With natal and the ps3 motion control systems announced it seems inevitiable there will some form of mmorpg's with motion control in the future. It seems strange to imagine how it be would incorporated, but watching the e3 motion demo with the player pulling out out arrows and shooting skeletons all tracked with depth perception it opens up a new world in gaming imo.
Mmorpg's are a stubborn lot, and i expect a few replies saying it just wont work, there are too many buttons/moves to be incorporated for motion control to work. Also dungeon raids players might get tired hacking and slashing for a prolonged period of time. latency might also be an issue, especilally replicating real time fighting but internet speeds are always improving. Even so im sure there are minds at work on these problems. Gameplay would change for the most part you would physically do your attacks rather than press a button so there would be no need for toolbar with millions of buttons, walking forward would have to use some form of auto walk or button press but with depth perception i saw in ps3 demo limted movement of character could be tracked within a few feet.
The idea is both exciting and jarring, imagine playing a rouge you are stealthed requiring to be crouched and tracking player/npc instead of a button press you actually have to perform a backstab physically. Maybe theres a soft spot or gap in there armour, if you goof up and miss the player swings round and its your head they lop off. For ranger types you actually have to pull out arrow and load bow keep it steady and shoot, the further back you pull the more damage you do. Healing magical types would be waving their wands or casting their spells, there could be certain movements and timings neccesary for more dmg/healing. Motion control lends itself better to sci fi shooting genre, ducking and movement would be tracked, dfiferent weapon types would be have to be wielded appropiately and perhaps the controller/gun/zapper whatever they call it could have a good rumble feature so its not easy to shoot heavy machine guns and aim at the same time. Real time control of mounts/ships ,resource gathering ie mining would require real work, crafting a sword and materials over a kilm could be tracked, weapon would no longer be determined by button press but the keen eye and steady hand of the crafter. Imagine going to auction house and looking at the weapons for sale, the wonky and dull mishapen ones would be cheaper, and crafters could actually add decals with a brush feature and would be able to determine the cut and shape of the armour/clothes.
Perhaps getting a bit ahead of myself with all the customization and uniqe details would be difficult on hardwareand latency but these are always improving, the details could be less superficial and result in different stats. Rpg's have evolved from tabletop and dice rolls to the modern equivalent with thousand of players. computer mmorpg's havent killed off tabletop market and i think some people would still enjoy playing on computer, but the key for me is immersion and button pressing and the horrendous number crunching and stat sheet mentality in modern mmo's is a road block. Maybe some people dont like the idea of flailing around in front of a camera, but is sitting down for long periods of time pretending to do magic spells/shooting by pressing buttons and staring at screen more dignified? I see the shift in gaming culture to motion control as gradual the wii was a sucess, and soon the ps3 and natal, and by next generation of consoles nearly all games will have motion control. I think it comes down to this, would you rather sit down and press tab and press a button, or stand up and use your eyesight/ timing/body movement to shoot and hack your opponents.

All I'll say is this.
Can you imagine having to actually run in real life just to get to where you want to go? Like from one end of the world to the other?
Who's responsible for the medical bills when players drop dead from heart attacks?
Or the bloody nose my buddy just got because I pulled back my broadsword to swing just as he walked up?
This will answer all your questions:
I prefer a keyboard or a contorller, personally if i wanted excercise i would go out and buy a wii. I'm to lazy to act out most of what would be required. especialy trying to jump and swing back and fourth on a ledge I would fall off and die if i had to keep that pose for 10 minutes or so.

Great. So I'd not only look like a spasming dumbass in front of my friends and family at home in front of the monitor / tv, but also to thousands of people ingame as well?
No thanks.

I usually play MMOs when I return from the gym. Thus I need to rest and not strain myself further.
I can't see motion control being seriously used in MMOs until we get to virtual reality type deals. (because, for one, moving forward and back is already a difficult thing to emulate.)
Clearly if you look into the future motion control will eventually have a place in MMORPG's, but I think that is a while away yet.
Now there's a promising idea. Picture this:
A workout game. The ingame trainer is really hawt ( we're talking full motion video- real person-hawt ).
For every 100 pushups I can do, she takes off a piece of clothing.
When the trainer is fully naked, she's replaced with a new one.
No possible cheat codes just to get to the good stuff.
I'd look like friggin' Shwartzenegger in two weeks of non-stop training.
Treadmill.
Treadmill.
Well I did say difficult, not impossible. Still the treadmill would have to work 360 degrees first of all, and the problem is if you were to turn around 180 degrees you wouldn't be looking at your screen anymore, lol. And when you start proposing some odd system of the screen always being in front of you you may as well just start talking about it going all the way and into VR.
And really, that would look ridiculous, haha.

We're talking about people pretending to swing swords in their living room. How much more ridiculous can we really get?
Well you've got a point there, haha. At least you could hide that sort of though (don't do it when others are around), but I don't think you could hide all the equipment it'd take to make that work right . Having a huge ass 360 treadmill in your living room with a monitor that follows the direction of your head, yeah not going to hide that =P
True, but the bonus nerd-tech points awarded by people going "That's cool as hell, bro" evens it out a bit.

Can't do push-ups when your third leg is fully erect.
once people get over themselves the possibiltys are endless, but wether you like idea or not it will be here sooner or later traditonal controllers will be phased out as archaic. a game like planetside fps with stat tracking and some rpg elements cant be that far off. as the technology improves people will look less stupid, hand eye coordiantion and quick thinking will show up the goofs from the skillful players.

At this rate why dont we connect our cyber brains into the PC and play when we sleep?
best choice imo.

And the floor needs some holes drilled I guess ...
Yep, and Beta was going to win over VHS and Blu-ray would be a short fad before HD triumphed.
Truthfully, i'm at my best when I'm unconcious. All these damn thought processes get in my way when awake.

See? The game not only makes me healthier and happier, but I can check for termites at the same time. My productivity scale would be off the charts.
well if the technology is there to make the game more immersive then use it. something about lock on targeting and dice rolls always seemed a little dishonest and lazy to me first time i played an mmorpg having been a console player before but the mmo aspect kept me playing. games like wow are going down the route of just adding more specials and buttons, untill your screen is nothing but toolbars and your not playing a game but windows spreadsheet online. well integrated motion control will be like the jump from 2d to 3d games. at the moment its limited to mini games and small scale fps but the change cant come soon enough, it gives control back to the player rather than you being a spectator. Essentially honest gameplay will win out players wont be limited by keyboards and mice that they have so long become used to, the current crop of games will look like tiddlywinks compared to future mmo's.
Actually, many players would do well in moving a lot more. I have far too many friends who rarely even leave the house and get no exercise whatsoever.
Now you get that hearth attack for not moving at all while eating unhealthy food. I believe a player who have to move a lot will live longer than one who only sits on his butt most of his time.
it will be up to gamers if they want to continue to be 'bench wamers' or stand up and be active and have fun, old habits will die hard. but yeah you can burnt out to, the guy who invented the jogging craze in the 70's died while jogging at 52. games have become a feast for the eyes, but the gameplay has no balance, professions and classes are in a constant state of flux and overpowered or underpowered from one month to the next so every class/player can have their 5 minutes of fame and then be nerfed, games that last have clear rules and keep to them like chess, if the rules changed every few weeks people would stop playing it . with real time tracking of movement if i shoot someone or beat them in melle it will be down to my skill or their error, no arguments about fotm templates or nerfs and neither player will feel cheated from outcome.
We know this sort of technology works, and can make fun games. We're basically talking about doing the same sorts of things you do with the Wii rigth now, only you don't need the controllers in your hands.
Sure, there will at some point be some MMORPGs made using these sorts of controls. Obviously you could make a Wii controlled MMORPG right now, or use this new tech.
Will it be adopted any time soon so that it replaces mouse and keyboard? Probably not. We'll see some games like this, but the mouse and keyboard will remain for quite some time.
I don't think this tech will replace mouse and keyboard for shooters anytime soon either. You can take the mouse and point to a single pixel on the screen. I doubt that will be easy to do with this technology.
Also, people in mmorpgs still tend to type to communicate. Lots use voicechat, but lots don't care for it.
