I have no problem submitting credit card information to participate in a beta. Their FAQ says:
Will my credit card be charged anything? No. A hold of $0.10 US will be temporarily placed on the account during the verification of process. The hold is removed shortly thereafter and nothing is charged to the account.
I've used my credit card to participate in free trials before and cancelled before they charged my card and haven't ever had any problems. This is simply not an issue for me. I suppose it all comes down to how much you trust the publishers of MxO.

I normally wouldnt have a problem giving my cc for verification purposes, but seeing that its beta and testing the system, it seems that its more of guinea pig approach. Here lets put this in and see what happens.
I sure in the hell don't want to test their "billing system", nor do I want small charges for free thing. If we are testing the billing system- they obusivously think something is wrong with the system. Again- no other mmorpg company feels the need to do this and MxO will suffer for it.
I think this is a new low. Soon, these companies will expect you to pay for beta. I won't be supporting this move and won't even bother looking at Matrix Online.

Haven't read through sorry but they aren't charging you for anything and you have to put in your credit card for a MMOG even if you're on a free month, maybe there's little point for them to do it in a beta but I don't see the big deal...
Originally posted by Hyoukan First off, some betas require a CC to make sure someone doesn't make more than one account, this is totally understandable, so year even if they need me to use a CC I would. Although this is a closed beta so there's really no reason for them to be asking for a CC other then to confirm who you are.

It's so only people over the age of 18 can play MMORPGs.
The person who started this thread is either:
- A minor and complaining he will never be able to play The Matrix Online
- An adult with no credit card. What you waiting for to get one?
- An adult with no credit card cause he's in debt. Well, guess what, you should be paying off your debts first before spending more money on video games.
- Someone that does not trust using their credit card online. This is understandable, some people have internet phobia where anything you write is monitored and someone is reading your every move. Just stop being paranoid. Besides, if millions of people have entered their or their parent's credit card numbers in a huge company for a MMORPG and never complained that their CC was stolen, don't you think it's safe? You did know it's actually safer using your CC over the internet since no human beings ever come in contact with your CC number, it's all computerized now. While it's actually more dangerous using your CC in a store, restaurant or anywhere where your CC number is handled by a human. They can just write down your CC# or keep your receipt with all your information and steal money from you.
yes because people that dont have credit cards are inferior and they should be shot. And people with credit cards are great persons that should be admired for such a great acomplishment.
And you know the only way of paying a mmorpg is with credit cards, people that pay for game cards use monopoly money or canadien coins so its no good.
And if you are a kid dont botter posting here, mmorpgs are for adults, SOE said it once so we all must follow that simple rule. Kids curse and use filthty language and adults do it less. We must fight for a kidless enviroment in mmorpgs or otherwise we cant have fun.

And you must be reduced to a nuclear pile of ash lol. Cedit Cards are Risky, cause the IRS will have your head if you fail to pay them, and you can have it stolen and then be screwed (Though thats my opinion)
Anyway, I voted No, why would they ask for a CC for a BETA? Maybe for the Full Game, but never for a BETA.
I am repair man man man man man!!!
I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.
Look, here is the deal. Wanting a credit card # better be explicitly explained/validated by the company. I want to know straight from the horses mouth what their "reasons" are. I want to know why they came to the conclusion that access to thousands of dollars I am responsible for is what is needed to confirm I am 18.
My first thought is this:
They are adopting the "free limited trial" strategy. You get x days (let's say 14) to play for free. Becayse they have that credit card no. in-system, they are just WAITING to push the red button (sorry, bad joke) and run it for the initial charge-even prior to release. They want to lock you in via a cleverly worded contract.
The agreement better explicitly state what happens to that number at the end of this "beta". I've seen "free" trials on the web that state that after 14 days, your CC is charged for a YEAR subscription at $199.99. If MXO wants to be on the up-and-up, they should have, as a choice, the ability to select a box that states that you are a willing beta participant and that the CC# submitted will NOT be charged for any reason during the trial.
PERIOD.
The pressure of having to cancel OR ELSE be charged when many of us have far MORE important daily responsibilities to attend to is just ludicrous. I don't have time to play games with the Merovingian or Train Man in real life, sorry.
To me this smells of a Company looking to make a fast buck off of a HUGE pre-launch (500 here...500 there..."500" everywhere but, hey, who is counting?!) that is called a beta, in hopes of reaping as much profit as possible prior to negative reviews coming out on a product that is subpar in a competetive market. I'm not actually saying this is the case, but it certainly is suspicious.
This is a HORRIBLE first impression for something (closed beta) that is suppossed to make you feel excited, priveleged, and special for having been selected.
If I get selected, I will be reading through the content VERY carefully to see what kind of "requirements" there are. Then I will make my decision. Especially if this is a sign of money-scheming trends that may be coming down the pike.
A word from the developers would be nice.
Permadeath and environmental challenges are the next great step in the evolution of MMORPGs. Only through true adversity will one feel accomplished. Only in truly knowing you can die will true adversity present itself.
heres a question, how good is the matrix online anyway??
if its a piece of crap, whats all the fuzz about?.
Really, now that we have wow and eq2, who cares about matrix online...it could be good or not, nobody knows, but if they plan on appealing to the lowest common denominator instead of the bigger, i dont think they are gonna do so well...

The only thing i know is, they sure as hell better not Charge, when this Beta is Over
I highly doubt they will charge you automatically at the end of beta. Why?
This is beta, not a free trial. Free trials are generally done for old games, where the cost of the game is $10-20. This is going to be a new $50 game. Most people aren't going to be happy about accidentally being charged 50$ because they didn't know they had to 'cancel' before the game went live. Its more trouble than its worth and I don't doubt the publisher knows it.
When people do free trials, they KNOW they are entering into a subscription plan because its plainly stated. If the publisher was really going to do this ludicrious thing, they would have to put it bold print everywhere otherwise they'd probably have angry customers and problems up the ying-yang. Since I haven't seen any such writing, I doubt the publisher would risk this tactic with some hidden clause somewhere.
No, most likely you are going to have to order the game MANUALLY if you want to play in retail.
And why are they asking for a credit card? Verification, I suppose. Most beta testers use beta to play the game for free rather than doing any testing. Asking for a credit card weeds out the majority of people who are not capable of buying this game, and consequently it gives the game focus from people who are potential customers. Now a few legitimate customers get caught on the way side, but I have no doubts that 90% of the gamers use credit cards to pay for MMOs. So essentially this fine tuning is most likely good for the company and the game's beta test.

The purpose of the credit card info is to make the NDA enforceable. They want positive proof that you are who you say you are. Is it so hard to understand?
Excellent?, well i ask because ive heard from a lot of different people that is a piece of &%/#, reading from a lot of different forums, not just here(but it wouldnt hurt going to the MXO complains sections)...not that i mind anyway. And whats the big deal with ENFORCING THE NDA anyway?? blizz all it ask from players was to... play??. And what do you know the game turn out great!. Maybe is not the NDA or the beta testers what makes games great? i think so...

I got into the beta a few weeks ago. 3 days I left. I found nothing about MxO amazing, astonishing, or otherwise cutting edge in a massive market other then it's based on some decent movies.
As far as the CC thing goes, when MxO goes live there better be no way my card gets charged or they are gonna have a class action lawsuit on their hands. Their NDA and EULA state nothing about being charged after it's all over.
1. The 10 cent holding charge is on there temporarily and removed soon thereafter to make sure your not entering fake numbers.
2. You all seem to be looking over the potential customers. You see, this is a closed beta. If it were open or some kind of stress test then naturally a CC shouldnt be needed. But in this case its understandable because they want people that care enough about the game (enough to consider paying for it at release) to actually join the beta, not someone looking for a free MMORPG to play until something better comes out. It seems to me they've effectively removed most of the people looking for a free ride, and those people are the ones complaining...
