I have to admit that my prefered gameplay in MMO's is teaming.
For this CBT I have rolled a Chanter, that It seems one of the best class to assist PVP teams. I usually don't roll healers. I roll nukers, assasins and some tanks with CC.
My experience with AION and teaming is positive. Is not the best game ever at teamming, but it works. There are some content that is team oriented, so teams create and I love that.
Not everything is perfect. Since theres not passive-target/active-target, healers has to change focus from mob to tank and to mob again, to deal some damage and change back to heal the tank (or other guy). Also, the challenge on the team quest feel somewhat unbalanced... the area around the mission is harder than the mission itself. It needs more "BIG UGLY MONSTERS" to kill. .. at least what I have see till level 20 asmo.
Now, 50% of playing a class is understanding other classes.
Thats my experience with classes:
- The templar is a good tank. It seems has the tools for the bussines. Obviusly always you can add more taunt skills, but It seems to work. Not all tanks are made equal. A tank with good gear really shine.
- The chanter is not a dedicated team. It can mantain a fullgroup alive againtst 3 elite mobs. But Is not designed for that, so It will burn all mana.
- Not much experience with clerics. I like more my class, chanter.
- The Gladiator is awesome. Seems the AOE class. It deal serius damage and is all over fun. Of course, need some healing to make it stay alive :-)
- The sorcer is just right on what you expect on a sorcer, not more, not less.
- Spiritmaster / Rangers. Just more DPS, It don't seems specially usefull on a fullgroup. But I don't know the classes. Maybe for boss with AOE attacks?. 2 rangers + 1 chanter can make for some fun fast xpeing
- The assasin, like the glad, is a good contribution to damage. The "extra damage from behind" can be a problem, in a area with patrols.
I want to play some PVP, to test how the classes feel there. Oh... and maybe I am ignorant, but I don't see much utility on team for a spiritmaster / ranger. The ranger has to kite A LOOT on this game, but I suppose theres already a billion of guys that love playing rangers in MMO's, so I don't think this will change the mind of anyone. And spiritmaster, beind the PET CLASS, same thing, a billion will take it, because love pet classes.

I'm going to be playing a chanter on release as well. I actually didn't even really group up in this open beta (no reason to at the lower levels for me) but part of the reason for playing a chanter is I feel so self sufficient. I've got DPS comparable to my gladiator, good heals and plenty of buffs which makes soloing an ease.
Of course I've also gotten used to playing the hybrid dps/healer role in PvP, having played a Tempest of Set in AoC and a Warrior Priest in WAR. I'm looking forward to how the chanter does in that role.
Hopefully not too many will roll them either, It would be nice getting a group with ease.
Yea. But I suppose most people are not into group pvp, so I suppose will roll pure classes like cleric, templar, etc... that make more sense for PvE.
use the Assist key default ~ to jump from mob to player getting targeted by that mob just a tip for next beta
I will look into that. Maybe rebind it to F, since ~ don't exist on my keyboard.
Templars are very, very hard to kill. A Templar has decent killing speed as well. Mostly, I predict that clerics will be the rarest class. This is because killing anything on a cleric solo takes a long time compared to the other classes.
You should check out Kilkil's post on rvr. It sounds like the spiritmaster has the most cc and the ranger has the highest burst damage in the first 5s of combat.
And on paper it sounds like the templar is the least group friendly (not counting the sin) when you can just be a gladiator with a lot of AOE stuff etc.

I am planning on making a cleric, I have not played the beta or anything although I was a day late even with the keys.
But I love healing and hopefully pure healing can get me into some groups pretty easily.
I prepurchased on Saturday and jumped into the fray. I was most impressed with the character customization and the many things you can do to your toon so that it has a personal, authentic and individual feel. Now, I by no means, soared through questing and levelling, but I did get the opportunity to test out both the Sorc and the Cleric.
Sorc: What can I say that is not already inherent in this class? You get a lot of burst dmg in a short period of time. Questing was a breeze and lower level pvp (lvls 9-12) had me dominating the field. What I found lacking in the Mage/Sorc(as well as other caster classes) was the casting pixels/graphics. Aion sports a very keen eye to environmental detail (ie. wonderful landscapes, amazing skylines) but drops the ball when it comes to dressing up spells and their visual effects.
Cleric: Though my early level progression went smoothly, I found that as I neared level 13, my progression slowed considerably. A cleric truly is most beneficial in a group and healing/smiting when and if needed. Again, as above, the casting visuals were off or me. I had expected everything about these characters to parallel those stunning visuals found in the environment. They did not.
I myself play a Chanter. I found it really easy to lvl to 24 over the past weekend thats with work and my baby sitting duites. I did do some group play and seem to keep everyone upto health so there was no real problem there. As for a pure healer after i saw a few i will more then likely roll one when the game goes live. They seem to be better suited for solo/group play but i could be wrong.
Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion
Playing Rift
Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(
i played a ranger in the last 2 betas and there a fun class to play if you choose not to kite.
I saw other rangers kiting alot and i never actually liked to kite in any game but in aion i dont believe you actually have to. I decided to just use the quick switch button once a mob got close enough. Now rangers dont have much defense but they do have a high dodge rate plus the skills that increase it, so just combine that with the right gear and mana stones you will dodge a good portion of attacks giving you the ability to use your counter attack and stun.
Now this is all from PvE and not PvP, i didnt get a chance to really try it but from what i see so far i think a ranger in a pvp group would be just added dps and traps (they seem useless to me in pve so hopefully they will be more useful in pvp)
hope i helped ^^
I just started this last CB .. and I enjoyed this game immensely .. I started with a warrior was going to go templar .. then saturday I started a new character wanted to try both races .. started a rogue and decided I didn't like the way Asmodian's run so I started a rogue on the Elyos side got it to 15 .. then tried once more on monday with an Asmodian mage .. over all I tried everything but a healer .. maybe I will try one of those next time
I played a chanter up to level 21 , And i grouped around the blackclaw area (asmodian) with a ranger, templar , sorc , spirit master an a cleric. We all worked well together , When things got hairy id help out healing as the fighting can get pritty hectic in group area's but it was funif the priest died id take over healing or heal the tank up and rezz the priest in combat etc. I dont think my buff's made a huge difference tho and i know they have "buffed" chanter buff's in the live asian game, but im still not sure if this class is gonna be wanted much at higher levels. I got a couple of buffs and two buffs around lvl 2 or 3 which i had no upgrade for all the way up to 21 which is anoying the only buffs i can give to people outside of a group are kinda lame and dont make much of a difference.
Playing a chanter can be fun but its press the same 1 button all the way up 19 when your fighting mobs and heal yourself, you get a second combo at 19 so then you you press 2 buttons all the way up 22 and im not sure if you get a new attack spell then. Got kind of repetative press 3...press 3 again for combo , or click second combo option , on cool down use the othe one zzz.
They need more skills , i dont think there is enough skills in this game and there to far spread out every 3 levels is long considering the time it takes to level 17-20 is paticurly slow.
I didnt try any other classes my friend tried a templar he enjoyed it but he also thought there wasnt alot of skills.
Also people should know flight in this game is not everywhere it is insanely restricted and alot of people will be very disapointed/angry over it come launch - guaranteed.
Altho i do enjoy the game and i will be playing at launch dont think it will keep me for long tho.
I hope your right as Cleric is my class choice but i saw a ton of them last beta
You shouldn't take the class number balance in any beta test as what the game will be like once the game goes live. People who actively attempt to participate in game betas do not represent the majority of people who will actually be playing the game. Also we only played from 1-20ish.
You can not look at the class numbers that early in the game and make a determination on what the numbers will be once people reach max level. I would venture to say that most people make more than one character and level them up to 10 or 20 before deciding which class they like best and stick with it.
Based on the Korean game I can make an educated guess that Priests will be rare.

Yeah there were a TON of Clerics I noticed last CB weekend, and I'm not sure why that is. Most people tend to not play pure healing classes in my experience compared to most other classes. Which kind of sucked because it made it harder for me to find a group to finish up the group quest chains. Unlike last time when I found it incredibly easy to find groups... But yeah, Clerics feel like your standard main healer class, but you better have a decent tank because healing threat is quite high...

I played a chanter up to 19. I like the class, very useful and fun. However being the main healer was pretty boring, basically just spamming the same key over and over and possibly using the HoT. Good as a hybrid, effective healer but boring if relegated to that. Unfortunately classes in that positions are usually forced to heal. I would liek to play one but I may not at relase simply because I learned my lesson to not do that. It gets tiresome.
As for PvP I think Chanter will be effective and fun but you can't expect to be high in kill counts. Not because of lack of DPS but because a) you will be a primary target and b) because you are a melee with little CC or closing ability.
I played on the weekend with a group with both a chanter and a cleric. The cleric DC'ed and we managed to continue with just the chanter healing, but she had to rest a lot.
So it's like there are 8 classes, but 1/5th of every team needs to be a cleric...
There are still a lot of sites listing the spiritmaster's water pet as a healer. Maybe if that was true, then a spiritmaster + chanter would be as good as a cleric.
What about the Cryengine´s Z-axis?
Are there still problems with group buffs and heals when flying as mentioned in this thread?

I dunno I main healed a Hero level mob where entire group except me and MT wiped and we did ok. Probably with a Cleric I could have kept at least one other guy alive, as I would have a couple more heals and the passive healing boost. I felt like the Chanter was able to perform but even if it had double the heal power of a Cleric it would be incredibly boring to play main healer as one.
You have two heals. A 2 second cast +hp with no CD and a HoT with a CD. You basically use the HoT to touch up non-tanks and Chain heal the MT. This is all you ever get other than a healing Aura and a Stigma.
Cleric has a few other options and it looks like it would be as decent as any other healer in most MMOs. But playing a Chanter as a main healer for a significant number of things is going to get old really really quick. Something like a Chanter + Gladiator +DPS in a small group setting is fun. You can heal people and fight fairly well. But pulling two+ elites you spam one button if you have to main heal, its a snooze-fest.

That's why I suggested there needs to be another class with some healing ability. If you had a spiritmaster and a chanter in a team and both had some healing ability, then maybe neither would have to focus solely on healing.
Look at WoW - 10 classes, and 4 with healing abilities (priests, shamans, druids and paladins)
As far as I know this has not been changed/fixed as of v1.5
