Game had about 10.5 K hours logged in Xfire yesterday. First time it has broken 10 K in a long time. At least people are taking advantage of the free look and see. I don't think I will be resubbing but I am sure some will. It was nice to take a third look at least.

I wouldn't call people using free time "working". Offer anything for free and you'll get plenty of people who will examine it out of curiosity. Expect those numbers to drop like a stone once the trial ends.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

I'm giving it a try again, only because I have nothing else to play right now. I won't be re-subbing though, the quest style isn't my thing; plus there's the fact that they still didn't get gems right the 3rd time round. I will say that I do love the graphics and the atmosphere of the game, just the other things kill it for me.
The game is pretty decent now.
I'm personally filing it in the "will play until Champions Online comes out unless CO has a Cash Shop in which case will play until The Old Republic comes out."
Not the best category mind you, but better than the previous category I had it listed in which was "avoid like the black death".
But Funcom is definitely taking their veteran campaign seriously. They've shut down free trials indefinitely because they want their vets to have the best possible experience should they choose to return. Now if I can only get my DX10 client to stop casting slithering shadows all over the place.
That's disingenuous at best, blanket stupid at worst.
Funcom has been offering a Free Trial to EVERYONE for about a month now. They have since CLOSED that Free Trial and the numbers have gone UP as the OP posted.
It's "working" bottom line.

At least you can get your DX10 version to work :P my game crashes when I try DX10, something to do with Windows 7 I believe.

My client has been more stable int DX10 than it was in DX9 using Win7 64 bit, so go figure. When the game would not launch for me at all I was reading the tech forums and some guy had posted his game would run in DX10 but not DX9. I guess stuff like that happens when you have to have 2 separate clients.
Anyway like a earlier poster mentioned , it is nice the veterans are retrying, but I guess we will find out how many stick with it in a couple of weeks.

It was always going to bring a huge number of people when you give 700k people a free couple of weeks.
The questions are xfire suggests something like 30k people (extreamly rough number of course) have taken up the free time is getting 4 or 5% of the people you lost back with this a success or not? (I'm not infering anything by this, I honestly don't know if thats good or bad).
How much money has it cost them if these new people used 300TB of bandwith downloading the client and patching? How much money has the large increase in advertiseing cost them.
Then of course the biggest question is what percentage of these people will resubscribe and will they do it long term or are they just filling a gap till aion.
Is this a 1 shot deal or not? if you do this again in 3 months time will it bring in 4 or 5% of the people you lost again? or substantially lower?
xfire in say 3 weeks time should answer a couple of these questions.
Like others have said, "free time" can't be considered working. Let's review this topic 31 days AFTER the 15 day free welcome back is over. Then we'll have a better idea of how many concurrent subscribers stuck around.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."
"This free re-evaluation offer is only valid until 2009-07-22."
And as I got this message only six days ago, I would say there are quite a few still playing on borrowed time.
Maybe do some fact checking before deciding to fanboy up.

two other indicators that its working is alexa.com which shows a peak way above the peak from patch 1.05 in forum traffic.

Also, more than 97.500 active PVP players last 30 days in Yellow gremlin database.

but thanks for the offer i guess?
Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.
I don't really trust xfire as a true measure of anything except how many xfire players are playing what game. Big difference ... HUGE difference between xfire players and plyaers in general.
To me, the true test of AoC's gambit will be if they have to create any more servers for people to play on. New servers mean population increases. No new servers mean stagnation or at best, slight increases from time to time. I hope they, as well as every other game does well. We need all the good games we can get to keep the genre alive and kicking.
I agree with this. I have noted that every zone has multiple instances, which is excellent. Tortage is always full, levels 50+ is full and Raid zones have people standing in lines getting into raids on a regular basis. My guild has already been in two sieges as well.
As to the Xfire numbers, of note is that WAR and LOTRO also had returns going on. WAR jumped 3 spots in Xfire during that period. LOTRO jumped 4 spots. AoC? 10 SPOTS.
Too bad global is full of idiots, but hey, what can we expect...the hate regime still moves forward like a well oiled machine. When the two weeks are up and the dust clears, I KNOW the game will be doing considerably better for Funcom and the community can get back to normal (which by the way, is a GREAT community when this stuff is not going on)
Cheers
I started playing again. Although I played for the first week of the game then stopped when it was released.
Started a new Conq on thursday night didn't get to play much then. But got to play a decent amount over the weekend. Currently sitting at level 20 and just got out of Tortage.
So far I'm liking the game. It's a good change of pace from WoW.
I'm actually thinking I might sub for a month or 2. Hoping I can get to know some people in the game so I have more people to talk to.
As far as people's comments about filler games till Champions Online comes out. I'm in the beta. I wouldn't hold my breath... City of Heroes is better IMHO..
Edit: Look at that joined almost 3 years ago and this is my first post!
Welcome, and a good first post.
I think people will continue to have alternate opinions of the game. What I DO see is less of the hatred though than has been prevalent in this forum, as Funcom really made an effort, and for that I am glad.
I have quite a few characters going, with an 80, a 60, a 47 and a new level 23 that is paired up with my wife and my son. We are having a blast, and the game offers what I want..
That is what matters the most!

I think that you have hit the point. You play the games that you have fun in. I have fun when playing AoC. I refuse to play games that feel more like a second job.
I played trial for this game before and now that I won the free copy I came back to the game, and by every hour I am liking it more and more. In my opinion there is no more fascinating MMO out in the market at the moment. Some of the places in AoC take my breath away. I will sub for the next month but then I am not sure since I don't stay at games for too long. Experience it 1 time and it is well worth it.
/Agreed. I have played games before that just became a chore. In Age of Conan I can jump in, have fun, and jump back out when RL calls
"nerf rock, paper is working as intended."
- Scissors.
Head Chop
The NEW free trial is for Veterans (IE people that bought the game a while ago). The older free trial was for EVERYONE. Hell it was running here on MMORPG are you blind to have missed it? It was literally plastered everywhere.
Either way, the older free trial has been closed down so the vets can get a better homecoming.
And here's your bloody link. I even bolded the important part for you, you know, so you don't get lost:
The re-evaluation offer is valid from July 8th to July 22nd and is available to anyone with a closed account in good standing. Reactivating at any time within this period will open for two weeks of free play regardless of when you choose to act within that time period. There are no costs associated with this offer or any subscription obligations. It is also important to note that the free trial campaign will temporarily be closed to ensure the best play environment for all returning players.

Maybe do some fact checking before deciding to hater up.
TLDR version: Funcom closed down it's free trial (open to everyone) for their re-evaluation campaign (open to about 700k people) and it's XFire numbers are STILL climbing. Take from that what you will.

I don't think LoTRO or WaR had the equivalent of a 1.05 patch either. I know if they had instigated the vet return campaign before 1.05 I would not have even bothered with the download.

I also think it's in part that LOTRO is just a GOOD game period. Ever since Moria launched the game has definitely seen a continued increase in activity and subs. Good for Turbine. I really hope they knock Rohan/Gondor/Mordor out of the park.

Well it also help that LOTRO had those life time packages, I have quite a few friends that play it from time to time because of it .. especially when they are between MMO's.
Its free so they will always have some player base, especially because whoever get really bored with LOTRO and do not come back will sell Life time subs account.

looks like there is another XFire contest going on also, started today

wait until that 14 day free trial is over. i didnt bother to wait till then to quit playing it. i just couldnt bring myself to go through it again.
I always wondered what was the motivation for someone using xfire.
