I hate to say this, but if your enjoying <insert recent model mmo here> stay there. You'll save some time and money that you could spend on something like your girlfriend, or some new shoes.
Aion looks pretty, is stable as it gets for mmo releases. But, you can get both of those things in any other game of the same vein on the market right now. So if your already playing one of those, and you like it.. unless all of your friends are moving to Aion.. stay where you are.
My biggest gripe with the game, is its biggest plus. Its familiar! I already knew how to play before I even installed. I instantly got the "I've done this already" feeling from it. I'm midteens in level now and it hasn't changed. I could reactivate WoW, lotro, VG, EQ2, or AOC and login right now and get the same "fun" out of it.. with more content available to me to boot.
Aion is a good "first" mmo.. but if you've already played all the other ones like it.. wait for FF14.

I wish you had written it 2 weeks ago, before I paid for the pre-purchase at NCSOFT Store ... I agree a bit. I mean, Aion is a good game. The grind has been cut down (comparing to other NCSOFT releases), the graphics are amazing. Fun from creating the character with their creation tool is great... but it's not enough. I don't know, I'm really trying to give that game a chance but there is nothing new AND big enough to make me stay there for longer. The developers were claiming that it's all up to you what you want to do there - PvE, PvP ... but in fact, this games comes to one aim - PvP in the abyss. I hate PvP so that makes me a loser ... ehhh.
Aion is a good game but the only question with Aion will be how long will it take people to get bored because, like many have said, we have done this before. Its a beautiful game, it will be fun but how long will the fun last. I even preorder the CE and was excited about Aion but then I said to myself, " Well it is an ok game but its just another fantasy mmo." So I will be playing Champions Online instead because it is something new and different for me. I'm sure once the newness wears off it will be a matter of time before some start looking elsewhere.
Finally someone who actually makes sense of it all.I would say you are exactly right, except for Aion has flying the other games do not, well most games do not.
I also noticed you used the word "pretty" again correct, many are trying to convey the terms of great graphics, there is a big difference.
You said "if" a first game ,again i would say a good analogy,if AION is the first game you have ever played and you are into PVP,then go for it,otherwise sit and wait for something that is actually unique and full of content.
I would also say you have a good chance of expecting FFXIV to be a great content game, but it is never a guarantee,we will have to wait and see.
I would say that without even seeing a glimpse of FFXIV it will at the very least be a tad better game than AION,because i am positive it will have more classes, more things to do outside of PVP,the rest is still up in the air.
Too bad "beta" is actually suppose to be a means to help a developer improve or convey problems. What has really become of "betas" is a chance to try out a game and nothing more.
I would not stick to waiting for just FFXIV,you never know, every so often a developer breaks out with something amazing.
Unrealtournament and quake were amazing new games for their time.Everquest love it or hate it was amazing for its time,Half Life was amazing for its time.Sim City started a whole new trend of sim games that have sold millions of copies.EA sports started an amazing string of great looking and playing sports games. So sooner or later more great games and developers will pop out.I am sure many are watching somewhat the Schilling MMO ..Copernicus and there is a few others.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
To the first poster you said you got to the mid teens, this is not a great place to really judge the game. I played the chinese retail of Aion for a while and the game does not take off until you begin to hit the Abyss and have areas with Rifts. The game is a PvPve game with its major draw being the pvp.
The early stuff is your standard fair, point and click, theme park game. It is done very imo but as you said, you feel like you have played this countless time. It all changes and the game grows up so to speak once you get into your 20s and continues to do so from there. The early stuff is your baby time and getting your feet wet
Second poster, I am sorry you preorderd without doing your homework. It is common knowlege that Aion is heavily based in pvp play and even the pve involves pvp.
Heh, I also am leaning towards Champions. I really enjoyed Aion and I think it will do well and many will enjoy it. I am just really tired of all the similar MMOs and look forward greatly to titles like SWToR, APB, Global Agenda, Champions, Mortal, games that are offering something more fresh to dive into that is not point and click, fantasy, theme park. Though I do not disssuade anyone from playing Aion it is a great MMO for the type of game it is and I may still pick it up for soem Abyss action ^^
I have a lvl 50 Sorcerer on korean servers. Let me tell you the part you are testing in this beta is the shitty part of the game. No pvp, no ganks...no dungeons. Quests are easy and you have a few skills
Plus, this is the shitty 1.0 version...nuff said
I'm tired of all these "beta reviews" threads. Play the actual game before you post!
Well, I like Aion so far.

I think what happening is that Aion is actally getting released when players are finally hitting 'burn out' - The game is ok but it's the case of 'can I be bothered to sub to another game I've played X times in some form before?'
The Abyss is the core of the game but anyone whos played L2, AoC or WAR even WoW by now wont see it as a 'WOW!' factor moreso if you played the ones that basically broke any sence of pvp by making it more about the 'grind to item' then about guild/faction pride.
If Aion can bring back that sence of 'pride' the game is bound to get the pvp refugees from other games but as it stands atm there nothing that unique about the Abyss other then the fact you can get ganked in pvp by npcs as well ( kinda fixing the 'one faction zerg' issue certain games have).
Aion will probly pick up within a ear but as it stands now it's just player's burn out thats making the game 'meh'.
Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!
No money loss here. I was able to switch over my down payment from Aion to Champions without a problem.
This game is based around socialization, lots of grouping, lots of guild content, if you're looking for the best solo experience (like most of the beta reviewers seem to be doing), Aion might not be your game.
games in any form should be fun from the minute you click "login" on the screen. I've been playing FF7 again on ps1 and I can't say that there isn't anything about that game that hasn't been fun from level 1 to now at the final boss. Was some of it hard and frustrating? Yes.. but it was fun.
Thats why, its ok to make opinions on games with only just having played a few levels. I look at it like a "song". If the song doesn't catch me in the first minute or so.. I'm skipping it. I'm the same way with mmos and games. If it isn't fun from the beginning whats going to make me think it will be any different later?
Aion is a good game. Noone is disputing that. It runs well, and it looks very good. But, the problem is.. we've already got those things in other games. I'm not asking for complete innovation.. just something that makes this game different, all the way through. There are alot of things they could have done to achieve this. They just didn't. WoW didn't evolve the mmo market, they just took what was there and improved it. WoW is a different game than EQ.. If you logged into each game, you'd be seeing a fairly different version of gameplay on each. WoW took the things that made EQ such a great game and expanded them.
For example.. of some of the things Aion could have done..
- player housing (its been done, but there are OTHER ways to do it that would make it unique to Aion)
- criminal system (its been done, but again there are a bunch of ways to make it its own)
- Player driven content (Quest created by the players, or other added "fluff" to give people a reason to play.. the possibilities here are endless. WoW has tons of fluff, and FFXI has tons of gameplay related "fluff".)
- PVE divisions (In WoW its quests, instances, and raiding. In FFXI there are so many different "types" of PVE I can't even list them all. The end goal is the same on them all, but they put a new spin on it each time so it makes the player feel like they are doing something new.)
The Journey is missing from Aion. 1-cap is just a means to and end and most people are just going to try to get to that point as fast as they can to avoid the boring gameplay up to that point. It shouldn't be that way. The game should have something to offer at all levels, at all times. MMO's used to be about excitement and adventure, and exploring the unknown with strangers and people you know. Making new friends, and enemies. Now, its just become a machine and it doesn't feel much like the immersive fantasy worlds I grew up loving and getting addicted to.
I don't get that "feeling" anymore.

I get that fun feeling with aion, not to the degree of hillarious funniness that is Overlord 2, but fun
That's not exactly true. If it were then I would already be playing any one of those games and wouldn't feel the need to play another.
I'm playing Aion specifciall because of what it offers and how it offers it. I don't play wow and I no longer play L2 as I don't like where they took it.
It has the right balance of the right ingredients. Because of this, I look forward to making it my main game.

I'm not trying to deter anyone from playing Aion... for you it may be just what your looking for. But for me personally, its just not.
actually, I might just take a break from mmo's all together. I've got console games to play, and music to write and a band to play in.

I agree entirely with Hong Kong. The game become more robust, compelling and innovative at level 25+. The point he makes about it being version 1.0 for beta is exactly right.

With that name and incon, PLEASE tell me you got Ghostbusters on the PS3 or Xbox 360. If not, go get it right now. I am in love with that game so much my wife is jealous!
You know, this reminds me of that time you tried to drill a hole through your skull...
that would have worked if you hadn't stopped me

I got the game the day it released as soon as my gamestop opened. I had it preordered for months. I got the free t-shirt and GB2 suit. I almost crapped myself when dan akyroyd called my phone.
HUGE ghostbusters fan. And, its the funnest game ever. I haven't beaten it yet because I am trying to cherish the greatness of it. Currently on the stage after the library. Stay Puft was epic. I love how that game is extremely fun, and it doesn't steal my soul with time commitments.

Yep. Figured that out after the second beta weekend.
I'm also thankful that only one person in our guild has decided to leave for Aion. He was kind of the ugly stepchild of the guild anyway.

Same here. I had that phone call and I even have it saved to my voice mail STILL. And I got 2 t-shirts.....well, one for the wife but she was like "I am not wearing THAT"...so more for me.
It is an awesome game and I am loving it....one of the few console games I can plan on playing through more than once.
I am also on the library and loved the Stay Puft fight.
Okay sorry Aion people....didn't mean to take over your thread but we had to have a little Ghostbusters fan-gasm there.
Bring on Ghostbusters 3 please.......
lol. Yeah.. I'm also part of a local charity ghostbusters chapter. we have flight suits and prop built proton packs and stuff, and we actually do some real life paranormal investigations on occassion. People get a kick out of it when we show up for those dressed as the fab 4.

Agreed. Atm CO is my fav of the things coming. It IS fresh in some really nice aspects. (If only the damn NDA ended, heh.) But Aion... I have not seen anything that really catches me. Why fly a minute when I can fly endless in CO? (No NDA break, thats known...) And sure, you have nice chars and a nice world. But that novelty factor isnt right to be seen.
Still, when my first excitement with CO is done, I am sure to try Aion out, but certainly not right away when it launches. Nothing there that really calls me like "wow THIS is new and cool".
