Looking for a community not a game...

DewmDewm Member UncommonPosts: 1,337

reading the other thread "leveling only fun once" I realised I kinda felt the same way, and I was looking for more of a community then another dull leveling game.

What i'm looking for is a game that while it has leveling and fighting...those arn't even close to the main objectives....in fact there are no objectives. where crafting and trading is just as intersting/time consuming as fighting. where I have my own house that I can do stuff in. get a mount and enjoy traveling the land. not for the sake of finding a new raiding spot, but just for the sake of exploring.

I remember in WoW one of the most fun times I had, was when i was like...around lvl 30 if I remember right, and I snuck into a lvl 50 area, and just wen't fishing. fished for around 4 hours, then made a fire and cooked it up. to me that was entertaining.

Meh, maybe my time in this genre is done. :S

Sounds like you read my most recent post on that thread :D.  If not you should :p.

I feel the same, there just hasn't been any worthwhile sandbox MMOs lately, which is where you might find that kind of environment.  I've played just about every mainstream P2P MMO out right now, and in terms of a friendly community FFXI is the best I've seen.  I didn't stick with the game though just because you can't really explore freely due to sharp level differences between zones and the huge amounts of time it takes to get anything notable done.  The xp grind really gets to ya, and unfortunately it's like most games; the endgame is where it's at pretty much =/.

Seems like only the indy devs want to try games like this unfortunately, and we know how those games tend to turn out.  Until someone that can put some money behind a game like this and doesn't choke the life out of it (*cough* SOE) looks like we'll be stuck with themepark level grinds and repetitive endgames where everyone treats eachother like dirt (see: WoW).

If you find the game you're looking for, let me know, cuz I'll be at the tent behind yours in line at gamestop lol.

I dont see any reason you couldnt enjoy the genre. LOTRO is pretty casual and the crafting is decent. I always wanted to try the farming but never did. It has fishing now i understand. I agree the WOW fishing is incredible. I enjoyed it a lot and made some decent gold selling the cooked fish as well.

theres no point to be social on a game if you wanna be so social so bad get some rl freinds instead if you even have any lol

Most MMO veterans thirst for a game to come around that is along these lines. Unfortunately I believe we're in the minority and would be considered a niche to mainstream developers, which bears itself out since most sandbox style MMOs are coming from indy developers these days. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it would be nice to see a developer with the capital of say a Blizzard or SOE make a sandbox style MMO, just to see what could be done. That's not to say that an indy developer can't make a truly outstanding MMO, but I'd just like to see what would happen... I'm currently deep into the summer MMO doldrums and can't stand logging into the games I play right now.

    Yes I "lol'd" at you.

I have RL friends but the problem is we all have jobs, and after work, alot of times we are just like "meh i'm tired and going home.......maybe we'll do somthing this weekend"

And I live up here in Alaska. and its a more rural area, and all but 1 of my friends lives about 45 minutes away (drive time) so I can't be like "Cya in a lill whlie hun (yes i'm married)" and then go hang out with a bud for a hour or 2.

So after my wife and I get home from work. she likes watching her TV shows, and I like gaming. and I think a good community based game, where questing and griding wasn't 90% of the gameplay would be alot of fun.

Well, we saw what SOE can do with it: start something decent, and just when you think they've really got something they remake it into a WoW clone =/.  I think Blizz could do a good job of it if they made sure to stay away from the more linear aspects of WoW.  They like to micromanage things a bit too much though.  Balance things as best you can in the beginning, give players the tools they need and then let it go; just make adjustments when the community asks for them (besides adding new content and bug fixing obviously).

I think we're all in that state about now =/.  Seriously contemplating cancelling my current sub (WoW).  Just need to fill the void somehow :p.

I quit playing WoW last summer (before WoTLK) and I just resubed about a week ago, and was shocked into horror from the new updates.

Seriously, when I quit I was like "there is no way they can make this easier".......but to my supprise it is. anyways long story short I canceled again. and back playing "Peggle" on my xbox360's arcade *sigh*

I do get togeather with friends once a week and play AOE2, which is a blast!

It's this kind of maturity we see in most of the current MMO communities. /roll eyes...

If we didn't want a social experience to some degree the "MM" in MMO would be pointless.

Hey, peggle is awesome (there's even a WoW peggle now lol).

I got sick of raiding and pvp on the game, nowadays I spend most of my time leveling alts (might be the hardest/most different part of the game now lol).  I pretty much do it for it's own sake too, since I won't want to play them once they hit 80 lol.  Sad, I know.

I go back and play diablo 2 with some friends every now and then >.>.

Well I'm the head of a gaming community and I've been searching for a good game for us to set up shop. We're all seeking the same thing, a game with something more. If you're interested in signing up with us, maybe we can find a good game. We all know each other but we welcome new guys to the group.

personally im paying attention to mortal online

the community seems rather decent, the development team seems friendly and honest.

if you can get over the 1st person view it seems like mortal will have alot to offer to the sandbox idea.

Have you tried Free Realms? It sounds like it would be right up your alley. Okay, so you don't get your own house, but everything else.

Why does it hurt when I pee?

    Try eve.

Its an open sandbox, where most of the content is player driven. Dont focus on your skill points, and focus on just interacting with people and you will have a blast.

You could give Phantasy Star Universe a try I am on PC/PS2 servers. The age group tends to be a bit older and muture then every other game I have played. Some people come on just to chat or socialize or just make a new friend or two. There is always plenty to talk about and the drama can be pretty hilarious and just as fun to watch as it is to go level or go on a mission etc.
