How to level in the mid 20's and up?

Ok, I'm basically new to the game, played a few years back, didn't get that high of a level, and have a level 26 scrapper on the hero side.  My wife finally decided to play an MMO with me, and this is what I got her started on.  We are now 24.  I play with one of my buddies as well.

We aren't the best laid out team, dominator, corrupter, and mastermind, but we seem to be doing fine. (Mastermind isn't always teaming with us)

But I'm lost on how to get the best experience.  I suppose I could go and create an all LT type AE mission, as I've messed around with that, but that sounds quite boring and would be just grinding out the same mob.

It took us about 8-10 missions with 1 death to get for 23 to 24, on challenge level 4 with 3 of us in their for all but 3missions.  I'm thinking maybe we are doing something wrong, unless its suppose to take that long.

Any tips on how we can better maximize our exp without getting into a larger group?

What's the rush? There's no end game. Once you hit 50, all you can do is keep doing the same old thing with your level 50 or start a new toon at level 1 and do it all again. I've run out of slots now and half of them are 50's that very rarely get played any more - bit of a waste really but until they do something for the 50's that's the way it'll stay.

The amount of exp you need to gain a level rises with each level you gain (if that makes sense) so it is supposed to take longer to gain each successive level. You probably won't like the answer but the best way to maximise exp is to be in a big team. If you insist on being in a very small team then you're in for a long trek. As I said though, you needn't rush, there's simply no point.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, except maybe expecting to gain levels as fast as a team specifically set up for that purpose (mis)using the mission architect...which is generally as boring as heck...

Don't 2 more classes open up once you gat a character to 50?  Of course then you have to level them up also, but it is something.  I do agree the should either raise the level cap or do end-game missions.  Especially with Champions Online coming.

I'd say find a good guild and get someone to leech off of while they farm a map. Your presence there gives them more mobs to kill, which is good for them, and you get gobs of xp.
