PvP? Ballista?

SoulSurferSoulSurfer Member UncommonPosts: 1,024

I hope they have a new form of ballista pvp that gets integrated somehow into this game.  I really liked ballista in ffxi, (despite its unbalanced classes)  but it was an afterthought and only had a small niche following.  - fun none-the-less

I wonder if the decision to stop expanding Ballista was made because it was serving too few people in FFXI.

I knew a lot of players in my server that spent a lot of their time doing Ballista, and I thought having the cross-server tournament was a great idea. I don't know what it was that made the tournament a one time thing for regions, but I'm sure lots more would have participated if the developers increased rewards.

yeah, I think it was somthing like less than 1% of total participation on all servers that played.

Funny though, I was able to keep playing with that 1% for 6 years. lol

I think not many people did ballista because it was not conveniently available, it followed a very odd schedule that was difficult to follow and not everybody could attend the given times.. If they made Ballista accessible all day through either maybe a queue , etc...  then  I have a feeling a lot more people would of participated and if SE saw that increase in participation they might of expanded a lot more on the PVP of FFXI.

It would be nice to have something like the Battle ground instances in WoW for a Ballista type game. Also how about a reward. The only rewarding thing from ballista was really a title and some weekly prestiege of being on top of a list. That really isn't that much of a big thing, expaically with the crowd with FFXI that will only do missions at the end when the final rewards are released. Something that is a past time that you are easily able to jump in and out of would be great. Ballista, Panktron,  tetramaster ... they were all thing that were good past times in theory, but you were so far removed from what was going on that it seems dumb to do becasue you could miss something big like a mission shot.

That being said ... maybe having some universal chat channels so people can see someone shouting for a member of a mission while they are playing one of these game or maybe farming. How many people just stood in Jeuno or Whitegate waiting for a shot for something just because they didn't want to miss it.

I really enjoyed Ballista and outside of the class imbalances, it was pretty fun.

I believe that the developers of FFXIV have a different view on PVP than other games such as WOW or WAR which have a focus on it.  The FFXI and FFXIV (most likely) experiences are geared towards fighting together to defeat the primary main objective (AKA ganking the NPC mob) and less on the struggle between races or factions (AKA other players).  Because everyone in the world is supposedly working together, it is hard to incorperate PVP without creating conflict.

Personally, I believe an instanced battle ground would be an amazing addition to FFXIV.  FFXI's battle grounds are, as stated above, too controlled by time and requirements to even make participating worth while (not to mention lack of rewards).

On the other hand, balancing the PVP becomes another major issue.  WOW suffers from trying to balance PVE and PVP at the same time which leads to rapid changes in the classes over a short period of time.  I don't know if I would want to see FFXIV do that...

But I believe even a simple "Duel" option outside of town or in certain areas would suffice for a while.  Or maybe even a bigger "Party VS Party" option... lol I could just imagine how parties would solve camping issues...

I agree. I'm not sure I'd want the focus that PvP has in Warhammer Online, but the instanced scenario type functionality could add a fun twist to the game.

After playing FFXI for years, I initially thought the idea of PvP in WoW was pretty useless. You had to wait around for a BG, and the few BGs I played in were horrible (due to players, not game design).

In Warhammer, though, I've actually grown to love PvP. It presents a new level of challenge, because you never know what a player's going to do, as opposed to PvE where the mobs act in a pretty predictable fashion. PvP, when done correctly, makes you think fast, respond faster, and consider all the different ways an engagement can turn out.

And literally fighting for camp... lol oh that could be interesting!

I played WAR for about 7 months after release.  It was a lot of fun, helluva lotta fun.  But it got old quick, and when we started to experience end game content it was not fun anymore, so I threw in the towel at that time.  It just got too repetetive and boring, and I wasn't really ready to put up with massive end game bull$h!t and drama.  I'm over it.

I'm not asking ffiv to be like WAR, just have more ample times for people who want to enter a "BG" type pvp battleground for something extra to do, while killing downtime for whatever reasons...

btw, any other Final Fantasy fans gonna try out Aion???

Nope, already was in several beta sessions and its yet again another quest-driven POS, and the community was insipidly horrible.  I'm playing FFXI now with the LS I created for FFXIV... about 20+ of us now, and our goal is too finish all the storylines of each expansion before XIV launches!

So far we're loving being back, the community is incredible as ever, and the changes made to XI over the years we've been gone are amazing!

lol POS is actually unneeded.  I agree Aion is nothing revolutionary, but I was not expecting revolutionary.  I will play Aion and see all that the game has to offer before I make up my mind.  After all, if I quit FFXI after only playing it for 1 year, I wouldn't have become addicted to it.  FFXI is great that way, some will learn to look at things with a patient eye before jumping to conclusions.
