looking for advice on my new build. ive gotten great info/reviews from this site so i figued this would be the place to come for some advice on my new build. any feedback would be great and appreciated. heres what i got so far:
AMD Phenom II x4 2.8GHz Corsair XMS3 4GB RAM Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P Killer K1 NIC Asus Radeon HD 4890 1GB or Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 x2 2GB
not trying to break the bank w/ this build. im hoping this set up to run games at max settings. any recommendations? thanks in advance
Ok well i was making a full comp deals 08/xx/09 but ill copy paste what i have so far (got board)
Power supply - best deal atm an 700w OCZmax w/ 86% eff. and only one 6+2 and one 6 pin (which is fine unless you have want to run two big brand new video cards sli'ed, in this case look at optional psus at bottom of thread). $90 with a $30 rebate = $60
Should be concidered to buy - Tuniq 750w two 6 pin and two 6+2 pin, i have one of these and for the price its unbeatable. $120 w/ $40 rebate = $80 (This really is a wonderful buy).
My favorite psu a 750tx (watt) corsair with FOUR 6+2 pins a greater than 80% eff. with 8, yes 8, sata plugs and in a review i read about a year ago they pushed it to 900 watts and it was stable but loud as hell. $120 w/ 20 rebate = $100
To be honest the tuniq is the best buy here but i have been known to use a psu for 9+ years, but for a savings of $20 get the cheaper one (OCZmax 700 at $60).
If your trying to to break the bank toss out the AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE (its wonderful no doubt for for 1/2 the price you can get )
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor $120 - ok so why do i like this cpu becuase its cheap, it overclocks well, and it preforms very well for the money.
Why this well the 955 be kicks its butt no doubt but once you OC both the 955 doesn't double out preform it. Also the 3 thread are nice as most games are 2 threads and 1 extra will help you manage the rest of the junk thast goign on with your computer, as well as, the fact that some games are 3 threaded and 4 threaded (in this case the 955 is gonna eat this cpu alive, but so would many cheaper intels and amds, the real issue is HOW do i need processing power and that is almost always in 1 or two threads making this cpu a deal).
But if you want the 955 get it it will last (you can always get a good , but not great video card now and geta better oen in two years and that cpu will still be fine).
As other have said the kill n1c is a waste.
Memory - Stick with DDR2 (CHEAP, its the cost of a ddr3 mebo that also makes DDR3 just not worth it yet).
I choose Patriot Viper 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) , because its cheap ($68 w/ $25 rebate = $43) and becuase its good i have it on 4 sysytems in my house atm (nm 3 and two with coursair dommis, reguardless its on my main system).
Both of these are the same but one is green and doesn't included shipping, but both work out to be the same cost.
And as far as video cards go id get a HD4870 or an geforce260 216core. Becuase the hd4890 maybe good but in most reviews i don't see an extra $60-70 value in it (but if you have been saving otherwise maybe you could get this instead). And dispite what people say i have played and tried a ton of games and ati have quadruple the issue that nvidia has (this is without driver dropping/crashing). Me and my friend have stopped play a few mmos for months until the game company fixed what ever issue was happening or the patched fixed it , but i know that at that time he (my friend) was the one with an ati (and he still had one until about 5 months ago) and well he swears that he will never buy one agian and honestly until they start puttign more effort into support im gonna adopt that view point.
(As there are still old game out there that ATI users simply cannot play due to lack of support , omega drivers helps for a few of them, but those have been discontinued).
That being said for more big games you'll never have issues for long as a lot of people would be upset.
Good brand names for cards are:
ATI : HIS (the best for them no doubt), asus, XfX, then if you have too (gigabyte and sapphire).
Nvidia: BFG, EVGA, XFX, (and if you have to gigabyte and asus)

i like those PSUs and have acutally looked at one, the OCZ, is on my newegg basket right now. i want to try and stay w/ DDR3 and the 955 BE is b/c i dont want to have to upgrade this build for a long time. any $200+ GPU is going to do me fine for a few years in games. nothing out there right now is even needed for the cream of the crop GPU so i want my rig to be prepared for, i hope, the next 2-3 generations of games. i will more than likely OC everything down the road as the next upgrade.
if ive looked at this the wrong way i am all ears for other advice/info. its all been great so far. i still got a month till i intend to start ordering hardware.

The cool thing about building a computer is the choices are yours to make, so do what you want of course. The HD4850 and 70s are wonderful cards for their prices. The 955 is a good deal as it WILL LAST. videos cards outdate themselves to fast that buying the bigest and best is normally a waste. (x-fire and sli have changes this a small amount but not much).
