Yeah, but in the end I have to ask "why". I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination. I have pictures of naked women on my computer, erotic movies in my collection and I don't hide the fact from friends if they ask. My movies are not in a box under the bed but are in the racks with all my other movies. And I have to still say "why". If a game is going to have nudity then there really needs to be a reason. Otherwise it seems that it's just there so people can "tee hee" and point and giggle. I think part of being mature is knowing that it doesn't have to be everywhere all the time. It's ok not to have nudity if it does nothing for the story or for the presentation. It just seems like it's here "just to do it and to get press for it". If a game is going to have nudity then there better be a reason. If players want to simulate sex in the privacy of their own copse of trees or castle or space shuttle that's fine with me if that is the type of game they are making. but just to throw it in? meh, seems like a bit of effort for nothing of substance.

Role play and realism are the biggest reason i can think of.
I also think that even if you get jerks that run around naked just for the lulz it will in the end add to the game. You will have player actively dealing with it, forming up to kill him, post on the forums black listing his name or what ever. This should help to develop player interaction.
I could care less about the nudity itself rather than what the asshats do with the nudity. Sure it's realistic, what is done with it will be unrealistic. As far as Im concerned, i could keep my porn and games seperate.
i don't understand why people would care one way or the other. this was the first i've heard about it, and all i thought was, i'm suprised no one hadn't done this before. as for everyone worried about being harrassed, i'm sorry, did i miss the mmo where you had no nudity, and no one harrassed anyone? any mmo with pvp will have a huge amount of dumbasses who's only thrill in life is getting a rise out of tormenting someone else..... hell... even in most pve mmos, you can't escape that. it doesn't matter to me wether the dumbass has a polygon penis or forced tighty whities, it's still just a dumbass being themself.
So what other reasons are there to be nude in a game?
You are a idiot sir, is only for the lore, if u loot someone u loot everything, underwear too. Nothing more, there isn't an option to have sex in this game and never there will be.
It's called realism, but u are so retard that u can never realize it.
As devs stated they never change it only for please a minority of people like u, so don't play if u are so disturbed ok? We never miss you. Cya.
HAHA. He is an idiot because he don't see a point in looting someones UNDERWEAR? HAHAH
Also you call him a retard but you claim it is realistic to be able to loot someones underwear but not have sex? OMFG!
And majority of MO gamers want to have full frontal nudity in the game? For some reason I strongly doubt that.
I really hope these kind of people are not the "majority" of MO gamers. If so then this game will be doomed, no matter how good it is.

It can help set the tone / mood of the game. Like books, would The Song of Ice and Fire be the same without the descriptions of rape and nudity? No it definately wouldn't be, it would feel more childish, nicer, in a way. When the story they tell is not nice, it's not a story about some cuddly teddybear or some cutey elf lord with long blond hair and his bearded little dwarf friend.
Do you know how many 'children' over the age of 30 are playing WoW at the moment?
Lets face facts here, Generation X on are very childish generations (and a lot of the Baby Boomers too). The 1980's created a "me society" that generally turned us all into a bunch of old children.
You've read Coupland. At least a little of Coupland anyway. I guess you missed Microserfs and Life After God where his characters actually evolved into reponsibility.
Look at the divorce rate, the crap we buy, and how we live our lives. REAL adults make sacrifices, what we have now is a bunch of children who divorce because they don't feel puppy love any more, buy new espensive crap on credit every year and "save" in a 401K that fluctuates with the market, and whine incessently while living a totally passive lifestyle.
I don't know what the divorce rate has to do with a passive society. The divorce rate has been a source of spectacle since 1970's. This is a boomer thing, and not exclusively an X phenom. If you look at the statistics, the generation following X (X being 60-70, perhaps 75), you see a major belief swing towards the right. Bush single handedly destroyed this swing.
I look at my parents and I am sickened by my cohorts. My father and mother both worked jobs they hated their entire lives, stayed together through a loveless marriage, and actually saved money because they have a sense of responsibility and sacrifice (By the way, they had 4 kids too).
I am leaving your father and mother out of this, they're somewhat like mine. My father was the liberal reverand (seriously, MA in Divinity), and my mother was the fire and brimstone. Opposite specrums, similar goal. The divorce rate amoungst my X counterparts is 1, me, and we do not have children. Those that do, are all still together. If I had children, I would sacrifice, but I don't, so this is strangly counter productive when addressing gamers. What does it have to do with nudity anyways?
How many 30 year-olds do you know who are truly responsible?
All of them.
My father and mother are now both retired and even if they did not have pensions, they would be fine because you know why? Instead of buying a new iPod, iPhone, large screen TV, or whatever crap made in China they try to force us into consuming, they made due with what they had. They saved their money, not in get rich quick schemes in the stock market, but in T-Bills, bonds, and savings accounts. (So when the dot.com bubble crashed, they stilll had their savings. When the credit market crashed, they still have their savings.) Responsibility and more importantly SACRIFICE are two values that no longer exist in our society.
Sacrifice what? Since when has passing by a "ipod, iphone, large screen TV or whatever crap they made in China" a sacrifice? At 30, these things start to take on a lot less meaning than when you were 20, and at 20, most of your "cohorts" don't give a damn because they are in the same situation. It seems to me you are addressing a non-existing culture. My "X" friends with families still live in the same houses they puchased before the bust. They still take care of their families on budget ranging from a UPS delivery job, Arist, Education, practicing Law, and even Psychiatry. They (we) are pushing 32-40. Responsible? We have been responsible.
So to answer your question, I know a lot of mental children over the age of 30.
I know you have an accusation. Nice job. Coupland painted a canvas, he still does, and he remains one of my favorite writers, but to equate this to a game is rediculous. There are many things out there on the net that equate to 5x worse than animated pixels, and it has nothing to do with generation gaps.
(Sorry to take it off track a bit)
As to the thread, I support full frontal nudity in video games. Why is mass murder more acceptable than a little cock n balls? (I never said I was not childlike like the rest of my generation, just some self-criticism)
Not self criticism, more like blind accusations.
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Actually, there are quite a number of factors involved here. I direct your attention to John Lotts excellent book "More guns less crime." It looks at the reality of violence, rather than the statist propaganda. www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/493636.html It seems that in all too many instances more gun control(properly called victim disarmament) leads to MORE violence, not less. As for the hysteria about nudity, well thats all too typical of the American perspective on such matters. I'm hoping we will grow out of it some day, but don't hold your breath. Its going to take awhile.
Yeah, but in the end I have to ask "why".

Agreed! You are absolutely right, it does infact bring nothing besides what you already pointed out, there are no features that have been announced that need characters to be nude, my orginal point tho was why the overreaction, it is interesting that people are ok with chopping eachother's heads off and mutilate limbs but when it comes to nudity "ohh no! we wont have that!", I think on the other hand it will also provide an interesting social case study as to what people will do, will most of the community alienate the people who choose to roleplay naked for whatever reason, will this create a sort of "underground" community within the game and will this help create a more realistic social diversification, im intrigued by this.
Sorry but I have to agree with one of the posters here, US, the country with more guns on the streets, with highest gun crime, highest school shootings and with the most pornography production in the world and your worried about a game showing a 3D penis?! Its not like your character is going to be horny waiting to have intercourse.
I remember my 5th grade science manual it had a drawing of a penis and god forbid a vagina, If I remember correctly it wasnt A rated.
What has that got to do with anything? I am not even from US.
However I am a longtime RPG and MMORPG player and never have I felt the need to have full frontal nutidy in those games. What would be the point? And dont say for roleplaying reasons, what roleplaying would be prevented if game did not let you show/see genitalia.
However the negatives are much greater than the benefits. Imagine how much harrasment this could lead to with juvenile people running around naked and annoying other people. Because lets face it, open PvP games seem to have a tendency to draw alot of immature jerks. Also, if we are to be realistic there should be a penalty for running around naked in public places. So then the devs need to implement code for that and so on.
My point is that it is not needed and not one line of code should be written for something that is completely unneccessary and can create problems.

I just mentioned US because people were throwing it around did not meant to imply that you were from the US, also if you read my post above yours I absolutely agree there is no feature that requires you to be naked other than what was already mentioned. The devs obviously have already put that in game so its not gonna change (even tho they might add underwear to characters), also, from reports with armor you can die in 3 - 4 hits from a sword I really doubt anyone naked will survive long enough to harrass other people.
Like I mentioned above it will be interesting to see what happens, I see the dangers of it, of everyone being somehow drawn into this harrassment thing, BUT from the feedback the nudity has been getting I think players will enforce some sort of policy upon this and this will probably become something that is looked down upon. Might be hard to enforce these rules from the start but once player cities and villages start getting estabilished who cares about the penalties, my land.. my rules anyone naked will just die instantly.

MO is a sandbox game. Players should be in control of what is happening in the game, specially between them. So let the community of players solve this.
I understand neither the childish tittering over the notion nor the prudish raging against it. As far as I am concerned, this is just another notch in the belt of realism Mortal Online wears in attempting to simulate their world. I respect a developer that sticks to their guns in this manner. See: CCP.

What a bunch of drivel, again, learn how to spell and use proper grammar. You are either the one who is below 18 or you have some severe mental issues. Instead of having an age limit they should have an IQ limit of 65. That would filter out imbeciles like yourself.
You are 12 right? U can't play MO, you don't have the proper age, i'm really sorry if you parents don't allow you to play and get mad. don't blame us and devs, go play another game that fit u age, there are a lot (Darkfall for example is pretty similar), why try to change this for lowering the rating? Your behavior don't make sense at all.

If you have not downloaded the nifty powerpoint explaining the game, please do so. MO appears to be about immersion. And immersion at this magnitude includes as many realistic touches as possible. If something is missing it becomes obvious, like a stain on the wall where a picture used to be, where as you might not notice if it were there all along. Are any of the devs making it a mission to have genitals in the game? Probably not. But without them the avatars might feel like half-assed, neuter people and out of place in the world that will rely heavily on blood lineage. If the only experience with nudity you have is through character creation or in the privacy of your avatar's house, feeling complete as an avatar connects with you the player, and that is the realism I believe the devs are trying to find. You become more invested as a player because your avatar will now be more like you. Of course, there are plenty of other realistic touches that reinforce this connection that aren't getting mention here. Just don't think this is your standard mmo with sex organs. There are plenty of really interesting ideas with this mmo.
What I don't imagine happening is rampant, naked avatars running around and mooning everyone. Why? The entire experience is in first-person view. No 3rd-person perspectives to see any reactions. Also, avatars will not be able to run uninhibitedly through other avatars or objects. That means greifers can be literally cornered or run down. No greifer wants to be face-to-face with the greived in that kind of way.

But you are wrong there. MO is a sandbox game but it has a notoriety system which, supposedly, take care of unwanted behaviour such as griefing. If you become flagged as a murderor NPCs wont trade with you and NPC guards in cities may attack you.
So MO is not a community only game.
Again, those of you who are claiming that having genitalia is for realism. Grow up, RPGs have had no nudity or porn for decades and this has not made them less realistic. I would rather say the opposite, freely running around naked would NOT be realistic in a high fantasy setting. Even in the real world full frontal nudity is severly restricted and many countries has law prohibiting you from doing so in public areas.

You give him reason with your response, " real world full frontal nudity is severly restricted and many countries has law prohibiting you from doing so in public areas", so maybe you can adjust the guards as soon as cities are available to attack people completely naked, maybe players can create a law in certain areas that they will kill anyone naked?

Yes, I mentioned in a previous post that devs could do that but I also mentioned that taking precious dev time for something that is completely unneccessary to begin with, like full frontal nudity, is just stupid in a high fantasy MMORPG.
Did you ever need to have full frontal nudity in LOTR? D&D? No, because that is not what high fantasy are about. And being able to loot someones underwear (as someone mentioned) is beyond stupid.
So my point is, by having full frontal nudity, the devs will, sooner or later, have to deal with the problems that will arise, such as running around naked in town, so why waste time to have it to begin with? They should spend more time designing good looking armor than an anatomically correct penis.
You just have to laugh. In a game full of killing, people get up in arms over a bit of nudity. Maybe thet's why the world is in such a mess.
No, thats just a symptom. The main reason is simple:Power. The world breaks down in to two groups(at its most fundamental) those who want to control other people, and those who don't. Control is the real reason that governments exist. The Few have always sought control of the Many(their lifes and resources). Only the excuses/justifications have changed over the ages.
You just have to laugh. In a game full of killing, people get up in arms over a bit of nudity. Maybe thet's why the world is in such a mess.
Get of your high horse, noone is getting up in arms over nudity, I watch porn all the time. However I don't think it belongs in an MMORPG. It serves no purpose and will only create problems.
This is no official review. It's promotion by a developer
If a site like MMORPG.com or IGN.com writes a review, then it's review
Hmmm what are you on about?! That was written by a player, wether you want to call it a personal review a player review or whatever its a review a PLAYER REVIEWED the game. It was posted by the developers but its still the player who wrote the REVIEW.
Now you can say that reviews are more acurate when they are made by a gaming site , fair enough its your opinion, but what was posted was a review non the less.
Get of your high horse, noone is getting up in arms over nudity, I watch porn all the time. However I don't think it belongs in an MMORPG. It serves no purpose and will only create problems.
then don't fucking play it. It's really that easy.

See: CCP.
Well said.
Well said.
Also in agreement.

Get of your high horse, noone is getting up in arms over nudity, I watch porn all the time. However I don't think it belongs in an MMORPG. It serves no purpose and will only create problems.

Hmmm what are you on about?! That was written by a player, wether you want to call it a personal review a player review or whatever its a review a PLAYER REVIEWED the game. It was posted by the developers but its still the player who wrote the REVIEW.
Now you can say that reviews are more acurate when they are made by a gaming site , fair enough its your opinion, but what was posted was a review non the less.
then don't fucking play it. It's really that easy.
