Well I have to say I downloaded the trial and started it up. First to set everything to high so I could get sub par graphics I had to edit the registry. For me no big deal I work in It and do it all the time, but for some average joe might be different.

Then I started to actually play, well if you even call it that. The controls for this game are the most unconventional, I mean to the point where its not even enjoyable to play.

I managed after a little while to find my way out of this keep/castle thing. after standing in front of a worm trying everything I could I finally after 4-5 min started to punch this thing and finally killed it.

Im no idiot to MMO's and started with DAOC then went to WOW,WAR, LOTRO, and played bit of others like AOC,Eve, etc.

So unless your totally cool with waiting 6 hours to download and patch just to see what I mean, I would advise you if your coming from a WOW/WAR/LOTRO MMO to stay away.

I totally agree with this comment.  If you are looking for another WoW, War, LOTRO clone, this is not your game.  If you like a game that actually has a learning curve (one of the sharpest in MMO's, close race with Eve Online) then this is the game for you.

    That seems highly debatable.

I will agree however that the controls are indeed odd.

Let me guess your also pissed theres no hotbars? Oh oh you will be even more pissed when you get higher and wonder why an even prey keeps killing you.

Also you are indeed an idiot if you researched the game you would have found out it was a PS2 game for a couple years before going to PC which would explain everything about the controls UI. Now you can plug in a controller and use that to play or SE was kind enough to make a micro keyboard which allows you to use WASD keys.

"Im no idiot to MMO's" haha you do realise the game is not designed to cater to lazy western gamers such as yourself, each game you named was some westernized casual game. FFXI is for the more hardcore MMOer unlike yourself with all of those westernized games tainting your opinion/experience of what an MMO is. Go play your WoW clones, the Final Fantasy community doesn't want this type of gamer/complainer.

Seeing as FFXI is one of the top MMOs out right now (1.2mil subs), and one of the oldest, I highly doubt your opinion is of any relevance here, it is just wrong. =P

FFXI is definitely not noob friendly.  If not for my friend and many friendly players, I would probably have gotten frustrated too.  The solo combat is probably the worst, but group combat is the best out of all the MMOs I've played.  This game is the total opposite of WoW.  I loved the game, but it took a lot of work (at the time) to do anything.

If you're looking for good group play, I advise you to try the game a little longer.  Ask for help if you have to.  It may have changed now, but back when I played everyone was very friendly and helpful (the best community I've seen yet).

Oh, and of course the graphics are sub par.  This game is pretty old now, and it was made for the ps2 in mind.

Please don't come to me and tell me Western game are casual.

    Let's look at WoW,

Raiding take 6 hours and there are more then 1 raiding dungeon. Motlen core itself take 4 hour to complete, then the raid dungeon after it take much more longer (i done up to Nax and quited and come back to level expansion and quit after leveled)

LBRS took 2-3 hour with a big group.

Leveling wise, Each wow level take at least 2 hour from 60 and beyond take at least 5 hour + 79-80 take over 10 hours for me without rest xp.

Now let's get to the Key part for raiding dungeon... take a week at least

Now let's look at PVP, it used to take 3 month to get highlord, now i don't know but it still take forever.

I can tell you from the time i achieve on my wow priest which was 80 which have over 60 ingame day still wearing crap from BFD (the raid dungeon after molten core) quited at 80 without getting new raid gear  compare to  my latest FFXI account which have also 60 ingame day having 3 level 75 (Cor 75, Dnc 75 RDM 75) Mission windy rank 9, ZM complete, COP 2-5 Aht 34 WoTG did not start. Done all dynamis. all subjob 37 (6 SJ)

    See the differences?

Apparently you have not played WoW recently, from what i've read here it seems like you only played pre-BC (First expansion). Right now in WoW wotlk to get epics in PVE you have the options of heroics which take around 30mins-1hr to complete, a 10 man raid which takes around 1 hr-1hr and a half, and 25 man raid which takes around 3 hours-4hours which is to get he best PVE gear in the game. Now currently to epics in PVP you have the options of doing battlegrounds (you can now queue fro everywhere and they are cross-realm) so you do not need to wait, and after doing battlegrounds for casually playing about 2 days (like 4 hours a day) you can get an epic piece of gear, the other pvp option you have is arenas which isn't time consuming to aqure epics but very difficult if you encounter hard teams, and the last way to get epics through pvp is by doing wintergraps. I was in full epics 6 weeks after being max cap of decently playing not playing hardcore at all. I might of not understand your post but it looks like it says at 80 you had BFD gear, that is literally almost impossible unless your brain dead because the gear you get from quests and instances from level from level 61-64 replace gear from that instance, It sounds like you've never played WoW or atleast only played before first expansion release.

The problem FFXI has is that it is not a very friendly to newcomers game, it really does become an amazingly fun mmo at higher levels but to get  there it could be very tedious and confusing. Doing the even most simple tasks such as forming an FFXI account, stacking something in your inventory, going to valkrum at level 10,, making money at low levels, finding party members on a map, changing graphic settings, and etc.... can be very confusing to somebody without a guide. FFXI is very different from other mmos control wise and everything, and certain aspects are almost impossible to findout unless somebody explains it to you. So from perspective of somebody whos new to the game without knowing anybody  or having help it gets to the point of wanting to quit before reaching the good parts of FFXI. It doesn't help getting elitist responses from the community either on the forum like were too good for you, FFXI has the best community ever, or go play WoW you lazy westerner. Last time I checked playing a videogame is considered lazy, you play for fun.

I love how some people believe that they are better because they play games like FF XI or Eve?  I bow to your self proclaimed "uberness"    ... I only wished I valued my sense of accomplishments and selfworth on the games I play.

I did not enjoy FF XI, i really wanted to, and I hope that FF XIV will not be just an updated version.

Apparently, wow didn't change then. Getting epic piece so important for wow? Yes it still is. It is even worse when i used to spent 4-5 hour a day to raid for a piece of gear that just simply getting obsolete the next update.

FFXI never have that problem, i get something level 25, i am using it forever. Peacock charm can be use by almost every non-mage jobs. It might took few hours to get, but i feel a worth of it.

WoW can't give me that, because what wow does it, let you earn your achievement and give you new achievement by making old achievement useless.

I personally hope FFXIV follow some of FFXI built and continue on the great game. No game is perfect, ffxi isn't either. (damn CoP mission storyline) But i love ffxi for developper that always thinking for its players not erasing player's effort by giving them new set of objective.

and FFXI story line is simply amazing!

Alright ... I'm a fan of both WoW and FFXI ...

FFXI makes players think that time spent equals some kind of skill and/or entitlement. For example, if you stand in the same spot for 8 hours and happen to with the claim on whatever his name is and the peacock charm happens to drop, you feel like you did something awesome. You didn't. What you DID do would look retarded to anyone who isn't into FFXI. You stood in a virtual room all day staring at a spot in a corner hoping something would happen, and then hitting a button when it did. If you find that fun, become a security guard IRL.

With a few exceptions, every encounter in FFXI is tank n' spank. Some mobs hit hard, some do AoE, but even some of the most ridiculously powerful bosses just stand there and hit the tank.

FFXI is also a LOT more of an unfriendly world, which I personally enjoy. You are rarely safe. "Easy prey" can eat you for lunch. You can be pleasantly grinding levels with an awesome party and Guivre can 2-shot you from behind. Life is harsh, making the game feel scary, and thus exciting.

WoW offers challenges of gameplay rather than time. There is simply nothing in FFXI that can rival the intricate detail and difficulty of high-end raids in WoW. Raiding Ulduar (or Sunwell in BC, or AQ40/Naxx in original WoW) takes a group of dedicated, coordinated players. Bosses that spawn adds, charge players positive and negative, cause walls of flame to move in various directions, breath fire in conical AoE, make players fly up in the air and take damage if they go near the ground - ALL HAPPENING AT ONCE!

WoW also offers arena, which for players at the higher levels is an extremely fast-paced, deep and complicated experience and which is simply far beyond anything FFXI's dated engine is capable of.

WoW gets the reputation for being easy because the overall game world IS easy. You will (almost) never get 1-shot from behind by a crazy mob (except maybe Fel Reaver, lol). You will never have to worry about traveling somewhere just because of high level mobs in your way. You don't need a group to level, and the actual experiece of leveling is so easy an 8 year old could reach the level cap (eventually) . That doesn't make the GAME easy, it makes leveling easy, which concurrently makes the game more accessible.

Personally, I have found great entertainment from both FFXI and WoW, and right now I have ultimately found neither satiate me any more. I am very excited to see what they do with FFXIV. From the interviews I have read, I think that they are going to take everything that was good about FFXI (the job system, the awesome feeling of accomplishment) and yet make it somehow more accessible (because FFXI is extremely inaccessible compared to basically every MMORPG launched since 2004).

I downloaded the free trial for this game, and was highly disappointed in it. The 1st thing i do in any MMO is test out the movement features seeing as to how i hate click to move MMOs. Here in FF XI  you dont have click to move, mouse movement, or WASD. So after about 5 min of trying to figure out how to move my dang character, i just quit the game and uninstalled it. Playing or not playing a game like FF XI has nothing to do with being lazy, it's simply just bad game design. Being able to walk or move in any game shouldnt be freaking rocket science

The fact that its a port from a console is enough to keep me far from this game. Been there done that with a few singleplayer games and  unintuitive is an understatement.
