400 & Gigabyte Motherboard Combo $239 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.205132 )

    Cooler Master Centurion 5 Case $44 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119047 )

    Antec 500W Power Supply $74 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371007 )

    Zotac 9600GT /w Free World @ War $99 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500043 )

    G.Skill 4GB DDR2 1066 RAM $49 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231166 )

    Sony CD/DVD Burner SATA $31 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118030 )

And I would go Windows 7.  Luckily, I already had a copy of Windows XP from a previous computer I owned.  Do not go Vista!  You lose a few frames in games (for whatever reason) while using Vista.  XP and Win7 are better choices.  Also, Windows 7 is free at the moment :)
