Some questions about Darkfall

NirvanaXNirvanaX Member UncommonPosts: 8

I'm considering buying the game (NA Server), but I have some questions concerning the game.

What are the kind of quests I will find in the game.

About how many quests are in-game?

Do Darkfall as any "instances"/donjons (like in WoW, everquest1-2, aoc, etc)?

How big is the World (compare to other MMO, like Everquest 2, WoW)?

Are the "zones" have different themes or everything look the same?

Any healing skills (so I can create a healer type character)?

if you got any other info please share.

Also if you got any cool screenshots please show them.

The quests start off with kill 4 goblins and then get into the crafting system, eventually later on after a few hours the lore quests start up.

How many quests? Not like everquest, but there are enough for a PVP game. There hard to complete because of constant pk interfearence.

    There are no instances/zones.

    map size compared to WOW

All zones are different (alfar is depressing and scary, elf is quite cozy and beautiful, mahirim is tribelands with vast plains etc)

You can heal AOE people, mounts etc but its FPS so its not gonna be as effective as WOW healing where it targets for you.

Don't know if this is a troll or not but
    1) DF is a PvP centric sandbox MMORPG
    2) There are no instances
    3) Each racial area looks different
    4) There's about over 250 quest in game (not all can be done by 1 person) and they are pretty much standard MMORPG fan fare
    5) The world is huge. Just the land mass (not including the ocea) is appox 1100KM^2 and it can take hours walking from one end of the main continent to the other
    6) There are healing spells, but if you make a healing type character you will be schooled, but you can help out allies immensely by casting healing spells
    7) The game uses FPS combat mechanics, it has friendly fire, and most spells have AoE dmg
    8) While there aren't any instances there are dungeons. The dungeons are classic dungeon crawling where you enter a portal and crawl/fight/run to the another portal to get out. Dungeons aren't about fighting hard bosses (DFO doesn't have "bosses") its used to find treasure chest that require a key to open which contains good loot.

The game's bad rep is caused by a combination of issues

    1) People thought they'd like an FFA PvP game, but once inside the game they got ganked while questing or learning the game 10x in a row and quit thinkng the game is fail.

    2) People assumed that this game was the second coming of UO. It is not, and never was meant to be. Its closer to a Shadow Bane 2

    3) People lost their cities and raged quit blaming the game for their inedptness

    4) Various legitmate complaints such as hackers (still a probelm since its a PvP game) the grind (has been lowered a lot since launch), and lack of PvE options (again taken care of since launch with the addition of player housing and title quest), and crafting not serving a purpose (it does, but most people are in clan and most clan/alliances are self sufficent thus closing the market to resouces only). That said, the game could use more polish.

A note on city and player housing. Its all pre constucted. What I mean is you can't desing your own house or city, but claim ones that already exist and add on to. The places for towers, building, walls, etc are static and pre determined by the location. It sucks, but also understandable since they have to be limited and prevent exploitation and saving server resouces. Still a lot of fun to cature cities and build them though, just not enough customization :(

If you are thinking of getting Darkfall, then first consider thje fact its a FFAPvP MMO. Its NOT WoW, or anything similar you have tryed before.

And if that is ok, then you will bee in for a wild ride like no other MMO can deliver right now : )

If you'll check out the replies there to answers 1 through 3, you'll see a common viewpoint from the hardcore fans of DF, ie, the game can't possibly be the problem, it's the players fault if they do not like it. And if you'll spend some time over at the Offical forums, you'll get a feel for the folks that you'd be playing with. It isn't pretty, but hey, it's a PvP based game.

The game earned it's bad reputation, it was released in a beta state ( although the last patch has pushed to release stage ) and their was an incredible amount of content promised for the game which wasn't provided, and that in itself drove legions of players away.

Just lately the game has gone through a period in which it was indicated that the NA servers were going to be handled by a North American publisher, hence the additional cost for a transfer to those servers. It in fact appears that AV is acting as its own publisher, hence it's actually "double dipping" for charges to its customers that want the transer to the NA server from the Euro server, and that sat poorly with many, many, players ( you can certainly find threads here about that subject in depth )

Play the game for what it is - basically a fantasy setting counterstrike, and you'll be content.

And spend some time reading the threads, they can be very revealing.

well you can always read the blogs the dude with the dragonball name wrote(cant remember his name :P )they are very helpfull about the game, after you read them consider that those blogs are like 2 to 3 months old and think that the game that you are going to buy is not the exact game the haters bash, most of the haters bash the beta launch of the game and the exploiting, you my friend IF you like the kind of game tha DFO is then can be considered lucky because you will play a more polished game(clearly not finished yet :P )than the game that haters bash :P

also about the "no finished yet" it may not be finished yet but from the blogs and post that i have read some people are having fun with it :P

(i havent played the game yet only a bit in beta, ill wait a bit more till ill start it  not because i dont like it,but because i was introduced in mmos from wow which means that my standards are from a game that was already out f 3 years when i started it :P )

Well, really the fist thing first is to be very careful about any reply on this board, as the most vocal critics are not those who actually play the game, understand the impact on the game from the many patches, and have much of a clue about the current state of the game.

Unless $50 is a huge investment for you; if you think you'd enjoy a PvP-centric game where game code is less limiting on what you can do than in 99% of other MMO's, where you can participate in building cities, capturing and defending them, and the myriad of aspects to the game you can read about at the official forums, you'd be wise to try it.

    Good luck -CC

Including the one above...there are those that will tell you how bad the game is til they're blue in the face but there are also those that will tell you that the game is the greatest until everyone else is blue in the face.

Paranoia and zealotry rule here.  The rest of us just come to watch and throw popcorn.

edit: my typing stinks at this time in the morning.

So at the end of the day, you are asking us to ignore fact that DF is the worst and yet most expensive game and go ahead and pay for it.

You think I am that stupid?

$50 is peanuts money, but the list of options to spend $50 on is endless.  DF?  Never on that list.  By the time I go down to item 6 or 7 on my list, I am ready to head to bed for the day.  DF can wait.  Oh no, I forgot.  They cannot wait.  They are bankrupt and trying all means of viral marketing to scam a few more subs here and there.  Or they will go down.

With the exception of describing DF as a sandbox ( it in fact more closely resembles a persistant FPS ) I would say that Xphiher gave an accurate description of the game with no spin.

My hats off to him, and trolling him when he's taken the time and effort to post an accurate reply was classless.

Sandbox is a broad term which is why I'll clarify. Sandbox MMOs are games that don't have completly linerar progression where you can pretty much do everything in the game as soon as you log in for the first time. That describes DFO. Simulators on the other hand are games that try to mimick real life limitations in order to create roles for people to play in the world and are also sandbox. All simulators are sandbox games but not all sandbox games are simulators. SWG and UO were simulator games where as SB and DFO are just PvP centric sandbox games. EvE is nearly a simulator. The only thing its missing is character exploration out side ships which is being added.
