Well I was one of the 500 lucky be to win a beta spot. During registration I noticed that you must have a credit card to play the beta...I do not own a credit card, nor do my parents, making it an extremely annoying situation. So I'll have to ask around and convince someone that I'm not using their credit card to buy anything. Im sure they have their reasons for including this in the registration, but I find it extremely irritating.

Ive never heard such thing to thest their billing system on beta testers. That is a bit odd, imo.
I have been in a few betas and never have had them ask for a credit card. I do find it odd
You are not alone mate. I do not own a credit card so my account is kinda useless...so sad

sorry if this is dumb, but... could someone give me a step by step description of what they did after recieving the email?
I followed the link, but it wanted me to log in! i thought we had to sign up? so i clicked the "If you are a new user..." and filled out the form, but it just reloaded the page when i clicked "Submit". help me, please!
They started doing this with City of Heroes beta.
I received the email myself and I do have a crdit card. But no other game I have beta tested has needed a credit card number. So, they might as well redraw for my spot too. No game should need a credit card to play a beta. Yea, we may be able to play the game, but last time I looked we were helping them out and not the other way around. They have other ways of checking the billing system instead of asking the people to add their credit cards to the process. And they they did say on there that they were going to charge like 10 cents to hold some spot or something. So, I guess no Matrix Online for me. Have fun guys.

I also recieved an email stating that I had been chosen to beta test 'The Matrix Online' the only problem was that the email was sent at 2:28AM GMT, so whilst I was asleep, and then to add to it I have been ill all day and so it was impossible to access my email untill it was too late. Reading Drac's post however it seems that I wouldn't have been able to test it myself anyway as Drac said that you were required to use a credit card in order to test it, seems a bit stupid in my eyes.

The CC is needed so that they can make sure that you are who you claim to be, and that you are old enough so that the NDA can be legally enforceable.
See, and NDA, or even EULA, is a legally binding contract. However, if you're under age, these contracts cannot be enforced on you.
So you see that legally, if a minor got into the beta, they coud go blabbing all over the internet about the game , breaking the NDA, and Monolith/Sega/WB/etc wouldn't be able to do squat.
So, you may not like it, but I'm willing to bet it becomes a standard in teh industry soon because of all teh 'tards out there.
On a good note, many places sell pre-paid credit-cards....they work kinda like a phone card. You put, say, $20 on the card when you buy it, and use it for stuff like this. That way of someone somehow gets the number, they don't get squat.
See, tehre's ways to do it if you really want to, but you;d have to stop whining long enough to actually bother to do it.

i also got a notification email only i guess i was too late to reply i checked this morning b4 i left for work nothing , 4 hours later i come back at lunch time to take dog for a walk , and there it was, clicked the link to find i missed out

Same with me, thats not funny...i was happy about the selection, but a cc in a betatest??? hmm, first time a have noticed on all the beta test, sry warner bros.

I have, its nothing really that odd. I've seen it on games that weren't even beta's, they were released and giving you a free two week trial. Instead of coding up two completely different registration processes, they just use the one and just don't charge you anything.
To the people who complain about needing a credit card:
I really don't see a problem here. You people should be happy that you got picked for the beta testing instead of already complaining about something. If you don't like it then give it to someone else. Heck, even a kid can go to the bank and get a debit card (which you can use just like a credit card).
All in all, be happy you got picked to test out a game before anyone else.
Hmm...that dosent hold up dude, ppl has registerd and used moms or dads cc ...it will work as long as the cardowner lives at the same adress as the one getting in the beta, so therefor the EULA is CRAP ....cause it means that 9 years old BoB can use moms or dads cc and get in.

So what you're saying is if we think something is wrong or we don't agree with something we are whiners. Well here is another one for you. Why are you whining about people whining about the ones who have a problem with supplying a CC for a beta test. So what if mmorpg.com required a CC to register for their site? Would you still think it is ok if they asked you to supply a CC to join this site that we post and stuff on. Your reply would be they don't need a CC for this site right? Well, I say the same thing for any Beta test. If they are so worried about people being of legal age, well then let them do an internal beta test with their own programmers. If you think this is what to come with beta tests, well more power to them Because they are gonna find less and less people who are willing to supply CC whenever someone wants one. You only have to be screwed once and you'll know what I'm talking about.
Well enough of my rambling....but just because someone doesnt agree with a process or something to that effect doesn't mean they are whining. Because if everyone believes that, well then we are all whiners

hey, whatever, man. There are already a LOT (and I mean a LOT) of beta testers. They happily gave thier info, and they are happily playing (testing) the game. In fact, teh amount of testers already rivals the current population of many live games.
I apologise for the "whiner" comment, but I just get so sick and tired of people bashing this game just because it's some cool trend or something. The game is great, and I really wish I could say HOW great, and why, but I can't.
But there's a lot of us that are just dying to watch these bashers eating mass quantities of "crow" when the game is released.

Whar its not about the fact that you have to give up any info (not for me anyway), its about making a registrationprocess that dosent work. There a 100's of ppl that has won beta keys (im one) that cant join in because of it, some because they dont have a cc and other because there cc doesnt allow the small transfers WB wants them to do. We are talking about 1 of the world biggest cc's VISA amongst others.
WB should have made sure that this would work and that so many ppl wouldnt be kept out of the beta because of it. Its a wasit of WB's time and the potential betatesters time, not to mention the cost in workhours for WB trying to fix it (if they do) or the hours spent on replying to emails sent to their support.
Almost every other game on the market has been able to make a betatest without this demand for cc, sure u need to use your cc to play the game. But that is another matter, if i take my case its because my cc (VISA) does not allow a transfer of 10 c (secure card ..to safegard me as a user from scams and frauds) but i havent had any problems anywhere else on the net, including 3 years of playing DaoC and shopping 100 of times online. Before you yell get some cash on your card, ive got about 3000$ on it.
Try go read on the MxO boards and youll see that it isnt only the cc issue that are bad, ppl cant get in, cant dl the game and the dont get any help from WB support. I myself have emailed WB support 5 times nad havent even gotten an answer from them yet. Those that actually has gotten an reply from WB support are told that they might be able to fix the problem by jan 2005.
Thses fact does not give me as a gamer the nessasary confidence in WB that i actually would go buy the game without knowing anything about it , and no Whar im not a noob ive been playing computer games for more that 15 years.
Im happy for all you ppl that can play the game, it has potential to be real good. But sadly im one of those not take in to concideration by WB. Last but not least ....WB isnt doing us a favor to let us beta test, its us doing them a favor ....improving the game they are gonna sell ...betatesters makes the game better and therefor WB will sell more games, i just dont think they are of to a good start.

well, that was nicely put. Ever think of getting a pre-paid CC and putting like $20 on it? I know master card makes some that are very good, I use one for all my trial accounts to mmorpg's so I don't get billed if I forget to cancel before the end of the trial.
Yes, it really sucks that support is taking so long to get back to people. But when I submit a bug report, I get a response within an hour usually. These guys are putting everythng they have into development. Yeah, it sucks that they can't set aside a few people to adress beta registration issues, but I'd rather have a smoothly running game on release.
If there were any way that I could PERSONALLY help the individuals like yourself get the beta working, I would. I know how badly I wanted into this game, and I do feel bad that people can't get in, AND the release has been pushed back (with good reason).
However, there's a few trolls who take every chance they get to bash this game rather unfairly. They take every potentially negative thing and blow it way out of proportion, just to run it down. I'm sure you can see examples of this in both the EQ and WoW forums and ratings. You get lame fanbois who seem to think that it's not enough to support their favorite game, they need to run every other game into the dirt as well. These are the people I'm bitching and raving about, man. Not you, or the other people who have legitimate issues that need sorting.
So please, don't misunderstand me, m8. The beta registration process sucks, but there are work-arounds. Use a pre-paid CC for the registration, make sure you have MxO forum account before signing up to avoid the registration loop, and download the installer as soon as you get the link, because it's only valid for a set (small) amount of time. These are examples, not a complete set of work-arounds, mind you. there are too many issues for me to discuss here.
Anyway....happy holidays people. cheer up. maybe some of you are bummed that you can't get in early, and I understand, but at least you know that there are people working HARD at making this game as smooth and flawless as possible for launch, so when you CAN play, you won't have to deal with frustration and difficulties.

Whaq nice to see a mature and intelligent response. I did register at MoX before adding the key. Well nevermind its all in the past and since i havent heard from WB support im kind of dropping getting in to the beta.

I too was accepted for Beta, and I was extremely dissapointed with the fact that they required their testers to give them their Crdit Card numbers! To top things off, they had an extremely limited range of usable cards! Usually my bank card works for this sort of stuff, but here you have to choose between like American Express, MasterCard and VISA!

well i got in and i have played it , but i am disapointed. The game is laggy and ugly. The interface does not appeal to me at all. But ppls taste are diffrent...diffrent strokes for diffrent folks
