AO or SWG

I wan't to start playing a MMORPG ( my first ). I really liked the SWG trial and was going to by the game next week. But now that AO is free the first year I am thinking about starting to play AO. Which one do all you pro think is the best one of those two?

yea, AO is free but u'll soon realize that the expansions are way better, u'll just end up paying monthly anyway. Swg is run by SOE, for those of u that dont know, SOE are a bunch of money sucking morons who couldnt bake a cake without it having bugs or balance issues.....But that doesnt make swg a bad game, its actualy extreamly good, u just cant mind bugs or money sucking morons...

i would go with AO for a while and play it free, if you like it buy the expansions and pay monthly. SWG is pretty bad they screwed up the PvP horribly, and you can max out most of the professions in a few months. i did 23 in about 4 months of play, and never opened the jedi slot thats why i got pissed and quit, and it got pretty boring also.

Then again being able to do things quickly in SWG doesn't really have to be a bad thing. That could actually be what people are looking for. To log in if they are short on time, advance and then log out or have that feeling for long advancement even if they only spend a few months in the game. I know I never plan on making a long time commitment to a game when I start to  play it. If I can advance fast I tend to feel I'm getting my money worth out of the game since I'm seeing more and experiencing more of it then when compared with a game that it takes time to level and explore. If I quit after a few months I might feel cheated.

I just find it funny and well silly sometimes that everyone thinks maxing out fast is a bad thing. Granted each person would feel differently about that but why is that always presented as a bad thing instead of simply a thing that happens in the game?

I've been an AO gamer since launch. And of course my first reaction is that you should go with that. BUT...since AO now have a very dense plot it is kind of tough to start up with. Be prepared to face alot of confusion. But if you can take that and learn as you go - the rewards will be plenty.

If I were you I would look into WoW of some other newly launched MMOG.

Since this is to be your first MMORPG and UNLESS money is no object, I would strongly suggest going with AO first.   Everybody has preferences - period - and finding out what you do and do not like for free is a good thing.  You can ALWAYS pick up SWG later - it isn't going away anytime real soon.  After a month or two on free AO, you will likely have come to some conclusions about what you like or don't like in an MMORPG and can better judge.  If money is NO object, then flip a coin - both games are ok (pros and cons to each).

Why is it a bad thing?  Well, there are several reasons (interrelated).  First, one must realize that there are precious few MMORPGs (particularly if one prefers a certain genre of MMORPG) that come along every year.  So at the outset someone who WANTS to play an MMORPG regularly has very few options.  Secondly, most (if not all) MMORPGs to date have little or no real content and playability at end game - so once one gets to max level (or whatever), one has little or nothing to do that is motivating or fun.  I know most games give lip service to this topic, but none have it.  So now, IF one chews up and spits out the early content (leveling) of an MMORPG, then one is left with needing to move on because that MMORPG is unlikely to have much in the way of high end content to amuse one.  Since there are very few MMORPGs coming out each year, this leaves the MMORPG fan with nothing to play.  The core concept of any MMORPG has been (and should continue to be) that players will play for a very long time - continuing to be amused and challenged.  Thus, getting to top level (or even close) too fast IS a bad thing.

You obviously have NO clue at all - you cannot even understand what someone has written.  I did NOT say AO was a good game - nowhere in there did I say that.  It IS a fact that other people like it - period.  More importantly, what I DID say is that unless money is no object at all, then it is GOOD that one learn what one might or might not like for free - thus AO is preferable over SWG - BECAUSE HE CAN LEARN FOR FREE!

There was supposed to be a free 10 trial for SWG offer by Fileplanet starting Dec. 17th but no sign of it yet.

They did a 14 day trial for SWG before, and I quit at day 5. It's SOOOOOOOOO boring as you really do max out any of the combat professions in no time at all, whereas with the artisan professions you need only to use a WIDELY AVAILABLE aliasing program to do everything for you. AO on the other had I can say I'm on day 3, and I'm loving every second of it. It's a refreshing change of pace for an MMO, though there's a couple of things that bug me and I wish could be done differently, overall the game is solid. Not to mention FREE, provided you don't need the expansions. Personally because of their GENEROUD discounting for yearly subscriptions (like 45% off) I plan on getting it with the expansions for me and my wife when I get my taxes back. However, test out AO first. It's free, feels VERY similar to SWG, except you know, you have to WORK for your stats and levels and gear ;)

SOE makes decent games that appeal to nerds. Their customer service is run by jocks who bully nerds. Wonder why SOE sucks so bad...

well it really depends on what u want ppl always complain about games thats just how it is when a game has a long "grind" ppl complain that its too long slow and hard to do anything in a game and if a game has a fast grind ppl say its boring and too easy BUT i play SWG so i know more about it what the game lacks in grinding it makes up in community.....if u really want to do good in the game ur gonna need friends or a guild to play with there are places like the DWB where u need like 20+ ppl to beat it or get to the end and it has some really good loot in it so pretty much games arent all about how fast mastering stuff is it depends all on what u want from a game fast mastering slow mastering.....ive never played AO but i was going to try it out since its free so i cant give u any advice/info on that
    hope this helped u out

If I wan't to  be a crafter will I still have to join a guild or can a play alone?

You can try on your own, but getting the resources for the high quality level craftings you will need a bunch of friends to help you out. Otherwise you will know what to do when the resources shifts ::::39::

And the available lots you have will also be a problem, the guild I was in shared the lots between the members that needed them. A fighter don't need 10 lots, while a crafter realy needs a whole lot more for his industry machine.

I have played AO with the 14 day trial from mmorpg and have decided not to pay for it. And now that it is free I won't go play it either, because if I will play the game again I want to play as a shade. And that is a shadow expansion profession, so no free play then for me.

I downloaded AO recently because of the free trail. I like the enviroment and atmosphere but the gameplay and interface seem poor. Although this could be related to the fact that I have been playing World of Warcraft constantly and I find it to be awesome.
