Hey,
One of the things that I disliked the MOST about FFXI was the fact that the PC version of the game was so poorly optimized. The controls were sluggish and unresponsive, not to mention you couldn't alt-tab out to answer an IM or something without using windower. SE eventually put in a Windowed mode, but it made your framerate go WAY down. No, my PC isn't the problem, I'm running two 295GTX's in SLI, 6gb ram, and a Core i7 processor. So basically, you were stuck in full screen mode, and lame controls for PC. I hate controllers, which is why I never got one. I understand that the game was made to play on a console, but please, for the love of god do something for us PC players! Make it a keyboard and mouse game like so many MMO's out there today (WAR, WoW, AoC, etc). And PLEASE let us alt-tab out!
Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this... it would make the game so much more enjoyable!

First off the lack of alt+tab was due to SE not wanting people to be able to start up 3rd party tools like a bot or a speed hack while they were in the game. It was an attempt to make the game very fair to everyone. Yes it does suck you couldn't use AIM, but if it would have kept that crap out of the game I'd sacrifice.
The windowed mode was quickly thrown together so you can't really think it was going to be great. Honestly I have never had a problem with using windowed mode but then again I don't have a high end rig and I don't give two shits about seemless raterates or a trillion colors over a billion colors or being able to see a mountain i'll never been able to reach.
Personally I think the controls are quite intuitive for a PC I can control my entire character with just my right hand. I think a lot of people got caught up on the controls because they were so hellbent on using the mouse and WASD b/c they were used to it and so adverse to change. Honestly you don't mindlessly click away at shit like you do in WoW and WAR so there is no need for a mouse and thus the current controls are perfect for the game (I even have a keyboard for my 360/PS3 because of FFXI). If there is some sort of hotbar or something like that in FFXIV then yes you will need a mouse and thus you need your left hand to move. You will get your WASD+Mouse combo that you want. I doubt it will be like that FFXIV is once again being designed for a console which doesn't have a mouse. Unless one is going to come packaged with the game you are going to see another controller based game just like FFXI. And just before you say anything having a different UI for PC and PS3 is dumb so don't even suggest that. It is what it is .. err ... going to be ... and I 'd put my money on a controller or a keyboard only control scheme again.
That and it kept people/slowed them down. from using a ton of help guids, and quest helpers. which in my opinion kept the game real. you actually had to pay attention to a quest, and have friends help you. None of this "dangit which way....*google* oh ok OH and thats what I get..."
kept it more real...

I dunno, everyone and I do mean EVERYONE I knew used Windower. Talked about it in Jueno in say, no one ever got banned.
No one has ever been banned for windower to this day as far as I know, and honestly it was the most useful program ever, I could actually look up quest details for quests that were extremely vauge. Perhaps I could find mining spots on a map so I knew where to go without actually having to do the group quest to get a map for the zone.
I think that the way they designed it origonally to prevent 3rd party programs by making it so you couldn't Alt tab did nothing to stop hackers. I would see people flee hacking and auto claim hacking all the time. The only thing it did was annoy the causal player.
When did you play?
(I play'd about 4 months after it released)
and I don't remember any of that... :S but its been a long time also.

Does anyone really think that no alt+tab is going to stop "l33t h4cker boi" from cheating? All it did imo was diminish every fair players gaming experience. Apparently SE agreed and fixed it. Too bad they didn't see fit to fix their UI as well or I might still have a sub right now! hah No way they will design XIV for console again, I just hope they finally decide to let players have some control and allow for custom UI's.
What do you mean by fix? make it like all other mmo's UI crap. Personally ill welcome back FFXI's old UI if it makes its way to XIV. If by fix you mean expand upon and tweak a little then I agree.
They are designing it for console because its coming out on a console, the PS3 (I swear I wish I knew where some of these people come up with the crap they spew on the forums). I highly doubt that they will design it with intentions of PS3 user being forced to use a Keyboard/mouse. So look for a controller friendly UI. (Which I like)
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
you're problem is you need to run windower. no SEs windower.
I played it on the pc at NA release and got a controller for it and I loved it. I mean, the game was designed for PS2 and I'm sure FFXIV's primary platform will be PS3 since the PS3 is from what I hear pretty big in Japan (the native country of the game and the console!!1!11).
I'll definitely be playing XIV on PS3 as well since I'd rather not have to mess with upgrading a computer (oops I have a laptop so I'd be S.O.L. if the game didn't run well on it as is).
I very much liked the PC controls on FFXI. I also played since the NA release, easily picked up the controls for it and love it still to this day. I also played it on the 360 and didn't like the controls so much, but that is personal preference, I just prefer to use keyboards.
Also I have heard that many people get banned for using windower, if that is true or not I do not know. I used it for a long time and was never banned myself.
I really hope they do not make this similar to WoW or any of the other new mmo's with the UI design. It would just cause more problems imo.

To be perfectly honest, the lack of alt+tab wouldn't have stopped someone from running an external application. It probably wasn't a 'feature' but the after-effect of the rather quick porting job that was done to get the game out on the NA PC market. Of course, if SqueEnix came out somewhere and said specifically that it was done to prevent 3rd part apps, then more power to them. I thought all of that was handled through the launcher.
The windowed mode was quickly thrown together so you can't really think it was going to be great. Honestly I have never had a problem with using windowed mode but then again I don't have a high end rig and I don't give two shits about seamless frame rates or a trillion colors over a billion colors or being able to see a mountain i'll never been able to reach.
Taking a look back at it, when Windowed mode was released, and considering the amount of time that it 'has' been released, SE could have updated it and/or fixed the problems with it. I can't complain about it much though as at least it's really functional as opposed to the windowed mode in EVE-Online (which is horribly terrible and barely works.

Glad you enjoyed the controls in FFXI. I did too... However, as every PC out there today will have a mouse/keyboard setup, and SE are planning on releasing the game on both PC and PS3 at launch, it would be nice if they'd include support for both controllers and kb/m combinations for the PC users.
Oh... And you wouldn't need to package a mouse/keyboard with the game. The PS3 has USB2.0 ports on the front and can use almost any HID compliant keyboard and/or mouse; Even those old ones with the PS/2 connectors (you can get port converters for around $2.50 down at BestBuy.
All in all I hope SE listens to the community and tries to satisfy both sides of the fence. Ignoring one part of the community is going to do nothing more than shrink the community to some degree. Two different UI's for different play styles would be great. A customizable UI would be even better. A smart UI that recognized both types of input and made the interface intuitive enough to deal with both types simultaneously would be ideal.
Leave the elitist crap for the EVE-O guys. We're the best and making everyone else feel like crap about having an opinion about internet pixels.

I was refering to the UI, the topic, I know it is going to be played on the PS3, and if you like that old UI, good for you, but not everyone is going to be using a controller and it would be nice this time around if SE made a UI for PC or as I said before, allowed us to make one we like.
I agree.
Nowaday, people don't even care about reading and thinking about the quests. They just type it in Google and have all the quests figured out for them, no challenge... I couldn't do that in FFXI and I think that was fun. I can't lie, I've been using Google too for other mmorpgs execpt EQ1 and FFXI, and those 2 games were the ones I had the most fun in... Was it a coincidence?
Now playing : FFXIV
Waiting on : TBD
Best MMORPGs played : EQ, FFXI
I agree.

No coincidence, I agree with you that this made the games more real and more enjoyable. Having everything done for you makes it a job to level and do things, never fun.

If anything they need to make the game more real with quests ... Honestly people turned to wiki for answer in question because there was no rhyme or reason to go from Windy and talk to NPC X then fly to Bastok and talk to NPC Y usually. There are very few quests where the NPCs tell you to go to your next target or that the original NPC even remotely would know about the next target.
FFXI easily ranks in the top of any list revolving around "worst pc user friendliness". It was atrocious as far as I'm concerned.
