O'rly then how my friend, how can i play this glorious free game without buying it in some form or fashion.
DDO.com
Really, you should check these things before posting. It's just your standard downloader that installs the game and patches it... Though, I suppose technically you are purchasing the bandwidth, computer, and electricity as well, but that's not game-specific.
I dunno, my highest level character is a level 10 Wiz/Rog Warforged. Since he is warforged I would have to pay to play him. So I probably will just stay not playing.
If I could play my original guy without paying I would seriously consider it. But they are essentially holding my favorite guy hostage. So on principle I will probably just stay away, rather than come back.
i ll play the free content . i would nt pay codemasters anymore money after they charged my paypal account after i cloased my subscription to lord of the rings online .
That is strange. A Paypal subscription is a standing order to make a regular payment, CM do not pull the money from Paypal, Paypal push the money to CM. CM are not in a position to make an error, Paypal however are, as that is where you are actually closing your subscription.
IMO F2P MMO's just don't have the revenue to have the staying power of some of the P2P MMO's being released. Not to mention lack luster customer service.
oh really?
Thats why games like Tabula Rasa is still going strong? Why AoC and Warhammer are such a huge success? Lets not mention Darkfall or Vanguard... P2P games which are on the virge of disapearing forever because of their great P2P schemes.
What nonsense you talk, Free to play on a Tripple A MMO? I think your mistaking it for a korean grind fest mmo, this will bring a lot more players to a game that would otherwise be buried under the mass of new mmo's being released.

DDO's endgame is a grindfest, as players are either grinding the shroud for weapon or grinding Reavers Refuge for armor runes. Since there is no real PvP, besides stupid Tavern brawls, and no player or guild housing, a capped toon twinked to a player's satisfaction really has nothing to do.
Maybe replacing vets with FTP players with no memories of Turbine's deception is the way to go; however, it probably would have been easier for them just not to drive out existing players ...

First of all DDO is not a AAA MMO. DDO was after three years a near failure from a subscription and popularity standpoint, F2P games have a history of making their money by not providing large development teams post release and using the "maintain the game" only approach.
DDO will fail as a F2P if they go that route. DDO needs constant development in the future to make this hybrid payment style work. P2P is not the reason those games you mentioned have or might fail. They failed because they were not worth playing very long in Tabula Rasa or Vanguard for example IMO. I played them both and found them lacking. If they were free to play I would have found them much better, until it came time to spend money.
See F2P only works if there is a revenue stream to make the company money. Some use advertising, some use a cash shop. But make no mistake if there is no profit the game will not continue. DDO was not buried under the mass of anything, it simply never had wide appeal and while changing the payment plan and giving away the download should attract more players it needs to appeal to them beyond the first few days in order to make money and the truth is DDO has failed for three years to do so in any large numbers.
I expect an influx of new players when this goes live, I would guess the new players will outnumber the ones leaving by a large number, but if they do not become VIP members or use the cash shop in large numbers DDO as a F2P will not survive because that is their only income on this game.
I have been playing the beta and will play once it goes live. The reason I stopped playing DDO in the first place was my friends were already playing for WoW and did not want to pay for a 2nd MMO. This has them interested and would allow me to play again with the benifit of having my penny pinching buddies there with me. and if they want to have access to more of the game they can either subscribe or purchase the features thay want in the Store.
I think this could have a possitive effect on MMORPGs. Instead of world dieing off as people jump ship to new games they could still log in and play casually as a suplimant to their new MMO of choice. This keeps the community active and healthy and keep the world populated instead of becoming a ghost town as I have seen happen in game after game.

Turbine or any company making an older game F2P still has costs involved that do not go away because it is F2P. This model has to make them more money or DDO will still end up dead. All the costs of servers and maintenance are still there. Many F2P run on the smallest crew they can and update as little as possible and so they save money, but if DDO is to have any future it needs to offer new adventure packs and content more often then it does right now.
Going F2P does not mean free to produce. Active communities that spend money are what a F2P like DDO is becoming need. Just being F2P is not the answer.
I have read that European DDO will not come F2P. But I'm downloading American DDO trial atm and I have signed in for beta. Do you know will I be able to play it in future as european player or will they block it from us like 2moons did?

They haven't blocked in the past, and the new model doesn't give any reason for them to do so now, so you should be fine.
Personally I think Europe will go F2P given some time as CM are hinting it is a Turbine decision rather than theirs.
Wish I could say yes as I loved pnp d&d but after several tries I could not get enjoyment out of that game. Imo they were trying to charge me for a modified Guild Wars game.

I played both and apart from the instancing I can't see any major similarity, can you be more specific?
I will give it a go. I always thought it was interesting and actually bought it at release but lost my CD key and was never able to play it beyond the beta.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Im glad to see that finally, for once, the community is HAPPY. Man, i gotta tell you, since i signed up for this website i have not read as many positive reviews in one place as i have seen here. This shows that DDOU will be a hit, or at least i expect it will be. Hopefully this will be the highest quality F2P MMO, and if it is you can surely see this game easily turning into an AAA and household MMO name.
The community is happy? You must have selective reading. There are definately people not happy with some changes that are blatanly aimed at the veterans.
DDOU may be a hit, but the truth is DDO never had good player retention and making it F2P is not by itself going to change the fact that DDO simply does not appeal to the masses and as the game is currently set up never will be a mass appeal game.
Turning into a AAA and household name? You must be a fanboy.
As a free game, I would give it a go. I've only ever played the trial and I don't see it as a game I would stick with long term. I'll echo some other's comments that it just wasn't what I expected from a D&D title. it would certainly be nice to have another option to play though, and it would be interesting to see how a former P2P MMO makes the transition.

I played all the time till game cards became hard to find. I have two other games on subcription adding another pay for game would bring the tally to $100 a month I need a free to play one for a change

From what I understand subscribers will get a certain amount of free points each month to use in the store. And on top of that, subscribers, and non-subscribers can currently in the beta earn store points by earning "Favor" I did this in the beta by mearly completeing the starting quest.
So honestly worst case scenerio, use the money you normally pay for the subscription and buy the points needed to unlock the warforge.
In the current beta <NDA is lifted> Warforge, and dark elf are the only races you have to buy with points. And the Monk and Favored Soul are the only classes you have to buy with points. The cost is really not very big as long as the numbers stay the same at release.
Weapons, armors, etc... like someone else said, mainly just small twinking abilities for a starting toon. Nothing major.
Potions of healing, and spell points will most likely be the money makers for the store, as well as ammo, and spell components.
You can also buy hirelings in the store, or from an NPC in game, so you can buy the same hireling with real money, or play money.
Currently there are XP potions in the store, I think they were 20% XP gain for 3 hours, or for 6 hours. Those were probablly the biggest item in the store that would give someone spending real money an edge over a player that chose to spend no money.
There are also cosmetic things, hair dyes type stuff.
I liked this game when I played the beta when it originally was comming out, but I didn't buy it because friends were haunting me about playing something else at the time.
I will be playing now in this free version, atleast until something better comes along, and I will most likely spend real money on points here and there, just because. If I spent $5 or $10 dollars a month here and there on store points, it still saves me money. and I don't have to spend the money to keep playing it.
Yea i will be playing it! The beta is looking real good and all the small things makes the game feel much better now. Anyone know if there will be an unoffical European server or if there are EU guilds on the US servers?
I will have a European guild, but it's for Polish players. Arcane Brotherhood PL - if someone from Poland reads it, send me a message!
Other than that, I think we should open a thread here and chose ONE server for all European players. US time makes it harder to play with US people, so we should, as Europeans, group on one server.
In other words, let's choose one server which will be unofficial European server in DDO US . I'm considering Thelanis or Argonessen, as well as Gallandha.

i will defenelty give it a fair chance and try it
funny hey i would never even have pre-buy and betaed this game
but now with f2p
i can actually see if its for me
i know f2p and p2p cost the same for player in a year but
initial cost is what keeps me from probably a lot of very good p2p title
i guess i got burned too often, now im not very friendly with the idea of parting with 100$ just to try a game
i often dont bother and skip it
last title i buy was war and i havent loged more then 15 hour total play time
so for me p2p was king of expensive for me in my view
Im glad to see that finally, for once, the community is HAPPY.

Nope. I was in the beta and played for a month or two after release. It's not what I want in a D&D MMO. Far from it.
