Do not buy this game without a trial IMO. It is one of the worst experiences I ve had in a MMO. That said I m sure some like it. If you liked DAOC style pvp(best ever) then no you won t like it. If you enjoyed SB you might like it. If you like beating a stick with your oversized (and now glowy) stick, ya you might like it. Problem most people have that I talked to in game and who have quit, is they hate the whack-a-mole style of combat. You might need a new left mouse button after awhile
1st)read the paragus blogs, ofc the man is a DFO lover but atleast what you read is written downt to a fine detail, also he tells many bad sides of the game
2nd)take in mind that the last patch/expansion made the game better(at least thats what most people say)
3rd)dont ask anyone for a game since there are so many infos about it
4th)you can give it a go,if you stay hooked up with it for a month or something playing 2-3 hours per day or having a total of 70-80 hours of game before you get bored of it,then its worth its money to check it out,i know sigle players tha cost more and have like 30 hours of actual game play
now for a conclusion
IF you buy the game
the worst thing to happen is that you will lost some hours of you life and 50 bucks trying something new(the sandbox staff and all this and i say some hours because if you play a game and quit in the first hour then mmos arent for you)
the best thing to happen is that you will love it and find a good game for you to play in your spare time
OR
you will play it for a month and get bored like many people do with mmos
either way you dont have much to loose
the amount of money if you have a job is not much and you will spend it to try somehting
and its just a game its not the end of the world if you dont like it,we are people we cant all like the same things.
btw from what i have read about this game better be prepared with a lot of willpower because ganking is a moving stone in this game(since thats what drives that game)
and before you ask if i play,no i dont i will start in a month or two but no because i dont like the game there are other reasons for that
I think it boils down to what you want from the game.
If you just want some solid old-school PvP with full loot, epic battles with tons of people, FPS style figthing and mounted combat, it may be a very interesting game.
If you are looking for a complex game with many development options, tactical combat, deep crafting, involved econonomy, interesting PvE or a world that seems "live" and "real", you won't find it.
Long story short, DFO is marketed as a "Sandbox PvP Full Loot MMORPG", but its "Sandbox" aspect is EXTREMELY limited, while the rest is quite well developed.
I heard about Darkfall years ago, but never really followed it to be honest. It was only a few days ago I stumbled across it again on youtube, watching a guild called the Afghans' beating down on another guild called Death. The video did it for me. Read up as much as I could on it, along with all the warnings about how terrible the game is, and decided f**k it, opinions are like a**eholes after all, and went ahead and bought the game.
So after an easy enough torrent download, only took a few hours as there are around 100 seeders, and quick enough patching session, I went in expecting the worst. I think expecting the worse really helped, because, unlike a lot of people who have followed this for many years and felt let down because of their high expectations and hope for an instant success, I've actually come away with having a great experience, kind of like the first time I played SWG pre nge way back when. I've actually forgotten what it's like to go into an MMO and feel confused and so questioning, and paying attention to what quest givers say, as most mmo's these days, in my opinion, pretty much follow the same pattern; load up your tool bar, run in and spam the buttons till you level etc. Sure it doesn't have the glamorous company background that Blizzard quite does, as a matter of fact if you go look at the forums and every board regarding the game, it gets flamed left right and centre, but I can't be arsed with all that, like I said I never bothered following the company or forum.
But my experience so far has been mint. It's a brutal game, it's kind of like coming out of the mmo comfort area and into something a little bit more wild. The graphics aren't bad, I seem to have these little black outlines on everything that make the game look like a comic book which rocks, not sure if that's just my video card though but I love it. If you've played Ultima Online you'll feel comfortable with the system of looting and such. Loot everything, and bank with paranoia. All I can say is, if you go in there with what you've heard and read about it, and if you're not scared to venture out of the realms of most mmo's around at the moment, you'll come out with a killer time.
I subscribed to AoC and WoW, as well as this a few days after, and found myself cancelling AoC and WoW and sticking to this one. I wasn't there on EU launch, seeming as I'd forgotten Darkfall existed and have been mmo free for a good year or two now, so wouldn't have quite the same bitterness as the people who got the shit end of the stick back then. But that goes for a lot of mmo's, you rush to be the first in, and get an over buggy and unpolished experience, and it's us randomers who come to pick the bones that eventually fill it. But, with my first 2 days into this, I'm addicted, appeals to the sort of style I had from the first 2 mmos I played, UO and SWG, and I can't seem to get off of it. Just make sure you make a few friends to begin with if you decide to play. I don't think I've ever panicked in a beginner area before, the mobs are bloody hard to begin with, and there's always a chance someone's hiding under a rock to steal your loot; very rewarding. As for the company, who cares, I don't care if the bartender is embezzling all of the money from his pub, just so long as he serves me a decent enough pint while I'm there. Good luck.
*Right now I know that does look very biased but I'm only writing from my first 2 days in, playing only one race (no alts), so it's been written with my initial excitement, personal impressions, and player interactions. Sure there could be something to piss me off along the line, but so far so good.*

Actually, this is a fairly good write up of someone's first days in an MMO. Even though your post count is low, and, thus, people may discredit you on that, I find this a very feasible review. Good job.
I have only played a few hours on friends' accts (before they canceled) and putting all other issues aside, this is the single most grindtastic/intensive game I have considered playing. Worse than UO and SWG, worse than a few F2P Asian grinders I have tried. That alone was more than enough to turn me off, with all of the other failings of this title.

Thanks a lot junzo, just thought I'd throw in my two pennies. Sure there'll be a few people who'll rip it to pieces, but you can't please everyone I suppose.

Yep, you're right, there's a lot of grinding involved. I haven't personally stumbled on any technical issues yet though... yet.

No one will rip it to pieces, you don't know what a paragraph is, therefore no one will read it. Sorry, I tried to read it but I just couldn't do it.
Thanks for everyones thoughts and advice, its been great to read. I have decided to just go for it.
After a long hard think about what to do i made the purchase, i was expecting to pay £40 but due to the current exchange rate i only got charged £34.00 so i guess i pocketed a little extra money i didnt think i was going to have so thats a good start lol! Im currently downloading now its been going for a good few hours and its currently going really slow so ive been looking for third party download sites to try and download it directly instead of torrent hopefully it will be done by tomorrow. I dont like the way my free game time is being taken up by download time but hey you cant have everything i guess.
i had a read junzo's post and its a great description of a first time play in darkfall, just like you junzo im not going to approach this game with massive amounts of expectation becuase with almost every game ive been dissapointed. I hope i can get a good couple months fun out of this as it seems my perfect MMO environment with the full loot pvp, skill based inplace of levels and classes (i love this in other games), im guessing there may/wil be many flaws but hopefully ill be able to see past themand have a good play for a while.
Thanks everyone and carry on the discussion as such

It would be great to see a follow-up post from you in a few weeks detailing your experience and feelings, as one entering the game for the first time now. Two suggestions: Be patient with the User Interface, as it takes a few hours to learn and get used to. Ask questions if you have them on the official boards. Second suggestion is to try and find a good group of people, a guild, to run with, who cooperate and work well together.
I assume you are playing Euro, but if on NA pm me for help if you want.
Good luck -CC

Good write up, but please break paragraphs Walls of text are hard to read
It's impossible to tell whether its a good or bad game as a whole with the way the alignment sytem is. Even endgame politics ect.. are useless. There are some great things about DF, but it's looking to be a little to carebear for us.
See you in the dream.. The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

Everyone's post count was low at some point so people should remember that before putting on their critic (ass)hats.

Um, what? Noone in a clan cares about the alignment system. If anything it's carebear to care about your alignment, most people only care whether you are alliance (friend) or not (foe).

So much for DF being a game with freedom. There is no way of playing this game, there is only one way of playing, as there is no other way of playing. You have to macro afk, you have to pvp, you have to carfe only alliance or not.
That is all freedom is in DF. Heck. I got the feeling that I have more freedom in GW (put in any other games). At least I can change teams without changing guilds.

It's impossible to tell whether its a good or bad game as a whole with the way the alignment sytem is. Even endgame politics ect.. are useless. There are some great things about DF, but it's looking to be a little to carebear for us.
See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
Actually, this is a fairly good write up of someone's first days in an MMO. Even though your post count is low, and, thus, people may discredit you on that, I find this a very feasible review. Good job.
