Is this anything like Ulitma Online (pre-renaissance)

jahwarrior28jahwarrior28 Member UncommonPosts: 32

I just starting reading about this game and it  reminds me of old school UO. I liked the open pvp, full looting and skill based system .   I was just wondering if anyone who has played both could do a quick comparison.

Thanks

The only simillarity between the two games is.

    Outdated graphics. (zing)

Skill based system that requires you to level individual skills.

UO's was heads and tails better though.

A broader answer would be no, nothing like UO.

In theory.. yes.. in practice no,

If you watch The Karate Kid backwards it's about this karate champ that just kinda slowly becomes a pussy and ends up moving back to Jersey

No, this is not like UO. On paper it has some similarities, but in practice even those go out the window. Much of what DFO has done is a very bad attempt at what UO did. DFO has it's own charm, but it's far from polished still. Give DFO a shot, but go in with low expectations and what ever you do make sure you're not expecting UO:2.

No. First three responses covered it pretty well.

    Oh, UO has better sound!

So believe it or not asking if this game is like UO is a sin on these boards... its some kind of holy game to most of the board trolls. Most of them played the game not at all or in passing yet use it for credibility in their posts.

I didn't play the game myself much but I played for a few weeks in the early release and ragequit when someone griefed everyone with bags around the rez shrine.

I am playing with someone that played very very heavily for 2+ years from release or beta (i played uo with him early on too). Because he is not a weirdo board troll he says "wow this is UO 2" and loves the game for the last month and a half.

He is operating on 3 hours sleep every night since NA-1 release, totally enthralled.

I love the game but it does have some issues. I think however over time that it will thrive like Eve Online has.. and for the same reasons.

Fifty bucksisn't so much to try out what has been a really great game for an ex-UO player or two.

    Similarities

    FFA PvP

    Skill based progression system

    It has player housing

    Lack of actual safe zones

    Differences

Player housing isn't fully customizable and isn't a safe zone

    Siege focused

    PvP focused

    No skill cap

    Limited RP elements

Limited roles due to virtually no limitations

    Universal Banks

In short, its not enough like UO to say its a UO2. Its closer to an SB 2

Anyone who keeps bashing the graphics must have a shitty computer. Darkfall looks better than a lot of the shiity carebear MMOs coming out that have been downgraded to run on mass market PCs.

I hesitate to say it, but there is another MMORPG in development that draws heavily on pre-trammel UO.  I'll go ahead and mention it though, since it will most likely come up sooner or later.  This other game is similar to the point of having a flagging system that is a cut and paste of the flagging system from UO.  Out of respect, I will avoid mentioning the name, but you can google the developer name if interested.  Also, the developers are big fans. of old school UOas shown below.

    Henrik Nystrom (developer)

I and the Co fonder of defiance were talking about having a fight night in the old age of UO.

I already noticed there is an interest among us [name redacted] members, and he noticed there was a good interest on the Defiance boards as well.

So now the challenge is on.

Latest word from Defiance UO community is that they are very much looking forward in beating all [name redacted] members. We have to make sure we put up a good fight for this fight night event

So people sign up here, where are all UO veterans up for the challenge?

New player's works as well so just sign in here if you are interested.

I have arranged so everyone signing up for this event will have 1 char finished in desired skills/stats, meaning no need to train skills or stats, instant fun! You will also get reagents, weapons and armor if needed for this event.

    Similarities

    FFA PvP

Skill based progression system - It's only similar in that it is Skill based, implementation is totally different.

    It has player housing

Lack of actual safe zones - Cities were pretty danged safe, once you had the proper commands macro'ed (macro's made with the client) Ahh, the sound of a Hally whack by a City Guard was very pleasant.

    "THWAACK!!! ARRRGGGHHHH!!!"

    Differences

Player housing isn't fully customizable and isn't a safe zone

    Siege focused

    PvP focused

    No skill cap

    Limited RP elements

Limited roles due to virtually no limitations

Universal Banks - Wrong. Makes me doubt you even played. UO's banks were as universal as it gets. In fact, the way it was coded had one major flaw that was quite exploitable.

In short, its not enough like UO to say its a UO2. Its closer to an SB 2

Not even close.  I'll give you a list of what each game has over the other just for comparisons sake...

UO- Better graphics, gameplay, combat, banks, community, crafting, economy, housing, music, dev team, skills, monsters, world.

    Darkfall-

    I rest my case.
