Best PVP MMORPG you've ever played

Just wondering what everyone here considers to be the best PvP they've experienced in a MMORPG. So far for me its been Asheron's Call, so here's the list...I'm sorry I your choice is Lineage, AoC, LoTRO, City of Heroes, etc. but I can only list 10, so please post what it is if it's not listed.

Gotta go with DAOC.  I've played everything on the list except for AC and UO.

    Voted AC.

Lineage 2. Loved the world pvp with the risk of dropping items/reward of picking someone elses up. Never got into castle sieging but I imagine I would have liked it even more if I had.

I picked DAOC b/c i played that game for 3 years and i always loved open RVR!

(rvr in WAR is not as good)

One game i played a while back was face of man kind. Great pvp! and also had a player run economy.

    1. Asheron's Call - Played a little but didn't do enough PvPing to justify grading it. Did get ganked plenty of times though.
    2. Dark Age of Camelot - RvR was cool, but with DAoC I lost interest before I even hit 50. Picking a cleric had a lot to do with it.
    3. Darkfall - No comment, not played
    4. Eve Online - Played in beta and didn't do any extensive PvPing so I cannot vouch for it.
    5. Guild Wars - No comment, not played
    6. Shadowbane - Logged in for about 30mins before I became fresh fish for vets, trying to start w/o a guild was pointless.
    7. Star Wars Galaxies - Terrible, the balance on this game sucked big time.
    8. Ultima Online - Nothing more than a gankfest for of naked men, if you say otherwise you fail.
    9. Warhammer - No comment, not played
    10. World of Warcraft - Gets my vote for having the best response times and quick pacing fights. Also it gets points for TM/SS raids.

A few reasons why Asheron's Call is the best on the list:

Levels and equipment played little part in fights, a level 30 could take on a level 60 or 70 provided he had researched all the spells he needed.  This was partially due to Asheron's Call being the first game to implement FPS style elements of being able to dodge arrows and spells.

No game mechanics were required for town and dungeon ownership to take place, which means people took over towns and dungeons by controlling them with force and persistance because of their natural utility, rather than something artificially implemented like gold payouts for controlling a point for a certain amount of time.

Excellent community which was balanced with players siding themselves as Anti, PK, or Neutral, unlike most MMORPGs where your whole community is full of asshole griefers.  There was a bit of natural RP that arose from this composition of players.

Quests were not instanced, which means people had to fight over rewards, and the rewards were worth fighting over.

Huge story events to fight over as well, which further polarized the players and gave interesting conflict.  It was especially great when the most evil clan on the PvP server swore allegiance to this big evil demon dev controlled character.

    UO pre trammal.

    DAoC Mordred

    Shadowbane

    Darkfall

Why on earth is WoW on that list?  Its not a PvP mmo.  Its not even about war!

Voted DaoC. Clearly during its heyday DaoC was an amazing pvp(rvr) experience. The voters agree nearly 2-1 of its closest competitor as well.

I think honorable mention should be given to Planetside. It should have made the list in place of DF or SWG. Id bet you could combine the votes for both of those games into fans of Planetside.

Everyone highly rated DAOC and when I played it all I saw was too many watered down classes where I couldn't find a fun one. Bad animations and clunky movement with a really horrible to use UI, moving my character felt like moving a brick. I tried some of this amazing PVP people go on about but it just seemed really boring like ranged clssses are OP or something. The level design was piss poor and it done a crap job of letting a new player know what he's meant to do.

My fave PVP is Arena in WoW because I just love doing 2 vs 2 with my friend as it gives you a rush knowing it all comes down to your skill. I hate PVP where theres like 20 vs 20 battlegrounds and it all comes down to team work because the teams never work together and when you come up against a guild they own ya. I just prefer fighting via my own skill and Arena lets me do that. Also WoW has the best combat mechanics and it has the best movement and UI, the game is just so smooth and nice to play. WoW is also the only class based mmo where each class is fun to play and pretty balanced. People complain about balance in WoW but it's much better than all the other mmo's I've played, SWG some professions didn't even work lol.

I would like EVE's PVP but lack of arena in game like I want the alliance tournament to be made into a in game feature with rankings. Also capital ships ruined 0.0 for me because they've turned into the new battleships of old where everyone got into a Raven lol.

Why Wouldn't WoW be on this list, when Blizzard has been developing PVP content for, O say 5 years now, and the bloody backdrop is 2 warring factions on the brink of mutual annihilation.

That leaves us with PvP content [Its not a PvP mmo], War [Its not even about war!], and a mindless mmorpg.com forum troll spewing regurgitated WoW hate, who happens to be you.

Believe me, you could attack WoW from a myriad of different angles, like it's cyclical and repetitive endgame, it's gear centric measurements of success, it's piss poor music and dubious art direction, etc, and I'de probably agree with most of your complaints, or at least see where you're coming from, but to dismiss WoW as not even having a legitimate PvP aspect to it's game to be considered here is just ludicrous.

I mean really, do any of these other games have international televised ESL / MLG tournaments? Is that not something concrete that WoW has been able to achieve for the mmorpg genre, or that would atleast, you know, maybe lead you to consider they take PvP seriously in the game? Even if the PvP gameplay were absolutely atrocious, it warrants recognition.

Which of course, isn't true for WoW's gameplay at all, as I really think WoW's shining gem is it's spectacular battle system, with fluid movement and terrain interaction, massive amounts of original abilities, and an overall superb level of control of one's character, that in my opinion come together to create a rock solid PvP system.

I've gotta go with Daoc - Mordred Server.

Too bad the server is dead!

Lineage 2 beats everything you got listed.

LOL! The terrain you're on doesn't effect combat at all in WoW!  You can hit someone whose behind a tree with your spells, and the combat isn't fluid at all!  It's just a button mashfest where you spam your abilities.

DAoC. While some people prefer to play solo sports, far more people prefer team sports. Same thing with PvP.

Definitely DAOC Mordred/Andred servers... you had your PK's and PKK's was a great run for a while until people start parking their buff bots all over the place. Really good one on one fights much smaller skirmishes than todays Zerg fests... Noone does anything in a PVP game today unless they are escorted by 20 firends, really sad thing.

Someone really needs to make another 3 faction PVP game.

Coming in at a close second would be Shadowbane, this game needs a remake... Great player controled game, again with smaller skirmishes and decen't 1 on 1's when you weren't sieging or defending.

I did love classic UO, there was nothing funnier then yelling "guards" as you entered town and having them dogpile on your enemy. Long live Corp Por!

    What are your other Hobbies?

Gaming is Dirt Cheap compared to this...

I didn't vote because I really hate what WoW pvp has devolved into, but I really enjoyed WoW PvP when the honor system was first introduced, before the instanced Battlegrounds (level 60). I could log in at Tarren Mill and just bash skulls for hours and hours. And people actually grouped up together to push the Alliance back to Southshore. Endless, open, fun; PvP for the sake of PvP; no item rewards. Besides that, I think most MMORPG PvP is very lame. Most are just item treadmills and severely imbalanced classes. If I want great PvP, I will just play FPS like Team Fortress 2 or Call Of Duty.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

Yes, in the 5 year old zones, you can shoot spells through trees. Guess what, no serious PvP ever happens there, so it's of no consequence. WoW isn't the kind of game where people run around through the world they inhabit and slay random enemies they encounter upon during there adventures. In the distant past it may have been, but that's just not the aim or objective of PvP anymore. It's all about instanced small scale PvP battles where micromanagement of skills and communication come into play.

In the arenas, and battlegrounds, you can't cast through objects. It sucks that blizzard herds you into these instanced settings, if large scale PvP is what you're after, because you'll seldom find it here, but you will find dynamic terrain.

I mean look at arena a little harder. There are line of sight objects abound, more affectionately called "pillars" in arena that you need to use as defensive barriers against your opponent if you even want to break the mediocre ratings in the ladder system. This is terrain that needs to be exploited to succeed in PvP, is it not?

And on the game being a mashfest. The game has been more "zergy" since WotLK diverted PvP away from long mana wars, which I lament as I enjoyed the longer battles, but to say it's currently a button mashfest is a misnomer, though I understand where a lot of people are coming from with this complaint. That is, most new players will get a new 80, desire to try out PvP in their Northrend quest greens, and yes, most classes will be able to kill you in a handful of globals from the shear gear margin alone. And it sucks farming gear, but once you have a decent PvP armor, the game becomes a lot less bursty. The problem is most people quit before they can even obtain the tools they need to have in order to compete, which irritates a large playerbase, especially in an MMO that focuses on instant gratification. You won't be instantly gratified with PvP here, you actually need to invest time on homing your character first. But guess what, there are still hundreds of thousands of players who have done the grind and have relatively the same gear, and find ways of beating each other despite that fact. Perhaps dare I say it, there is skill involved?! In a game that requires  players to bind upwards of 50 keys? NO WAY?

Honestly though, I think the biggest problem is that they made communication integral to PvP survival in an MMO that centers itself on casual solo experience. You're really at the mercy of your teamate's capacity to know when to stop doing damage, and peel targets off of you. Or your teamate's capacity to know when healing simply isn't enough, and when he has to burn a big defensive cooldown to keep you alive like Pain Suppression. But these same things that make the arena system casual harsh really translate well to strong ventrilo communication dependant eSport PvP.

I really liked Shadowbane. There was just something unique about having player cities, castles, capitals to fight over. I remember taking a couple months break once and I logged back in to what was originally a spectacularly large city and was now just a heap of ruins.

Not sure if this was a jab at FFA pvp but if you think we fight solo in EVE Online think again. I've been apart of hundreds vs hundreds battles regularly and unlike DAoC my game isn't some old dying (dead) game that I have to look back on with rose colored glasses.

My game is still alive and kicking thank you very much
