Millions of us are Ready, Willing, and Able to experience an MMORPG that returns the 3 Cs to the fold.  An opportunity to recapture the spirit of each of them, without one overwhelming the other.  An appropriate balance, achieved through items, mobs, dungeons, class diversity, class spells, and so forth.

Developers didn't get the memo sadly.

But I agree with you completely, it's been way to long since we've had an mmo such as EQ originally was.

And I am more than ready for one.

  • GorakkhGorakkh Member Posts: 694

It's a funny thing actually, I just recently resubbed to EQ and while the game has many large changes, the community is still one of the best out there. It's been years since I've had the kind of player interactivity, constant grouping, rich content and player congruency that I experienced in UO/EQ years ago and even somewhat still in EQ today.

MMORPG'S of today just don't seem to deliver what we want. And there main components and base design seem to be in a strong disagreement to a lot of us core players. A large problem is the design seems to be based around trying to make the most money at whatever the cost, or atleast it appears that way.

You can never recreate the past. If you try it will always end up with a sick construction.

Also there never were "millions" of players that played these kinds of games and most of those who were back then don't even play anymore.

You are simply falling into the usual trap that happens to many people as they grow up. They remeber their past experiences in a glorified light and think that their current life is not as fun and exiting. They fail to realize its because THEY have aged and changed and blame outside sources for the state of things.

Then they begin to resent the young, thinking they are stupid and simple compared to how THEY were back when they were young and in the end they become the old silly farts they looked down on while they were young.

You see these kind of people everywhere on these boards never ever comming to terms with what they have become and accepting their age and new personality that comes with it.

That is deep, and completely accurate of course.

But it is very very hard to come to terms with this fact.

I pride myself on being fairly clever, and well aware of my personality.

And still I feel like I fall into this trap now and again, and with a couple of beers I dive into it head first.. ;)

"Dude, things were so much better before!"

No, they were not, YOU were different.

    Excellent post mate, thanks.

We need to be reminded of this fact now and then.

I know I've been looking for an MMO that has those 3 Cs. I'm currently playing Ryzom which has a tight-knit, helpful community. The only problem is it's a small community.

I'm hoping MO will be the game I've been looking for.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

Agreed.  I never really though about the "Magic" i experienced in EQ.  But it really was magical.  The MMO community needs a new IP, that has the three C's.  Vanguard tried, and failed.  Now it's time a developer stepped up.  Preferbly one who played or develop EQ itself.

I played Everquest the other week and the world is barren and theres too many crap starting areas. I was walking along around aload of zones and it has the worst level design I've ever seen, it's like they juat shaped the terrain and put a river and some trees down and then put 1 mob in there lol. I also hate all the loading between zones and wonder why they couldn't have just had it seamless with just loading between conts or something.

World of Warcraft has a much better open world but just a shame Battlegrounds ruin it.

The grass was always greener 10 years ago.

But nostalgia is a bugger; where you remember EQ fondly, I recall it as a forced-grouping, timesink-infested grind-a-thon with little to no fun content that required a ridiculous time investment and enabled such inanity as content-blocking, mob-stealing, and the infamous mob training.

The future of the genre doesn't lie in the past; but in the slow and eventual progression away from timesinks/grinds and towards fun and challenging content such as that which TOR is endeavouring to provide; replacing the traditional level grind with multiplayer story-based gameplay and putting the RPG back into the genre.

The problem is WoW came along and with it came countless goons that dont believe in the 3C's, or for that fact even belong in the MMO genre. Now the game devs have thrown the true MMO fans on the back burner selling out to the new crowd because thats where the real big money is at.

You really cant blame the devs. They are out to make the most money that they can. Its a business after all.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

There are young people today discovering MMORPGs who feel now as you felt all those years ago.

Expect them to rattle these boards in discontent in 2011.

Threads such as these have been made for as long as I've been a member of this website. And the sentiment has been expressed for much longer.

Come to terms with it, make your peace and move on.

re-posted this hear, i didn't think people would see it.. and i want people to read it.

I have posted my mmo ideas here in the dev corner. I had to take them down because my team is going to make a small rpg out of it first to break into the industry. If that is successful we are going to make the mmo version and I will tell you first hand sir, the 3 C's will be there.

I am ready for another EQ type of game. A lot of people said they could see the EQ themed. You should see my world map. One thing that has captured the memories of EQ, was simply, what my tag line is for my mmo.. "its an adventure, not a grind."

The mmo we are designing is for a small niche, I am making this game for the passion of this genre and for the players to find a perminent loyal home with the three C's. I am not in it for the money. The revenue will be a perk. Its logging into the world, knowing that your secure with a good community foundation, an an exciting strategic gameplay with diverse content. Let me tell you this.. I originally had 6 world maps and planned for 5 expansions. I made a new pangea map for a single shard world. The new map is calculated into 875 square miles, with 180 zones. And 54 of them are "high level" and yes I played EQ for 5 years.

Yep it's all nostalgia, Everquest never heavily influenced WoW did it? Oh wait it did..
These first 'experiences' things are naff- you don't remember with over-fondness your first rts, rpg, fps, platformer..? The reality is Everquest hooked people because it had solid appeals taken straight from MuDs. Appeals that in a 10year old game no longer look as ravishing but that don't deserve to be wholly neglected in favour of the arcade-game mentality. FFXI showed to an extent some of those appeals can lead to a successful stream of audience.

Why settle for anything less, why keep waiting for the next EQ that's never gonna be?  Go give EQ1 another try and hop on Mayong (new server) if you want to see lots of players, lots of pickup groups, and lots of raids.

I never thought I would play EQ1 again after quitting back in 2004.  I've been back in it now for 5 months, and it's been some of the funnest time I've had in the recent years.  Your mileage may vary, but stop waiting, hop in and get playing

While it is true we do change as we get older, you can factor that in to your decision making. It is possible to discern how much of your memories of the past are nostalgia. You just need to have a good memory. :)

I can remember us complaining about many of the issues that WoW rectified when it launched. Subsequently I then complained about those new solutions. Issues like speed of travel, soloing content, difficulty of crafting.

That does not mean there is not a balance that can be struck, going back to the ‘good old days’ is not the solution. But rebalancing difficulty with ease, bringing back some of the old tools we lost, re using some of the ones already in MMO’s, this all can be done.

History teaches us perspective, age does too if you maintain a degree of self awareness.

Actually it's totally rediculous. Is this what developers tell themselves? My god they really have gotten God complexes.I Like how history was completely avoided, and replaced with adults grew into adults, and are unable to realise what their own preferences are. Virtual World and community included in an MMO is a childs toy that we havnt realised we grew out of yet. OK there Microtransactions for costumes aimed at 12 year olds is the mmo future.

It read more like what  developers feel, yet projected on to us, as if we are to blame for their failures. Developers sold out. Period. Now look at them run away and hide.

I still pine for the yesterdays of gaming which were all of a massive five years ago for me, I wonder if a little of it is that as games naturally evolve under pressures of budget or player base they just simply move away from what we as individuals want from that game but habit keeps us coming back for more until one day we realise we're entirely sick of it. Then when we look back we selectively recall the great bits .. like ex-boyfriends but in reverse.

The magic of games for me will always be more from the community and less the actual mechanics of the game design, the larger the group of people you have believing in an environment the easier it is to believe it along with them.

There weren't millions playing EQ back in the day and there aren't millions looking to recreate that pathetic excuse for a MMO, by TODAYS standards.  Want proof?  Look at how well received Vangaurd was when it released.  It basically recreated much of what EQ was like.  But people weren't interested because horrible bugs &  lousy content isn't what people look for in a MMO today.

Nostalgia is such a ^%&$*#, right=)  You know what?  People playing their first MMOs now are experiencing what you did back in in 1998.  Amazing right?

Innovation isn't forced grouping, loads of bugs, exploits, tedious grinds, simplistic heavily limited classes, kill stealing, trains, and lousy art design. Tradition sucks by todays standards.  Ever drive a Model T every day to work?  No AC, no seatbelts, no powersteering, no radio, no airbags, no cup holders, ect.  Great to look at and recall the days when everyone had them.  But now, really lousy to drive...much like EQ.

You can't create community.  It just happens.  Stick to niche MMOs.  WOW had a fantastic community back when it first started.  But slowly as more and more people started playing, you had to contend with the asshats.  Thats life.  Nothign last forever.  EQ is better left in the past as a memory.  That "FEELING" isn't happening again for those who first experienced it with their first MMO.  Its over.

While it is true, things often look better with the passage of time.

I wouldn't want to return to painful corpse runs, camping certain boss mobs for half a day hoping they spawn, and horrendous horse rides of 20-30 minutes just to get to my hunting spot. (though I did catch up on my reading on them)

But I do enjoy games where dying matters, and people actually try to avoid it rather than plunge into every battle with sword swinging.

I like clan housing, (but not player), I like immersive worlds, and I like some downtime between my fights so I can get to know my groupmates.  I like some quests, but I don't want an entirely quest driven experience.

I like games like EVE, but can do without  the WOW  model.  (and while WOW sprang from EQs, it is most definitely not EQ1.)

I'm looking for something new and fun, not something old and fun.  Maybe TOR will be that game, maybe one of the many niche games coming out. Doesn't matter, I enjoy the games I play now and look forward to the new ones on the horizon.

Like the other guy said on the first page, the developers didn't get the memo. Maybe we could re fax it over a few million times every year for them to realize that we want our old school gen mmorpg's back into the game without this new wannabe innovation crap that keeps coming out these days that are flopping faster then mcdonalds cheese burgers.
