Classes and proffesions.

pistolierpistolier Member Posts: 91

Hi there

I've been playing WoW since TBC was released and am rather tired of it, it's monotony and uniformness have finally gotten the better of me and as such I want to move onto greener pastures.
Unfortunately WoW has made me rather phobic and paranoid about classes and the way a game is ''set'' so I wanted to ask some experienced players...

How limited are you? how much is ''skill'' based and how much is class abilities?

I apologize for using this as an example but if I role a ''shaman'' in Aion will I regret not rolling a ''Rogue''

I am aware that nothing is set in stone, however I don't want to be penalized for making a choice and then have to live with it because thats just the way things are and I need to L2P if you catch my meaning...

Secondly proffs. How big of a part do they play in Aion? Which is better suited to what class? And is there one that is a pure money maker and not an occasional one? For example Leatherworking vs Jewelcrafting.

If you take the time to read this and reply you have my thanks in advance. Also I just want information, I'm not looking to defame any game or anything like that. i only have the experience of one mmo to draw upon which is why those referances are made...

Well, expect something similar to wow with a lineage2 face. Now days alot of developers only know how to design games around wow like features wich can be seen all the way back to everquest. So if your tired of does things you mention, get ready to see them agein with another face. I play lineage2 and iv playd wow and i can say Aion is a hybreed of does tow games.

This is basic info. I cant really tell you details, sorry.

Why do people keep comparing everything to wow.  say it goes back to things you see in everquest.  It sound like people think that wow was the first to do everything.  In fact they were far from the first for anything, Everquest and Anarchy online were the 3d mmo creators.  if not for them we would not have any of the mmo's we have now.  As far as characters in Aion, its not going to be wow with a linage 2 face.   Its AIon with and Aion face.  You need to try it for your self.  Thats the only way to tell weather a game has what you want.  and it will take time for them to balance the classes.  Take a look at EQ2, they are still playing with balancing so it can take a while.

THIS IS A PROBLEM YOU ARE GOING TO FACE IN ANY CLASS BASED MMO (caplocks grr.. not retyping it)

They are all useful and you can take all of them. You just can only level one to max, tho.

The max is 450, the others you can take to 399... but to level all of them is going to cost alot....

Some are better money makers then others.

Because, especially in the case of the op, they probably haven't played Everquest but only played WoW.

I do actually think that Aion has some WoWisms but also some L2 isms that are married to give you Aionisms.

Op... I suggest you got to a fansite like aionsource.com and do some poking. There are class forums. Also, I suggest you try to get into one of the betas for Aion.

First off lets talk about classes. When you first start off you pick one of 4 classes, Fighter, Scout, Priest or Mage. You will playt this class till lv 10. At level 10 you will have to choose.

Fighter becomes Gladiator or Templar (I cant tell you much about these two I am not a tank person myself)

The Scout becomes Assassin or Ranger (Assassin is a upclose dps character that can use poisons while the Ranger does dps with the bow and close combat and also learns to use traps)

The Priest becomes a Cleric or a Chanter. (Cleric is a heavy armor healer and is the main healer for the game. The Chanter while also a healer it is more of a secondary healer. The chanter is more of a group buffer.)

The Mage becomes a Sorcerer or a Spiritmaster. (Sorcerer is your direct damage spell class, they also have some crowd controll abilities. The Spiritmaster also has some dd abilities but they summon elemental pets to help them fight. Earth, Air Fire and Water pets.)

As for the Proffessions, in this game there is no real limit on your tradeskills. You can learn them all as long as you are willing to spend the time and money to advance. I am not 100% sure on this next part but it is what I have been told. You can only "Master" one though. Meaning take it all the way to the final advancement.

    Hope this helps some.

From what I have read is that you do not have a "build" like in wow - which is good for pvp but useless/degraded in pve, and the other way around. You get a all spells/abilities that your class can use and you need to pick the best for that situation - e.g. when fighting a mage you would want something like "kick" - from rogue class, wow - or Cloak of Shadows, wotever u fancy and when you go up against a warrior, you would want bleed.....thats my opinion. Any case you have stigmas that is sorta like your "skill tree", were you can put in different spells/abilities which will give you the upper hand in certain situations.

this is only my point of view from READING about the game, so correct me if I'm wrong, I don't mind :)

I guess people that are only coming from WoW and want to play something like their shaman or druid would find a chanter or cleric fun to play.

That to be honest is hard to say. There is no quick and easy translation between the two for most classes.  Some obviously translate over well like the Rogue plays like the Assassin, The Mage in WoW plays similar to the Sorcerer. The Warlock plays similar to the Spiritmaster.

Each class seems to have its own quirks and play style.

To your first question I think that really rests on the idea of class balance. Still Aion is different than WoW in which each class seems to fit a role well, where as in WoW multiple classes can serve a role. Obviously there will probably be balance issues but I don't think it'll be that bad. More of a matter of personal opinion though, of course.

As far as crafting goes everyone can use the general "gathering" skill. So instead of splitting between mining/woodcutting/herbalism/ect. you just have gathering, which is a good change of pace from WoW and other games.

Crafting you can get every skill up to 399 and then you can master one, which allows you to get it to 450. I don't know how big of a role they play, but I do know that you can craft some pretty top end gear (or at least you can get gold items through "crits") so I'd assume it is pretty useful.

    *sighs*

You know, not every fecking MMO has to have classes and professions, I got about two sentences into your statement and I wanted to flame you with my official unoffical flame thinger............but I didn't.......I'll try to be civilized.

Stop comparing shit to WoW......its garbage....garbage painted happy sunshine yellow, a color that science has proven attracts the attention of humans.

This game is more balanced than WoW, or so far from what I have seen it is. However unlike said infernal piece of rotten garbage this game focuses more on team PvP, also known as RvR (Raid Versus Raid). So unlike WoW which is more focused on small scale PvP, this one is focused on the large scale picture. Thus the balance probably comes into play when you are working as a team, so pick the class that does what you would like to do for a team and it should balance out in your favor, I believe.

    By professions you mean crafting?

"Six diffeernt professions are currently available in the game. These are Weaponsmithing, Armorsmithing, Jewelcrafting, Alchemy, Tailoring and Cooking. Discussion over these professions can be found HERE"

To get the link to where the discussions are click the Aion FAQ stapled at the top of this forum, all that info is in there.

So yeah..........don't compare EVERYTHING to WoW......I've been playing WoW since a month after release and I've played many other games, they aren't all the same. WoW just has a monopoly over the pawns....er I mean common population :P

1st off WoW is not garbage...

    RvR = Realm vs Realm

I compared games to other games I play all the time, when they play kinda the same.

Comparing WoW to Aion isn't a leap of faith.

Early levels of Aion do feel like WoW mixed with a little Lineage 2 to me.

Meh, I'm biased, and your right RvR is Realm vs Realm, I keep calling it Raid Versus Raid for some reason >.< I think its cause since there are only two factions thats really what it boils down to in my mind, since there aren't any other realms [player realms]. And I can say that your right, it isn't garbage, however cause I have a hate for it. I'll keep calling it garbage. I'm a fanboi after all :P

Here you go mate, ppl are so quick to judge one another in these forums and correcting everyone that the thread gets very old very quick...I usually stalk the forums and simply read, but here you go....

clicky This will take you to the wiki page that will have most of the information you need...From the story of Aion to classes to professions, raids and PVP. I not all information, for that you would need to actually play and see. You can get a Beta code by pre-ordering the game with ease.
