I tried to come back to the first MMO that ever got me hooked on the genre, Anarchy Online.
Well I resubbed, downloaded, installed, loggen in and then 10 minutes later un-subbed & uninstallled.
The graphics I can handle, not much of a problem. But the lag was horrendus. I don't get how people can still play this. And it's server lag, nothing I can do about it.
On top of it, I asked whether they added an auction house or mail system. People responded "LOL this aint WoW". Yeah cause only WoW has a good market/AH and mail system. It's amazing that something practical gets bashed by the AO community.
AO is a great game but I cannot get back into it. It needs an overhaul & real support. Funcom needs to wake up and release an Anarchy Online 2.

Yeah the whole "this ain't wow" thing would be very annoying to me... people are so desperate to be different WoW they'll take whatever they can get even if it's something bad. I don't think I'd play an MMO without an AH.. I played Guild Wars and it was a disaster trying to sell stuff or buy stuff by just using a trade channel that was constantly getting spammed.
There is an auction house, what purpose is there for a mail system.
I 100% Agree! AO was my first MMO ever and imo still has the most imagination of any mmo to date. I tried coming back and played for about 2 months last year sometime. The graphics did rub me the wrong way, but not to the point I just had to quit. The most frustrating is the outdateness of the leveling. Sure getting into a group and just doing QL200+ missions or grinding on Hecklers was fun, but after playing your more modern MMOs where you can solo quest to max, the game just seemed dull in that sense.
I still love the class design. I mean it's your typical tank/caster/healer/pet class game, but the way AO had it, it just felt very original even still.
To be honest I much rather seen an AO2 then and AoC or even TSW they are working on now. ALthough I do enjoy the crap out of AoC and so far TSW sounds very interesting, nothing best the good ol setting of Rubi-Ka, Shadow Lands, and the endless conflict of Omni vs Clan.
Hopefully one day Funcom will return to the MMO that I fell in love with.

its sad to say but, apart from me experiencing no lag, the ao community is pretty rotten lately. these 10 year olds only care for drama, its pretty depressing to read the official forums for rimor (rk2) with all its personal fights only cause of a simple game. then theres also the ppl who defend their most played profession, they think they have the right/knowledge to tell anyone not agreeing with them that they are nubs and should gtfo 'their' forums (the prof forums). and the most sad part is the devs actually listen to those who bitch enough, i dont know what they are thinking when they say they want to get rid of Aimed Shot and power up pistols yet they introduce an Aimed Shot pistol ....

Some players may think a mail system to be "WoWish" and thus bad, but that doesn't mean the developers agree with that viewpoint.
Other than that I think AO has some of the more displeasant forums I have encountered, but definetely not the worst. The forums are also not representative of the game, all in all I've found the AO community to be kind and helpful for the most part. Lowlevels is unfortunately another story because the rotten apples can get away with a lot because of being anonymous, which makes them more vocal/abusive.

There are player stores which require you to travel to clan cities. Damn annoying.
Mail system to send money & items to your alts instead of constantly asking for transfers from other players.

imo the forums are fairly representative of the community since the ao forums are THE place for news/updates for the game, not the homepage or any fansite.. everyone goes and talks on the official forums. ofc the community ingame is better, but it was way better a few years ago when i first started. I guess there werent any ppl back then who played the game so long they ended up being bitter ao junkies

you dont have to ask other players since the game is free now you can create an alternate account and set up a middle man to transfer credits and items. it gives you the coordinates of the location of the items you buy im sure.
Well youve obviously been playing too much WoW. AO is still a very good game, and it is great because it dosent hand everything to you on a stick like most newage mmos. And the player shop/GMS is brilliant and makes more sense then an auction house.
What lag? If its a server lag how comes I dont have any?
Yes, there are spikes sometimes, but nothing that much or often that would spoil my play. I did sec42 recently and if my game could run smoothly there - I say its your PC, sorry.
How long ago did you play if you dont know about GMS? And how comes you dont know that you can make free account for transfers, no need to bug anyone? No, its not a perfect system but its working.
If you just popped in game and asked where is your AH, I dont wonder players responded with "this is not WoW". I dont justify them but I understand. There are too many WoW kiddies demanding instant gratifications that came to AO lately..... you cant be surprised if people get fits at single mention of WoW feature.
AO does have good market, the fact that you didnt take any time to check on it but started to demand AH reeks too much of spoiled WoW player IMO.
The one thing AO doesnt have is spoonfeeding and catering "me wants NOW" kind of players - and I hope it will never have.
Edit: deleted. someone beat me to it.
I just joined again yesterday but so far people have been perfectly pleasant to me and I haven't noticed any new problems. The game runs nicely on my 2-3 year old 8800. OP have you tried going to your card options and turning on all the bells & whistles AO leaves out of its own option screens? I have found this actually makes things better for me.
I did notice my AV flipping out while the patcher was going. Can't imagine how that would translate into poor game performance once patched but who knows.

AO is very cpu intensive, your graphics card doesnt really matter. also when u play it in vista u can experience VERY bad performance, i had it too. but apparently not all vista users have that. im back on xp anyway till windows 7 comes out

Hey kid, I was a big AO player back in 2003-2005 as a PAYING player, before the froob invasion. I played more AO than WoW, you don't know what ur talking about and probably upset because you cannot afford the latter. I'm actually playing Eve Online now.
Auction House in any random MMO is better than the player city shop options. Let's see, to buy something you need and collect it in an AH system takes less than a minute. To do the same in AO takes 10 minutes. To send some items to ur alt in any random MMO with a mail system takes less than a minute. To do so in AO takes 5-10 minutes, or maybe a few if you run two clients and have a froob transfer toon.
Sorry, but AO is not even the game it used to be before that retarded Shadowlands expansion and WoW coming onto the scene. It is still a great game with great depth, cool class design and a unique tradeskill system but it lags behind the rest. The server lag is what really killed it for me as well as the obvious lack of players.
Funcom needs to overhaul this game and preferably build Anachy Online 2 where everyone starts from level 0.

I have a core 2 duo 3.1 Ghz, I can run 2-3 clients of WoW, Warhammer, Aion or Eve Online. Im pretty sure it's not my CPU.
The game has severe server lag, everyone in the game knows it. It used to run smoother on a weaker computer in Omni trade being packed to the hilts. It's obviously on Funcom's side.

Of course you should.
It's just like every game - some people will love it and others won't. It all depends on what you are looking for in an MMO. It won't cost you anything to try it out.
For me, its still the most in depth customization for characters I have found. You can tweak so much stuff to match your playstyle. Just don't expect awesome graphics. The game is ancient.
There is tons of content - the world is huge, even for froob(free) players, and it's soloable to max level if you are into that sort of torture or solitude.
I haven't been able to play recently due to real life issues, but the community is more or less the same (if not slightly more mature minus the few jerks that are found in every game). You get out of it what you put in. If you ask a polite, intelligent question, you will get a helpful answer.

I have 2 quad and I can run 3 AO clients as well. There was a problem with ocassional lag spikes a while ago but its much less noticeable now. So its obviously NOT Funcom. None in my org suffers from such lag as you describe either and its big active org.
What is obvious to me is that you dont want to play AO for whatever reason. Thats fine. Play WoW. AO is not for everyone anyway.
Just stop bashing on it just because someone told you "lol this is not WoW". Honestly, its not. Go back to WoW.
Oh and just to add - I have been playing AO since SL as a PAYING player too, and I even have 3 PAID accounts with horrendous amount of Veteran Points.
I am not a kid either, old enough to be a Grandma. And I say you played too much WoW as well....
If they made an AO2 with the same skill building system, ip system, where you actually had to think and make choices about where to spend your ip I would be on board so fast. That is the thing I find missing from most mmos now, very limited choices for making your toon unique, not looks but stats/build of your toon. I do think an AH/mailing system should be made was super annoying to be a low level guy without a yalm to get to a shop in some places.
Thinking about AO brings back a lot of memories :P
I'm with ya, AO will always was and always will be my favorite and most treasured MMORPG right alongside my favorite MMOFPS Planetside. The skill and class system in that game is flawless and if they could figure out how to remarket the game and get that stupid new DX9 engine out to relaunch the game, that game would be a massive competitior, it is still the only true Sci-Fi MMORPG in my book.

Actually, since the new database that came with the last patch, lag is minimal to non-existant now. I can run through Bor on full graphics options with a crapload of players in it and barely get a hiccup, f even that. However, I think you came back at a rather bad point in the game.
First, there was an idiot who decided to play around with the script in his org bot and ended up hammering the database to the point where not only RK1 and RK2 suffered a great amount of lag, but RK3 ( apparently where the idiot was ) was actually crashed completely.
Secondly, they just had the AO 8th anniversary where they gave out XP stims for a limited time. The problem was you could only get the stims from the NPC once per toon ( the stims were not nodrop, so they could be traded though ). So for about a week you had hundreds of people rerolling/deleting/rerolling thousands of toons to stock up on xp stims, whch added a boatload of lag due to constant database accessing, especially if you were going though Borealis.
I started playing AO way back in 2001 and even though i dont play as much anymore RL is an issue for older adults now i still think AO is a solid mmo even if it's bloody 8 years old .
Dont listen to those playing other games try it for yourself and discover the best old school mmo experience .
Yes am a fan of the game and yes i have tried alot of others games and i can live without having a freakin mailbox in every mmo i play ....
Cheers

well aren't you a holier then thou vet. I also experienced severe lag in this game when i tried to go back to it, and i played BEFORE SL when there were no expansions and the lag wasn't like this. I, myself had 3 paid accts. I used to love this game when it first came out, so much in fact that i was an ARK for a couple years and the game was never as laggy as it is now, (i got a free acct from thart also so i had 4 at that point) I personally think that it is due to poor coding in the expansions, has to be the only explanation seeing as i can run better games then this on max settings.
They should really work on an AO2 seeing as they scrapped the graphics engine for the "upgrade" and let this game die. Guaranteed if they executed it right, the playerbase would be huge.
