Ok, so, I’m seeking some opinions. First off let me say that I enjoy combat and the PvP type of content of EVE. This game seems to especially cater to my apparently unprovoked and senseless sense of when to kill people and when not to kill people. I thoroughly enjoy the open aspects of EVE and the true in-depth content of the game. Now with all that being said please let me know if I’m on the right track.
I haven’t played a lot per say, I’m not 18 anymore, but I have made some runs through 0.5 and below sectors while my knuckles are white with the anticipation of sudden combat. I’ve lost a ship and it hurt. It hurt real bad, but it was extremely thrilling. Since I enjoy PvP and essentially loathe quests, is random PvP what I can expect from this game in the long run? Can I make money this way? Would my future be with a clan/group/corp which has control of some 0.0 sector? Would my time be filled with never ending battles for disheveled solar systems as my clan mates open batteries on our enemies and our prey alike? Or am I glorifying the combat aspects of this game a bit too much?
I would REALLY appreciate your input. Your opinions will definitely help me decide if I extend my 14-day trial. Don’t sugar coat it; just tell me like it is.

I don't play Eve, but I know for a fact their are people that play that make their money just from pvp kills.
You can salvage the wreckage of your decimated opponents (be they npc or player) and sell their loot / fittings / cargo and absolutely play entirely through pvp. Find a good corp to wreck some peeps with as EVE is much less risky with multiple people. And with a good corp you can get help with fittings / ships / blueprints / whatever.
If I read your question correctly, I think what you are looking for is to join a pirate clan. Pirates can in fact do well money wise if you are good enough, meaning that you kill more than you get killed. It is kind of random with a pirate corp but only random in the sense of you never know if your going to have a lot of traffic through the area your killing in. Its going to all boil down to your abilities. If your good enough, you can do well pirating. Regular 0.0 corps are going to be about keeping that corp alive and expanding territory so your going to have lots of fighting there to. Personally, I like doing plain level 4 missions for money. You can easily make 20-40 million+ in less than an hour. However, it is rather boring unless you try to do it in .4 or lower.
With pirates, its all about the luck of what doesnt get destroyed when you blow up a ship. I have seen people make 100+million off of 1 item that didnt get destroyed. So, its all about how you want to make money.
There are many types of PVP in EVE. I would say what you are describing is like being a scavenger. I think what you may be missing is that in order for the game to work the way it does a large portion of the player base must be involved in industry. This is what they enjoy and what the game means to them. That's not to say they are not involved in combat, but that combat stems from there empire building. Small gangs often harass these players and catch them off guard. In the end pirate’s feed of the work they do. I would think being in the combat wing for one such group would be more exciting and profitable, as the battles between power blocks is usually of a higher level. With that said there is no question piracy in EVE is fun and profitable, I'm just not sure it really represents the games, or PVP's, true depth. I do think it's a starting point and a good place to build up skills and experience tho.
I guess I was a little cought up in the moment or perhaps the idea. Do clans exist which support fighter/escort/support type wings withing the greater scope of the game? For instance there might be a clan which is focused on trading, mining and the like but requires the dedication of a few people who will protect the cargo/mining operation while they work?
I'm just extremely bored with the cookie cutter, "take package to so and so then return to me and I give you experience" mold. Can you still earn money from being a mercenary or...or a soldier? From your answers thus far I'm guessing that you can. Perhaps a little piracy on the side but the focus can still lie within the frame of protection and patrolls. I would rather protect territory for a clan than do hit and run missions and hope for scraps.
Ok, I've made a decision. Thanks.
I am not very sure what you are asking for...
You can't really make ISK off the PVP unless you focus very much on it - you will jump on transport ships to get their cargo or pick on expensive fitted mission runners.
So if that answers your question - regular PVP does not cover your losses and you won't make the ISK out of it.
There are many ways to PVP since you can attack anyone anywhere. If you make ISK by PVPing is solely on your creativity.
Systems with securiy rating 0.4 and below is compulsory combat space so any ship that should not be flown solo needs protection(attention, hehe) there.
EVE got fully functional, meaningfull territorial warfare so yes, you have to fight and defend space for your corporation/alliance.
I have been playing EVE for about a year now.
In terms of PVP, I have never had a bigger thrill than being involved in massive fleet battles in 0.0 space. Hundreds of players on each side, with massive ships and lots to lose fighting for territory. I truly admire the tactics of FC's in these situations and cannot compare this to any game out there. Low-sec roaming and empire wars are generally boring, as sometimes you have to sit and travel for a long time. But 0.0, if a system is hotly contested, then its the best PVP experience out there.
Give it a try...

Making money in pvp can be done but it requires you to limit yourself to a certain play style.
To make money in pvp you need to do more then kill more then you lose isk wise. If you look at Battleclinic or w/e you'll see plenty of corps who can't live off pvp with a positive lost/destroyed isk ratio. This is because the majority of the money thrown into pvp is lost, not transfered. The ship's hull is probably half the total cost or more and then there are the destroyed items. Also hauling the stuff out of low sec to sell is risky.
Oh and low sec pirating will make it hard to make money in other ways unless you have an alt for that. Ratting in low sec is terrible because you'll be switching places with your targets. To rat safely your going to need to lose a whole bunch of time running away, and maybe lose your ship a couple times in gatecamps.
There are two obvious ways to make money off of piracy. Cheapfit ships or giant blobs. Cheapfit ships mean having a hard time finding fights you can win, giant blobs means needing a group and higher sp so you can take gate gun fire. If you keep with super cheap ships your going to have a hard time finding fights and the people you fight with and win are going to be retards.
Its satisfying to have a hulk drop 5 T2 drones in a belt when he runs away from your punisher/rifter and having them fully pay for the next ship but its also dissapointing to know you'd make the cost of your frigate nearly instantly running missions. Also roaming through low sec for three hours without finding targets you can beat is frustrating.
Being in a blob and dropping 15 cruisers on a single battleship who was dumb enough to be ratting when someone came into his belt and scrammed him can also be anticlimatic but usually pays off better.
Please remember that the battleship/cruiser or w/e ratting is going to be you when your semi afk trying to get your standing back up so you can make 10x as much money for no risk running missions in high sec, probably so you can come back to low sec and repeat the cycle in a more expensive ship that you'll consider cheap after you build up a warchest.
