Need a Gamer who doesn't mind stupid/noob questions so I can pick his brain.

I'm an aspiring writer who has recently had an idea for a thriller/mystery novel or trilogy dealing heavily with a fictional MMO. The problem is that I know very little about MMO's. For research purposes, I am looking for a gamer who wouldn't mind if I P.M. him /her A LOT of questions about the subject.

I am hoping to find someone has played several MMO's and likes to talk about the subject. Basically, I need someone who likes to brag about how much he/she knows.

Thanks

Probably not the wisest advice, considering this board, lol.

Ha. Understandable. But surely if he posts his questions in a bullet (or numeric) form he'll get some fairly good responses.

That should not stop him/her from posting anyways.

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

I have a few reasons for wanting to PM a few gamers (one to three) rather than just posting the questions. The biggest one is that I have found that on public forums, some people will give misleading answers just for the fun of it. If I am only dealing with one or two people, I can just discontinue the relationship if I find that they are feeding me a load of crap.

Well, then I'll join the other poster in opening up an invite to ask any questions you desire. Just be lenient as I do have a wife and job. So if you ask me a question late a night, expect it not to be answered until the next day.

    Thanks so much.

Four people have responded and that is plenty for my needs. I'm sure that there will be questions that I'll want a general consensus on so I'll post those to the general forum.

    Again, thank you very much.

Sovrath's a good one to ask.  He's been around MMO's a long time, and I think he's balanced and insightful.

I don't think he remembers me, but I remember him well from my old Lineage II days.

I've been around the block since the old MUD days, but it looks like you found the number you wanted so I'll just keep an eye out foe your posts to see if you need any general stuff.

I'm sure you'll be able to weed out the ones you find more genuine to those who aren't. Also, you can check out .hack//sign for a story about a fictional mmo. It's anime but well written, although a little futuristic on the mmo side of things.

  • So you want to write ".hack"?

  • Bryan1108Bryan1108 Member Posts: 11

I don't know what .hack is. I assume you're talking about .hack//sign which the poster before you mentioned.

The basic idea (which I hope you'll understand is only about four hours old so I haven't come up with many details) is that a killer is targeting the members of a small guild in this game. Is that what .hack is about?

pm me and i'll give you my email, you can ask anything you like.

I have to question your intent.  The old adage, "Write what you know" applies especially here.  how can you even think of developing a story line about an MMO without having played?  It doesn't make sence....

  • Bryan1108Bryan1108 Member Posts: 11

You have a valid point but while I haven't played MMO's, I do play video games. I've also played table top Dungeons and Dragons for a long time so I do have some grasp on gamer culture if not the particulars of MMO gamer culture.

I guess the bottom line is that I think that it sounds like an interesting premise for a story and I don't think that I am going to get anyone else to write it for me. I'd rather take a shot at it than to just ignore the idea.

my advice is play a MMO and join a guild for awhile - a month or so should do it.  Nothing like REAL experience to flesh out your novel.

Also you should consider whether a popular or a failing MMO is more in tune with your ideas.

  • DoggarthDoggarth Member Posts: 22

Exactly, and depending on your story arc, pick our brains about which MMO to play.  A PvP playing psycho?  A role playing stalker?  You get the idea, I hope you will suceed..

  • Bryan1108Bryan1108 Member Posts: 11

I'm pretty sure that I'll join a real game at some point.

I am not sure which one though. The game in the story is about modern adventure. Basically, I was at a friend's and we were playing several games. There was Resident Evil 5, a Ninja Gaiden game and a newer Tomb Raider. I started thinking that it would be cool if you could create your own character and have a ninja, soldier, medic or whatever based entirely on how you arranged it, probably using a system of skill points or something.

The murderer is killing the other gamers as a smoke screen. He/She has a motive for killing one of the main characters but wants to create a smoke screen and send the authorities chasing after a "psycho gamer serial killer who got obsessed with the game".

  • elderotterelderotter Member Posts: 651

and why is the killer stalking a game's players - to restore interest in the game/drive players away?  And why 1 particular guild?  Did they gank him/her? Camp the respawn spots or farm spots?  Not invite him/her to their groups/guild?  Is your killer a loser in life... was he/she a bed-wetter?

Sounds like a good start but make sure you stay away from such ideas as "Stay Alive" the horror movie 2006) with an mmo plot, or shows like 'Numbers' where they also made a mystery about real killings of guildmates of a fictitious mmo.

As someone else stated, write what you know and that also refers to being aware of other like-minded projects out there.

Wish you the best of luck!

I don't read or write so don't ask me any questions.

But south park Season 10 - Episode 8 should answer a few questions for you.
