World of Warcraft is the first MMORPG I have played, I've been playing it for a bit less than a year. I've got a couple of level 80s, both probably geared for raiding, and a couple of level 70s. I'm bored with levelling characters, 5-mans and trying to PuG raids (which normally ends in failure) and I want to push to the end-game - and the end game in WoW is either Arena (which doesn't interest me much) or raiding instances (Ulduar currently) with a guild.
Now I do enjoy instances quite a bit, but the more I look into trying to join a raiding guild (and they are not easy to get into to) the more reluctant I get. If you want to be a "core" member of a raiding guild you have to commit to something 15 hours a week raiding - or probably more. Then you have to commit to grinding enough gold to pay for things like repairs, flasks and overpriced top-tier gear enchants. This would almost be like having to commit to a full time job.
I think I'm about ready to quit WoW, maybe give RL a go (LOL), maybe try another MMORPG which doesn't require such a huge time investment to get to the end-game (or are they all like that?)
Comments
A lot of casual raiding guilds only require 9-12 or so hours per week for raiding. For instance the one I am in does 3 hours, 3 nights a week during peak hours. It's really not that hard to commit to, and while it's not hardcore, if you get into the right guild the progression is still decent. You will likely have to get at least one 80 tier 7.5 geared to be considered in many cases if the guild is raiding Ulduar 25-man. As for the cost of raiding, a day or two of daily quests (400-500 gold) is usually enough to keep me going for a couple weeks at least. It gets even less expensive if you have a character or three that can farm mats and make flasks, food, and whatever else you need. Not to mention most guilds will help you with gear enchants, gems and such... The bottom line I guess is just to find a raiding guild that fits your schedule and needs...

sadly you wont really find any mmo that has easy access end game that is pve. pvp is easy to get into.
sounds like you should take a break. i quit WoW myself...... raiding lost its appeal (to me) when the first x-pac came out and they nerfed raid size. Then everything became handouts for "trying" instead of gear earned by doing.
So i sit and wait for something epic to come around. Mortal Online looks like it may be my huckleberry. i might even give aion some face time until MO comes out.
I quit WoW a year ago due to boredom after lvl 30 (and the rage of hearing another elf and a humanoid race instead of other races added). Right now I'm playing Guild Wars until a good fantasy MMO comes out. Several main issues concerned me on WoW until I got bored:
1> lack of unique races. Nothing hurts me more than a fantasy game that has beautiful centaur/dryad/etc NPCs, and NO PC races like them.
2> Lack of good quests. After a time, certain quests are either too high a level, or require more PCs to join into the fray. If it's so hard, make NPC members available (ala Guild Wars).
3> Coinage spent on menial things. Either give us coin for paying a monthly fee (like Second Life), or make the armor durable.
4> PVP. I abhore PVP (even in Guild Wars) due to bad experiences in such, and don't wish to participate on an RP server. Therefore, drop PVP on RP servers.
Right now, number 1 is high on my list, and would love to hear of any 3D MMO (not 2D, or 2.5D) that actually has taurs/dryads/naga as PC races. Enough with the humans!

how is this even an issue?
Since you know there are 4 server types
Normal (PvE)
PvP
RP/Normal (PvE)
RP/PvP
Or are you saying you want them to do away with them just because you don't like them?
cause that would be just self centered nonsense if that is what you meant.

When I played it, the RP servers were barely any different from the PvP, only instead of all-out war, you had the duel system. I got sick of having 10-20 challenges upon login. I just want a true seperation of PvP, maybe just a simple option to auto-disallow duels. It can be a nightmare when grinding.

I am not sure if automatically declining duels is one of the default options or not, but the thing with WoW is all the community developed AddOns. I would be surprised if there were not a "Auto-decline Duels" type of AddOn.

Yes there is an auto-decline duel addon
To the OP. Raidnig guilds differ in how hardcore they are. I am in a very casual raiding guild. We run raids every Sat night and sometime Sunday afternoon and thats it. Progression is slower but easier hit on the RL. I suggest you keep your eyes open for a more casual guild.
NB - Casual guilds may progress too slow for you. If so then you are stuck with game requirements that are more hardcore than your life permits and then it would be time to change games.
I've been playing wow for a while, and when even maxed out I can't see how your bored. I always play to be number one, if I fail, I keep trying, it's boring sometimes, but when you have friends, it's really never boring, if you quit WoW where will you go? Conan.....?
Original poster, you really need to try other free-to-play (f2p) mmorpgs and trial versions to get a better sense of the value of a mmorpg, sinse WoW has lost it’s luster with many. Whether your into PvP or PvE or a combination, there are several f2p and trial option mmo’s that will give you some entertainment value without spending money, and you can quickly improve your impressions on mmorpg’s by doing so.
WoW has not evolved, but remained stagnant as a very rudimentary PvE game and a very boring and value-less PvP for those that like it as a smartly implemented option. Doing the same raids again and again was just as less appealing as doing the same scenarios again and again for me with the game WAR.
4 years ago, I had a lot of interest in WoW, but after 6-months to a year, after repeatedly doing the same events/raids/smashing the same keyboard numbers again and again, and without progressive breadth and depth of game-play on the back-bone of mediocre graphics, and again, in addition to the very static style of game-play, it became a dis-interest of mine.
My problem with WoW is two fold. First, while it was great to occupy my time while I was in college on a night off, or at times an entire day off, that is not the case now that I am part of the real world. 3-4 hours of devout attention to a game to participate in a raid every night for the chance to get gear is not something that someone with a job, a family, and a normal sleep pattern can manage. I can put in maybe 40 minutes a night to gaming on the weekdays, and while gaming is something I love to do, there's not much that WoW can offer for meaningful progression in 40 minutes.
My second issue is that with the design of the game, and the direction I see most MMO's going. The players that support this type of game structure refer to it as "skill", but my label for it is more on the order of "reflex". Pressing the wrong button at the wrong time can often result in wiping a raid. Human reflex response peaks at around age 14, and slowly decays thereafter. I'm 25 now, and unless I spend every waking minute toning my reflex response and hand-eye coordination, there is no way I will be as nimble and responsive as I was at 14; this is why I quit playing FPS games. My ideal MMO, and probably the ideal MMO for a lot of gamers approaching their 30's or older, is one that focuses more on strategy and less on reflex. I want to spend time building my character, selecting how to itemize my gear, and planning my combat technique, and not copying the cookie-cutter template of the "best guy on the server", blindly throwing on all the "shaman gear" that has the highest item level, and training myself to mash specific keys in specific circumstances on reflex alone. I want to have to choose between a shield that offers frost resist or fire resist for a specific fight, not have to mash frost resist totem at the correct time.
Wow is too action-ish for my liking, and while it has provided a fun experience, I'm more in the market for a game that I can chill out and play for a half hour after work, still make meaningful progression in, and maybe actually get the chance to relax while playing instead of hypervigilantly hovering over the "heal" button while staring at the main tank's health bar unblinking.
Dude, first you are doing it wrong. In less than a year you already have a couple of 80s and 70s toon??!! You should focus on your main toon!
Having multiple toons dosent means you will be good at raiding.
Get the fraction up with wymest, hodir ect... those fraction provide good gears and enchants for a start. Which to raiding guild its the basic that you must have. Dailies and your profession will provide you wil enough gold for repair and pots.
Than tried to pug for full Naxx gear, i know its sux to pug, but in order to go into a seriuos raiding guild, you must have it.
Next is to build up your achievements, some guild looking at at least 3k plus.
Read up on the instances before you go in and bring along the necessary pots etc... before you raid..
Than once you have all those, read thru your realm forum for most of them will recruit there, and apply thru it...
If you are serious in raiding, than stop the re-rolling mate, and spend more time with your main, and you will do just fine..
Good luck...

Yeah you are right I will do this from now on.
Could not have said it better myself. While I have played everything from zMUD's to Original EQ to WoW, I am beginning to think my time with this genre of MMOs is over. I have spent many many hours keeping pace with the hardcore "players" and I think it may be the end of the road for me as most of these people aren't event out of high school yet. I will be 28 in a couple of weeks and although the past 12 years of MMOs has been an integral part of my life, I need a slower paced game to occupy my mind and minimal free time. After all I met my wife (of 4 years) because we had a common interest while in college (Everquest) so it hasnt been all bad. So any suggestions on a nice f2p slow MMO for an "old guy?"
Personally I'm in the same boat - at the very least, I have played about all of the current options and either don't like them enough to continue or have played and burned out. Right now I am playing Wizard 101 - it's a kid oriented game but just the right speed for me - free to play for a while, and you can spend a minimal amount of money to "activate" new areas of the game. Refreshing card-based combat system, and just very light and breezy overall, so you don't have to worry about anything except building your deck, making friends, fighting, and decorating your house if you like. I've been liking it a surprising amount.
Burned out myself on WoW. Currently taking a break after my main had done everything (except Ulduar) and got most gear untill then. Was trying to get some old raid factions up and do some heroic's TBC and a couple of missing Heroic Wotlk-(Oculus and old kingdom) but absolutly nobody is interested getting up the factions, not even doing Oculus or old kingdom either (too hard was the main complaint i got for those 2), as for the rest i just got whats the popint, its pointless gaining old reputations up. So nobody can be assed to do anything but all complain vigorusly about being bored and that theres nothing to do? Am i missing something here?
Then you have that other implemented feature of doing all those (aww fucks sake forgot what they are classed as) but do all reputations/fixed number of quests in each zone, visit this that and other, visit barbers etc etc etc. You are awarded points for doing them, some cases a title, other case's a mount (these are removed after a while so only the hardest of hardcore people get them). Whatever the word is, again most of doing that is utterly pointless, an implemented feature that was ment to be improved but has just been left to rot. Players lack of interest to do them too now because of this (me i was trying but you need a grp to do them and raid grps to do the ones inside raid instances) but not many are interested.
After a while i gave up, spent my last 2 months doing a shoutout in gameworld+LFG channel+guildchannel+trade channel without any success, found myself logging in doing the daily quests, hanging around for a couple hrs doing sweet FA logging out, rince and repeat till my accoutn ran out. Bought AoC, went and gave that a try, PvP servers = a joke and pointless (unless you like getting jumped on by 5+ players and unable to do anything at all, after finally managing to get off the newbie island you get jumped by lvl 50's all the time. = deleted character go to PvE server but LOL lack of players = quest alone = boring game = gametime ran out and so did i. Paid for 1 more month of wow and immeditelly found myself logging in, do the daily quests log out till following day, rince and repeat (yup didnt bother sticking around for hrs doing LFG shout outs, knew nothing would happen so why bother, just do the LFG shouts when doing daily quests) got bored, didnt renew (after over 3yrs of playing. Got lotro, been there last 3 mths, community is great (piss's on all other gaming community's i have experianced by a long way). Game may not be as polished and other things but it certainly aint bad.
At least lvl 60's cannot solo some mobs and can no way do lvl 30 instance's alone or even some lvl 30 quests, hell it still takes 4 or more to do them (Unlike other games i can mention were it only takes 1 to walk through it when 95% asleep).
I quit WoW about 2 months ago, had several level 80s and 70s. I found myself logging into the game and just standing there with nothing interesting to do. So after about a week or 2 of logging in, standing there for 5 minutes, logging back out, I realised my time with WoW is over.
One thing that really bothered me with the game was the community... coming from a 5 year period of FFXI to WoW the community was just horrid compared to it. Needless to say I really don't like the direction the MMO world is going, every aspect of newer generation MMOs primary focus seems to be on PvP and zero strategic play. My personal experiences have been that any game revovling around PvP seems to have a rotten spirited community base with little friendly-ness.
Now that I have no MMORPG to currently play I am probably just going to play the Aion betas until Final Fantasy XIV comes out (not going to buy Aion, will be out of college in a month and don't have time for an MMO while looking for a job and getting married). If FFXIV bombs then I probably won't be playing MMOs for many years. The last interview stated that the game is going to be strictly released in PvE with no PvP at launch (yay good community incoming). But yeah if it bombs I won't play another PvP oriented MMO based on community factors and it will be a looong time if any at all that there will be a PvE strictly based MMO (big titles).
Depends what you want, if you just want to raid then you are going to need to commit the time required to do it, regardless of what MMO you play.
If you don't mind doing the odd other thing then there are plenty of casual raiding guilds out there, in WoW and other MMOs.
If you are looking for an alternative though, you could try LOTRO or EQ2, similiar setup to WoW, but LOTRO is a slower pace and more casual, EQ2 is faster and has more variation in the content (raids are more fun too imo).
This is exactly the reason I've been advocating for a character development strategy MMOG that has everyone advancing at roughly the same rate 24/7 (later joiners get a catch-up rate) with infinite linear and lateral development that isn't attached to a specific end-game or playstyle.
You've nailed another reason why a lot of us don't care to be in games where your role in a group must be played with reflex efficiency. I'm 50. There are a LOT of us older players that would LOVE an MMOG that didn't require massive amounts of online time to compete/advance in.
Actually, the interface was not actiony enough. The best action interface I remember was City of Heroes. Action-based MMOs are what I want, as I want normal RPGs to go that route. However, with the right interface there is a way to strategize in action-based MMOs.

I left WOW for all the reasons you said, plus when you look at it, the entire game is really so shallow, and repetitive. I started playing Darkfall a few weeks after it came out and I can't see myself playing anything else for a LONG time. Darkfall is so different to WOW, it's like the anti-WOW: full friendly-fire, no safe zones where you can't be attacked, and you drop all your loot when you die. Unlike WOW, loot and gear have nothing to do with progression, as you lose it all when you die, and in Darkfall, you don't need to level or do raids or anything - you just join a clan (guild) and do PVE, PVP or siege other people's cities as you like. Also the game doesn't hold your hand and funnel you through the exact same content path as everyone else on the server, it is a "sandbox".

It is a little old but is a good intro to how the game is.
I played WoW for 3 years then left it a year ago. Main reason I left: it required no thought.
I discovered this while in Gruuls Lair as a Warlock, I was experiencing major latency (15000 - 20000ms) and as a result the game was only updating once every 20seconds... despite this I knew which buttons to press and where to walk so just keyed the buttons in the order required. I got one of the top dps and rather than being glad I was quite dissapointed as I should have got bottom.
Since then I been seeking a more thought provoking game with strategy and changing situations, such occurs in life... I do not play games because I am a programmed entity, I play for the human emotion of fun.
Yes, looking back it was like the perfect scam; a game that starts fun but steadily devolves into a mindless repetition of cut'n'paste content: a second job you have to pay for. Yes I am still bitter about it.
This is not true. 15 hours a week is huge overstatement. Also, if you are in a raiding guild most of the time they help with flasks and enchants. Also, I'd be interested to see how close to raid ready your characters are. There are a lot of raids that can be easily PUG'd for some raid epics.
