You can't get an unbiased option on this one
And most are already sooooooo sick of this discussion
mmorpg.com = wowfanboi area (see at eq2 rating=)
Just try it out
thats really true. Just try it for yourself. Surely by now you've heard of the diffrences in the two games. Go with what YOU think you want to play, and try it out.
By the way I've seen that you've posted on both forums. Expect to see a lot of "EQ2 sucks" over there. You'll get an idea of what the communities are like. EQ2 is good, WoW is good. Just different.
In the words of John Stewart:
"I'm not your monkey."
Seriously though, there are several threads where people say they're leaving. Lots of people post criticisms, and as a result you tend to get more opposing opinions there. Go check them out on both boards.
Otherwise, I will link to another forum where we have a 2 page thread where people are discussing this very issue, and hope it's not against the rules if it happens to be, because I dont have time to look up the rules right now. My apologies in advance if this is not kosher.

I agree with the others that you need to try it out. EQ2 is a different animal than WoW or SoR, and you will either like it or not.
I can give you some pros and cons about EQ2.
Pros: Nice eye candy when it comes to graphical detail. A pretty deep and detailed game environment and character developement.
Cons: SoE and customer service when it comes to their products. I say this based on personal experience and you can read of other's bad experiences with SoE. Problem with game code and driver support on some video cards especially the nVidia Geforce 6800LE, 6800, 6800GT and 6800Ultra series of cards. There have been issues with stuttering and othe video problems with these cards.
Those are really the most unbiased pros and cons I can give. The best thing to do is try out for yourself. I wish you the best of luck finding an mmorpg to enjoy be EQ2, WoW or other one.
The problem with any forum is that it only represents a small proportion of actual players.
So the endless threads about poor SOE customer service etc are usually based on 'a problem that someone friends brothers uncles dog' once had and never got resolved! Ask the other 99% of players about their experience and most will say they are loving it (if you can get them away from the keyboard).
Also, it's usually the most vocal group that will be lured to the forums either to flame a game that has annoyed them in some minor way (i.e. they can't level as fast as they want, or they can't be uber enough), or to rip it out of a.n.other game that they fear will somehow undermine their play experience, even tho they 'know it sux' and wouldn't touch it with a 10foot barge pole.
So what I'm trying to say (and probably leaving myself open for a good flaming for) is that you'll rarely get fair unbiased opinions from anyone on any topic, and especially not people on forums!
But... if you want my opinion... EQ2 is great, have loved every second since launch. The patching is no worse than any other MMORPG I've played (in fact it's a better as it's regular and of short duration). Never needed to use SOE support (touch wood), and I run a 6800Ultra.
If your PC can handle it then I'd recommend it.
Am I going to try WoW as well? Sure am! EQ2 is amazing, but there's nothing wrong with seeing if another game might be that little bit better.
buy it and play free month
if u enjoy it...play
if not...play something else..stupid post anyway
who can tell u if its good or not..alota opinions
Actually my experience with customer service from SoE came from playing EQ for around 3 years and my problems with them off and on during that tent. I also had a friend whose pc with a BFG 6800GT can't run EQ2 without it stuttering. He has emailed SoE about the issue several times and no response. You are lucky and I am glad that you are not having issues with your 6800Ultra, but there are many who are: Confirmed 6800GT stutter issue Not all the fixes work either, Possible 6800 stutter fixes
I do like EQ2 and I think as a mmorpg it has much potential. To me it is still a beta product though that needed a couple to three more months of working out some bugs and server issues before being released. I am just not willing to pay for it yet until those issues are resolved. SoR is even worse.
What are your system specs Jdoki??? What brand of 6800Ultra and driver are you using to play EQ2??? I want to try and get my friends pc to run EQ2 without that freaking annoying stutter problem because he has tried all the suggested fixes. He is running on an AMD socket939 .130nm newcastle core Athlon64 3500+, Abit AV8 board with 1gb of PC3200 Crucial Ballistix ram, BFG 6800GT, and plenty of power with an Ultra X-Connect 500W psu. I apologize for going off topic.
edit: I am going to retry EQ2 after a couple of months and see how it is. I imagine the major bugs and hopefully the server issues with lags and crashes should be fixed by then.
Zaradis, the answer is simple between EQ2 and WoW:
If you want a deep and involved gaming experience where you can cooperate with other players to beat challenges in the world, then go to EverQuest 2.
If you want a faster paced, more casual gaming experience where you can explore the world in shorter gaming sessions and you can compete with other players in PvP combat, then go to World of Warcraft.
Other than the above statements, it's all opinion.
try this site http://www.gamerankings.com/ , some guy recommend it and its great, lots of reviews to check. . Is way better than doing a poll here.
But still eq2 loses there, even if it gets a perfectly fine good score. I dont think you can call every single one of the online gaming sites biased. The total difference is not that big anyway, so neither of the 2 games suck( but apparently wow is liked better)
I dont want you to take this as a flame, but picking one discussion of a forum over thousands of others, i dont think its unbiased.
I really wish that some day the 2 games will game some kind of 12 day free trial or something, like they do in SWG, so if somebody ask WOW Or EQ2 you tell them, go play the free trial and thats it. That would be the end of this flame war.
That wasn't a post aimed at you Rabid, just a 'perspective' post No offense meant if any taken!
My specs are similar:
MSI Neo 2 Plat mobo (939 socket)
Same CPU
2GB Corsair PC3200 RAM
Gainward Ultra 2400 Golden Sample (actually a factory overclocked 6800GT, so not a 'true' 6800Ultra)
480W Antec PSU
Up until about three or four days ago I was running with 1GB, no huge performance gains with 2GB.
Yesterday I was running with Nvidia 66.93 drivers - no problems. Changed to 67.21 and got even better performance - smoother when panning camera (drivers can be found at www.guru3d.com)
Graphics card is normally running at 425/1152 rather than 400/1100 Ultra speeds.
The AGP Aperture size is set to 128MB in BIOS, but I'm gonna give it a go at 256MB, just to see if it starts the 'stuttering'.
In-game detail settings were set to High Quality, then a couple of options turned down a bit - like shadows and flora draw distance. I'm running it in Windowed mode, with desktop resolution of 1280x1024.
The graphics driver in Windows is set to all defaults.
And just to clutch at straws a bit - I have the Cool n Quiet CPU option turned off in BIOS.
No offense taken Jdoki. EQ2 looks good, and it will be a very good mmorpg once they get the server issues fixed. I would recommend people give it a try or wait a month or two and give it a go. That is what I plan on doing if I can find the time to put in.
Thanks for the tips on your specs and settings. I've tried to adjust his setting like is said in the possible fixes for the stuttering issue listed at the EQ2 tech help section in the forums, but it doesn't seem to fix it. I think I'm going to restore the 67.21 drivers and try some of your settings to see if that works.
These are nothing more than my personal opinion so take them for what they're worth.
I played EQ2 for just through the trial month. The game ran great and I had no major problems for lag. The big sink for me came after I got my assassin to level 20. I felt as if I was leveling in reverse and was getting moot in terms of reward for my time. The only thing I got for finally reaching level 20 (I played through to 22 and also got a 16 warrior, and druid) is damage that DID seem a bit higher, but seemed to matter less, as 200 damage now was maybe 2% of the mob's total health and 50 back when was maybe 5%, and the ability to be insta-killed by any mob that got the notion to turn around for a split second.. this usually involved it turning, hitting me for a normal melee hit for around 300 damage (even if it was a mage!) and smacking me instantly with an unanimated 'special move' for another 4-500. Assassins get roughly 700hp at my level and I was a race with slightly higher stamina. Usually these hits were 2 to 3 times my super assassin hits! Pretty depressing.
I only died roughly 25 times during the 22 levels I played the character so it wasn't as if it was a common thing, or that I was just 'tired of dying.' Just the fact that if the NPC decided I was dead, I had no chance..period, to react. Let alone escape. I know this is roughly what happens in every MMO, but it just seemed kindof shoved into the light in EQ2. I never played EQ1 past the newbie lands so maybe its something strictly with the series.
Tradeskilling, while not really -bad- is a whole new story...
Anyway, I made the story longer than it needed to be in hopes that you'd see what I was getting at more clearly. The game looks great, and ran really well on my somewhat average system. The game does have a type of 'epic-ness' to it and is easy to get sucked into. I would whole-heartedly say the game is worth playing for the trial month if not longer for no other reason than having about 60$ to spend. It easily has the potential for being a great game and you may feel the total opposite of how I do in terms of the grind!
EDIT: Adding more good things to it as I seemed like I was bashing more than loving.
My grouping experience is based on me being in a guild that used TeamSpeak and constantly had a group waiting for me. Based on the people I saw screaming for groups for upwards of hours I can imagine that aspect could get pretty annoying. WoW was no better in beta, as a group or friendship seldom outlasts your quest log. You do somewhat need time to sink into a group. But that's any MMO. Based on what I hear its nothing like EQ2. Expect to spend a good 3-4 hours with your group if nothing goes wrong and you're trying to conquer a part of the dungeon.
Grouping was really great, you actually had to have some form of group strategy to keep from getting pummeled (REFER: Me getting insta-killed above.) by every 'group-encounter' of monsters. HOs, while fun to toy with, didn't seem worth the effort in the end. Could have simply been the group failed to take advantage of them correctly. Raids at the moment seemed borked and not worth the time unless you had a big guy to drop and nothing more. The raid window is big and clumsy.
Voice-Overs are something I'll miss. Hearing that one weapon-dealer in Freeport..Blork I think was his name, screaming "You buy cutters and slicers!" from halfway across town in his squeaky, cracking voice was enough to bring you to tears the first time. Some are more annoying though. The Sarge in Fallen Gate is my personal favorite.
Okay, going on 3am, novel finished.
