One of the big complaints for westerners with FFXI was the lack of a dedicated server. I know SE wanted to promote international gameplay so they never accomodated the request. It didn't help that FFXI had been going in Japan for some time before westerners were able to start so all of the existing servers were dominated by Japanese players.
With FFXIV that won't be the case. We'll get to start at the same time as other regions. So assuming SE doesn't devote servers to specific regions (which last I checked they hadn't made a decision to do), should we, the players, take the initiative and pick our own "unofficial" NA servers? Same question for the Europeans... should they pick "unofficial" EU servers?

no
i dont think there should be any server which is prodomiantly any region. i think playing with all regions is fine. my biggest problem was the japanese had a head start on us. if thats not the case this time, then there should be no reason to pick a unofficial na server or europe.
I don't think so. One of the best parts of FFXI was the wide array of nationalities on all the servers and how that kept the server populated nearly 24/7. I loved some morning waking up at 6am and logging in to the Japanese prime time and seeing the server as full as ever. I look forward to that dynamic of FFXIV.
There are already tons of topics about this on plenty of forums and most people do not want this, nor do I.

Real life brings repetition and pointlessness too. The only thing real life offers is Great graphics. Its kinda expensive too and way to dependent on the cash shop. Totally pay to win as well. No thank you. Ill stick to my games.
Yeah, because who want's to be able to have a friendly chat with people while playing an MMO.
that is one option but i think internationality is one thing thta square enix should be proud of .the ping rate on final fantasy 11 was the most stable i could get while travelling different countries.
Internationality is a great thing. I had friends from Canada, US, Japan, German, Belgium, France, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and Philippines etc. in FFXI. I don't want to get stuck with European players on an EU server, that'd be bad enough to make me quit.
I agree completely. MMOGs should help being the worlds gamers closer together, not seperated in little cages depending on where you live.
Alot can be said about SoE, and alot of it will likely be true as well. But atleast they do not divide the world as other companies tend to do.

WHAT!? I had the ability to speak to japanese, french, & spanish speaking players online. With a little bit of logic, wit and auto translate function... You could speak to who ever you wanted...................

I agree as well. Having international servers and sharing a server with tons of different people around the world was awesome. It was another dynamic to Final Fantasy XI. The fact that i could see Kanji on the screen then French or German. I personally thought that it was pretty cool. Especially when they wanted to try to conversate with me. It was always a cool experience and something that is missing in other MMO's!
NO
Buy a Good Damn Server and Make it Just a Single Shard!!!!!!!!
Not that It matters at launch, I rember the world pass... Hopfully this New lvling system meens that we will be able to play with our Friends who can play twice as long as us and not be Screwed.
If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

yes.
Why?
JP ONRY
F*CK That. i'm sick of it.
I remember SE saying they wanted the game to have no "peak hours," which is why they had international servers. However, if you ever PLAYED ffxi, you'll know how there *are* peak hours - as an NA player who does not speak japanese, i had extreme difficulty getting parties during JP primetime. My gear was quite good (i have had a 94 profession for many years, so i made plenty-o-gil, and i had the patience to camp Ra/Ex dropping mobs), yet people still would refuse to party because i was not japanese.
And what made it worse is that they say "JP ONRY" when it comes to jobs like Dragoon, Warrior, thief, etc, but when it comes to Bard, Red Mage, oh sh*t, forget JP ONRY, they needed a buffer. I got invites on my red mage and when i'd search the person their comment would read something like "NA <party> <no thanks>".
If you can get the japanese playerbase, as a collective, to shed their xenophobia then i'm all for international servers.
It's because of the headstart JP's got that made them hate us. Now we start at the same line, so they need to cope with us. Also, there's not much JP ONRY left anymore anyway- only Bards at 75 do it most of the time. Just be polite and they'll be happy to join. You can do that, can't you?
Plus, if you don't play in normal times those US servers you'd be stuck in would be empty most of the time.
My answer on this depends. I believe in FFXI, the Americans had a 2 minute delay or something to that affect behind the Japanese. Therefore, a limited supply vendor would run out of mats, because a Japanese player would buy up the crafting mats when they became available. Then the American player was SOL. If this is still going to be the case, then I won't touch this game with a 10 foot pole if we dont have dedicated servers. If this delay does not exist, then i'm all for international co op!
We're talking about <0.5 seconds delay here, lol.
Are you saying that FFIV will be .5 seconds behind, or are you stating that there was only a .5 second delay from vendors in FFXI. I believe your wrong if your stating that there was only a half second delay in their last mmo. I only played it for 3-4 months, but I remember a substantial delay, it was so bad, that everytime mats became available when the shops opened, the mats needed to craft or make gil with were long gone. This didn't make me a happy camper.
Every servers will be jp/NA/EU just like FFXI... you won't have problem finding people from your own country at any server
Only .5 second delay in FFXI, nothing more.
How would 2mins+ delay even work? Vana'diel times are server specific, when a shop opens for JP it opens for US and EU. The time will be Firesday 8:00 AM for Everyone on the server. Now if there was 2 mins delay, you couldn't access the shop before like 9:00 AM, but that doesn't make sense.
I don't know what was your problem with the shops, but the delay wasn't it.
I'm sorry but just because someone doesn't want to party with you does not mean they are xenophobic please look it up, i would not want a healer that cant understand me ether simple as that.
I love the fact that there aren't servers for specific regions! You get to meet and talk to people from all over the world! It's great, I hope they don't take it away in FFXIV
Currently Playing: FFXIV:ARR
Looking Forward to: Wildstar
I'm with you... I have never had a problem playing with Japanese players.
However, they do have ettiquete than NA/EU, which may be why they stereotype. I remember finding a whole list of "rules" that are different from Eastern and Western parties. One was that Eastern PTs tend to last a few hours than disband, whereas Western PTs will replace members who leave. This sort of thing may be where some of the disapproval comes from because you have an American come into a party at 12am for only like 30 minutes then want to go. It just pisses them off.
When I'm partying I usually try to keep a few of these things in mind. I wish I could find that list of "rules" again, it was very helpful...
Let it be known that I hate WoW with a passion and will defend almost any MMORPG against it.
Current: FFXI (PC/360)
Want: FFXIV, Stargate Worlds, Star Trek Online
Past: AC, AoC, AO, Atlantica Online, CoH/V, DAoC, Dungeon Runners, D&DO, EVE, Everquest I+II, FlyFF, GW (all), Lineage 2, LOTRO, Mabinogi, Maplestory, PSO (DC/Xbox/PC), PSU (PC/360), PlanetSide, RO, Shadowbane, SWG (Pre-NGE), SotNW, TR, UO, Warhammer Online, WoW, WWIIO
I personally think there shouldn't be a need to pick a NA/EU server at all. The more diverse we get amongst all servers the more enjoyable the game will be in the long run. The one thing I valued from playing FFXI as opposed to other games was the fact that we weren't limited to basically play with our own kind. I happened to learn some Japanese while playing in parties with them. That and the Auto-Translate feature which I'm sure is coming in FFXIV makes things much more fun. just my 2 cents
I am all for the combined servers, play'd FFXI for 2 years and I never ran into any problems with it. In fact alot of times it was funny/fun chatting with some one when you had to use the tranulator.
(And I made friends all over the world).....VERY enjoyable experience.

Be like it was back in the day ... you get assigned a server and you have no choice ... you had to make friends that way ...
the game does just fine as it is
