South America exclusion!!

Hi to you all!! My first topic is a complain about the exclusion that occur to the South America. The currently MMOPRGs have been excluding the South American players. I am from Brazil and here we don´t have the money that they ask us to pay. I think they have to turn their eyes to the players here. South America have a huge number of players and they surely would gain a lot of money by turning the games more accessible to the players here. I know that this topic won´t change this situation, but i wanted to be heard.

Don't want to sound like a dick or anything, but I don't think big companies like SOE thinks there is money to be made in third world countries.

I however agree with you, everybody should have the right to game =p

You just answered your own question why they don't offer it there.

  • Pato,

There have been two MMORPGs talked about that not only have South American players, but were made by South American countries.

Next, do like the Koreans, Scandinavians, Europeans, and Japanese did. Asia was ignored by North American MMORPG companies, so was Europe. They then made their OWN mmorpgs!

    I have a Brazilian friend.

*Bad ping on UT2k4 servers. ::::39::

*What you would spend here in America on PC parts, you can spent up to three times as much in Brazil

*There are almost no electronic stores that sell PC parts. No large chains like Best Buy or Ultimate Electronics reside there.

*No one will sell to you on ebay or half.com

*Did I mention that ping down there is a bitch?

Reasons like these are why SONY does not want to lose profit by making SA servers, making Portuguese copies, and spending money shipping to the very few stores that would sell the products.

Most US MMORPG's come to Europe :-/ So far I haven't seen one US popular US MMO that hasn't come out here yet. A wee bit later for some because the French and Germans want it translated, but it comes out all the same.

Even Europe was behind the 8-ball for a while with online gaming.  Most European countries did not have flat-rate phone bills - they paid for phone time by the minute, therefore, couldn't afford to spend a lot of time online, especially the lengths of time required by games like EQ.  I'm guessing that most European countries now have flat-rate.

Coupled with the fact that most online services were pay-per-hour (after the time included with your subscription) until the end of 1994 and into 1995, Europeans were hit with a double-whammy.  I remember when a lot of people had 2-4 online accounts (AOL, Prodigy, etc.) because it was cheaper to use the monthly time on each than pay by the hour on one.

South America will continue to lag behind in online access and gaming simply because the infrastructure is not there yet and what little is there is unreliable.

    S. Americans will have to turn to Asian MMOs for right now. Asian developers keep in mind that their players don't have the latest equipment, nor the best infrastructure. Unfortunately, because your infrastructure is a couple years behind, you are stuck with games a couple years behind. It may not be fair, but it's life.

Now go watch Vanderlei Silva image beat someone up, and be happy he's representing Brazil so well!

Pato i suggest you check out www.odysseyclassic.com  we have quite a few brazilian players and its free.  Its not the most graphically enhanced game or anything, but it has great gameplay and is quite addicting.

I know a guy who has DSL in a crountry side town in south of Brazil. Honestly, there is no Movie Theater in this town but there is DSL.

There is a little bit of exageration on this thread, all big cities in Brazil (there are many big cities in Brazil) have DSL and cable internet connections. Compurer parts even being more expensive mostly due to the currency change, are still easily obtainable anywhere.

But I think its more about the amount of people that can afford $15 a month which corresponds to ~R$40 (real) which is actually a $40 value (you can do as much with this amount).

So fewer people can afford the $15 a month ($40 value in Brazil), those who do probably have broadband already and can more or less connect to US servers (I know some do). People from Sao Paulo certaily can do it since There are direct lines to US.

So lets say SOE will have a South American server, they want to have the same profit and prob will have to use about the same technology. Since the most expensive thing is to maintain the servers, and it is a lot cheaper to hire people in Brazil (compatible with currency value), they could very well charge less for the monthly fee. They wont lose money this way but they wont be making the same kind of profit either.

    just my 2cp

The only company that is excluding south-americans is blizzard, with their stupid regional servers policy, that only considers a hand-ful of countries anyway(us,europe,china,korea)....

i know for a fact a lot of south-americans are playing eq and Swg, with no problem(and they speak english with no problem), so i dont see the big deal.

when he said that he dont have the money, probably he was talking about the resctriction of ordering the game online also...because amazon doesnt send games to some countries, only books cds and such....so you have to use special courier services to order the games and thats an additional price.

yea by the way amazon shame on you also...image

Well I'm from Brasil and I'd like to point a few things that were said here

Here, we don't have problems with language - most of the online gamers can speak english well
And he do wave ADSL, Cablem, etc. - also, we have many eletronics stores
obviously some towns doesnt, but big cities like Rio de Janeiro, Coritiba and S

What can I say here, I love SA and been to brazil a few times myself. However getting a trustworthy partner there might be hard, it isnt exactly the easiest place to start a business in brazil with all the corruption and bribes you have to deal with.

Now that being said, the minimum wage there is just above 300 reals... which is about 100$ per month, sadly a lot of ppl get that wage. Paying 40 reals for a computer game per month would be pretty step for most ppl there.

However there live like 200 million ppl just in brazil, I would like to know how many of those could actually afford to play the game.

Still I'm very interested with this subject, since I agree that this market might be overlooked in some sense.
