I've decided to purchase DF on the US server and give the game a go. I have read hundreds of posts that say it's the greatest game ever and the worst game ever and very few are in between. I'm bored of every other MMO out there right now, and $50 isn't really that big of a deal, so here goes.
I'm hoping for the best and expecting the worst. Let's see what happens...

lol, i know what you mean. This game has definitely brought out the best and worst of the community. i'm having fun with it.... and no, its not the worst nor the best its simply fun. I like to try many different MMOs and enjoy most of them for some reason. sadly, now at days... you must love the game i'm playing or nothing!!!!
enjoy it for what it is
I self identify as a monkey.
Ha! Thanks for the good reply :]
You know what's funny? Out of all those posts I've read about the game, I really can't tell you very much about it other than it's FFA PvP with full looting, the UI takes getting used to, and some people macro. Oh, and the most overwhelming advice I see to new players is to join a guild quickly and group up. Makes sense.
I hope the game is fun. If I just get a short bit of fun out of it, it'll be worth the $50 so no biggie there.
Just a few more hours of download, and I'll be logging in to see for myself. Finally...
I knew I loved this game when I learned a guild has complete control of an island. They would kill anyone who came close to it.
You are part of the world, not just a player in it.
Hope you like it.

Funny how you wrapped up my thoughts on trying the game. The only difference is you crossed the bridge and payed for it, while I still haven't been able to convince myself to do it. With Cities XL beta, Aion beta, and Runes of Magic there's so much free it's hard to pay for something that is getting such extreme reviews.
Honestly I think I'd love the game, but so often these smaller titles recoop the development & launch cost . . . then they disappear.

i did the same thing a month ago was just so bored and just bought it.Been having a blast ever since.Really allot going on though and you will need a guild for atleast guidance. It helped me out more then i can even say.I was very lost untill i got into a good guild.Have fun.

Glad you all are enjoying it.
Come back in a month and tell us how it is going. It took me several months to throw in the towel as did others due to lack of anything to do but naked zerg and ganking.
I will definitely do that.
If I get a month of enjoyment out of the game, I feel like it will have easily been worth the cost of the game. Plus, I'll still be able to resubscribe at a later date if the devs happen to make it better later (as most MMOs do).
And that's my worst case scenario.
well the naked zergs are not completly gone, but i must say that they happen less and less, and even if they do zerg naked they are not really a problem as that the wapens and armor have gone through a big change so that its a smaller problem
Welcome aboard! You have the perfect attitude going in to a game like this. Its not the Be-All-End-All that some say and its not a Barely-Beta POS others say. Its just..DF! Just remember that you WILL be Ganked early and often but dont let it get you down. Just keep running to the nearest Bank every so often and you'll be fine. In 4 days playing I've aquired a Small Arsenal of mostly noobish Shortswords and Armor plus a few good items from "other" means (read: Player Tombstones). So if I do get PK'ed all they get are a few throwaway items cause I'm keeping the good stuff in Bank until I find a Clan to run with (and NO I dont do the Naked thing).

Get into a clan as soon as you can. Many clans have crafters who contribute weapons and armor sets for members who lose theirs. Also, you can train skills by fighting with your clan mates without losing alignment and/or going red.
So its been a couple of days, what do you think of Darkfall now?

Haha, you are right. I have been playing (server went down a few minutes ago for maintenance, so I'm back here).
Let's see, what do I think of Darkfall now? Well, to be honest, it's sort of a love / hate relationship right now.
The game itself is really kind of cool -- It has a lot of great mechanics and it's different enough from other MMOs to really stand out from the crowd. It's also somewhat frustrating at times. Here's a run down on everything I've noticed so far:
What I like:
1. No levels. It is so wierd not to be constantly staring at a XP progress bar waiting for the next ding in a MMO. I love it. It really helps to eliminate that feeling of being on a treadmill.
2. There IS direction in the game. Before playing, I read that it's very confusing for new players -- you're just dropped into the world and have to figure out what to do. So far, I've had quest givers that have taken me from area to area and kept me busy. Additionally, reading the quests has helped me to understand a little of the game lore. Yes, I can run off and randomly do whatever, but I haven't had to do that yet.
3. I love the skill ups that come from using skills. It seems like ever action is attached to some skill in game. I understand that some people abuse this system by using macros, but since I don't, I don't really care at this point. It's fun for me.
4. World graphics - they're pretty darned good maxed out. The game world itself is quite beautiful.
5. Aiming attacks. Wow, I remember aiming spells way back when I played Asheron's Call. It was fun then, and it's fun now. Much more challenging than hitting tab to auto target and then mashing a button over and over.
6. Splash damage. This is something that I liked about Age of Conan, and DF has it too. If I swing my sword, I can hit all enemies in front of me. Makes fights a little more interesting because I contantly have to be aware of my positioning and how I'm swinging.
Things I don't like so far:
1. I hate that all my gear drops on death. Everything except my crappy starter sword. It kind of takes the fun out of finding a really cool piece of armor or weapon. I know that I'm going to loose it pretty darned fast, so I don't even get attached to it. Some people say bank it and use it when I'm in a group of friends. Blah! That seems like a weak way to play, so not for me. I wish that only random gear would drop or that there was a way to make certain pieces of equipment protected from dropping by spending big money or something. Ah well, that's the carebear in me I guess
2. Being ganked. It comes with the game, and I understand it, but boy it can really piss me off at times. Especially when it's some guy who is WAY better than me and kills me in a couple swings. I can't outrun him. I can't defend. I'm fodder. I have no desire to pick on people easier than me, and I guess it baffles me that others like doing it. There's no challenge and I have to believe they're just doing it to be annoying.
3. Character animations are really bad. Really bad.
Overall, I don't know how long I'll be with DF. I'm not an avid PvPer and I like to solo / explore quite a bit of my online time. While the exploration in DF is awsome, the solo part is going to get me. Of course I new that this was a FFA PVP game going into it, so I'm not complaining. I just wanted to expand my horizons a little and check the game out.
I really hope other developers are noticing the good things about this game. I'd love to see one take the level free open world design and apply it to a really amazing PvE game or at least one with controlled PvP.
good to see you are having fun.
But really to have friends and a guild ingame will expand your enjoyment tremendously. To have a hamlet or city to call home and defend it, to go out hunting monsters and people with clanmates, to have someone watch your back while you harvest...i'm sure you can understand why being in a good guild will make the DF experience much better.
Sure you can solo and have seen a few soloing, but you need to have a PK mentality and perhaps played UO Felucca or AC Darktide for a long time to understand what i'm saying.
I think what you have said about the community response alone is a good reason to at least see what all the talk is about.
I think its impossible to see if you might like the game by reading community posts when it comes to this game. HOWEVER, reading a few things like the feature list, wikipedia etc might give you a good idea if its a game that is even in your ballpark.
99% of the reasons I decided to get the game was based on reading Wikipeida, the offical website feature list and one user created blog.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

I'm going to echo what other people are saying that joining a clan opens the game up tremendously. I think you can still solo/explore just fine if you join the right kind of clan. About ganking, getting out of the newbie city areas and heading out to a more remote area is your best bet. The nice thing about being in a clan is being able to base yourself out of a hamlet or city and to be able to wreak revenge on your gankers heh. Good luck.
It's this that convinced me to play

Have been playing DF for over a week now, and to be honest, I can't go back to the modern way of MMO's (WoW). Not knocking WoW, have been playing it up till last week and had some amazing fun, but I actually feel like I'm my character in DF... don't know, can't explain it.
haha for me what really consilidated my happyness was the building of the EU server 1st Manowar boat. that video pretty much summed up what I wanted out of PotBS. to sail around, with my crew being real people, actually in the boat not a crappy 'world view' version, pvping and blasting boats. being a real pirate yarr! haha yeah it just made it for me

OP: im glad you are having fun, its not about buying a game and feeling disatisfied and that it was a waste of moolah. keep us updated on your antics!
Playing polished, lag free, feature complete games is carebear. Whining about a game you hate but still play is hardcore man!
That's a great video for giving insight to how large scale fights actually look and feel in the game. The person recording appears to have specialized in Fire Magic, but there are many schools of magery. Excellent video and glad it was able to cut through those discouraging others from trying this amazing game. It's a PvP'rs dream come true.

So how's your Man-o-War coming? Started laying the keel yet ROFLMAO.
You will never have one so give up on the childish dream. The only people that have built ONE in 6 months is a zerg guild that is known for exploits, and cheats from day one of the game.
That being what you need to acquire the material to build such a vessel makes it nothing more then eye candy and not something that most players will ever see much less own or be on before the plug is pulled on this game due to lack of funds.
Man this game just seems to attract people that can't think logically nor have a solid grounding in the real world. I know it is a fantasy game, but really do so many of you live in a fantasty world all the time? Wouldn't want to live your future life.
