I recently finished an Aion beta weekend. I went through all sorts of hoops just to get the damn thing installed, but nevertheless, accomplished the task and played for much of the time allotted.
I had fun playing, but I'm not sure what sort of content (if any) is available for the long term. Does anyone know if there is content along the lines of guild cities, housing, or other features that aren't directly tied into combat?
Everyone seems to pumped about this game and I'm trying to figure out just what makes it different from other fantasy MMOs out there.

Aion does not offer much you haven't seen before. It DOES give you what you have played before and liked in a shiny new package. Aion does mmo right.
I think I've read that they are working on player/guild housing. They are trying to work out the details regarding land mass and over crowding. I'm guessing they will create some kind of instance for housing.
I guess I'm just kind of confused by all the hype surrounding this game. It's a very polished game (despite a few lag spikes here and there) and I like the look, feel, and polished nature of its features, but nothing is so amazing that it deserves the massive amount of hype based on what I've seen so far. Which is, of course, why I'm asking what else there is to the game and if there's something I just haven't seen yet that just blows people away.

It just does it all in a good/better way than previous games did.
The main pull of this game I believe is the Pvp, kind of like how DAoC was. (and what WAR failed to do)
i'd recommend anyone who played and still misses Daoc to give this game a try, really it's as close as I think we're going to get.

Considering the turds we've received these last years, Aion is a blessing, at least devs can focus their patches on content (see 1.1,1.2 and 1.5) and originality instead of hotfixes and thing that should have been in the release.

Keep in mind you only played the first 20 levels of the game. You dont reach the main center point of the game till you hit Lvl 25 and go out to the Abyss. The big attraction to Aion is the PvP that will happen once you get to the abyss. The whole PvPvE thing sounds like loads of fun and i cant wait to try it out once the next beta rolls around and we get to go to the abyss. like i said before though this game really doesnt start getting fun till you get out to the abyss. the first 20 levels suck big time cause you dont have many skills and there isnt any pvp.

I am keeping that in mind, which is why I'm asking if anyone who has played the full version could comment on those features I did not get to experience. I'm hoping that Aion is not yet another MMO being hyped out the ying yang just because it's new and shiny. I've been playing MMOs since 1999, so I have expectations that new MMOs will at least have a few unique elements.

Well Aion doesnt really bring anything new to the MMORPG world. its basically just a bunch of stuff from other games all smooshed into one well polished and shiney new game. the only feature that it brings that is sorta new is the arieal combat. which really isnt new. This game just took the stuff from other games and perfected it. Aion is a game that is for people who arnt looking for anything new, just a well polished game that is what they are used to.

I played my first beta this weekend, and I really liked it.
As many already said, there's nothing really new but it's a combination of all good things from other games and it's brought together very well.
For those who want to experience some PVP, you can always go to the Sanctum Coliseum. You can earn some points there to improve your soldier rank. I failed miserably but it still was fun :-P

The game actually isn't linear, the first 25 levels is. Aion succeeds in ways WoW failed. What`happened to the World PvP in WoW? Does it matter anymore? Nope. In Aion it does and it's a prime focus, there is no other game right now that does World PvP as well and polished as Aion does.
OP there is a post on this forum by kilkil2 I think you should read. He is a level 50 player in the Korean version and gives out a ton of info and covers exactly what you are inquiring about. Maybe it can shed some light for you.
By the way, Aion offers a PvPvE "Battleground" and Arcade-style Instances.
The PvPvE battleground works as a race to kill a Balaur (the NPC race) commander inside a ship, players have many different routes to take which use different strategies. Killing enemy monsters award them points, and killing enemy players (you may stumble on the enemy group from the other race that is in the same ship) will drain points from them.
There is a set time and whoever gets more points in the end wins, be it the end by commander death or by time out.
And the PvE instances, like I said before, work in an arcade-style (that is what they call 'em). They offer you different paths with different difficulties, and the faster you get through to the boss, the stronger he will be and better loot he will carry. Sounds a lot more interesting to me than the usual instanced dungeons concept.
Hmm, the description of PvPvE open realm is not really accurate. Tho the Balur are the third faction and yes, there is the "boss" balaur carrier ship, the RvR itself is very very important as well. There are 8 castles in the Abyss, each uniquely designed and with a farmable instanced dungeon inside (from v1.5). Obviously the faction that holds the castle gets to farm the instance which is a good reason to defend it. In addition castles give gold income to the leader of the guild who claimed it. (info from kilkil2, the nice korean guy)
The third faction, the npc Balaur, can attack and take over player-held castles, especially if they're left vacant, and even join ongoing sieges. They randomly ally with one player faction or the other and it seems that they tend to help the underdog. (dev interview info)
And finally, besides the Abyss and PvP instances there is the raiding option. The PvE zones have portals to the oposing realm which periodically open and close. You can go through them and lay waste to the enemies PvE zones... However you are out of your own territorry and respawning can get risky (the kisk respawn stone that you drop can be very easily destroyed). There are even infiltration quests that require you to go and do damage to the enemies soft underbelly.

Oh soz, my mistake then.
Yeah, the insta battlegrounds were pretty reviled in WAR until they whittled their rewards to down below the open RvR ones. Now it's a cool way to spend the 15 minutes waiting for someone to log in , or the warband to assemble. Nice, I have nothing whatsoever against instanced PvP as long as the world PvP is alive and well.
Aion has a very well planned RvR pvp setup. The game is also offering some pve enhancements (aka raids / instances) but even these will be in a pvp area. I would agree that if you like pvp, you should give Aion a try.
