PvP is the main reason I play online games. I won't touch an MMO that doesn't have it. After that, I'd say that immersion is a big factor for me. Ambiance, realism, npc interaction, etc... all have to feel right. Also, character customization is a huge factor (and I'm not just talking about looks).
Things I absolutely hate are grinding and gear based, cookie-cutter game mechanics. I can pretty much work around anything else.
Not me, I like endings, some games like Daoc and Guildwars have an ending.
I like to spend time with fun people, whatever they are my IRL friends or just fun people from other side of the globe.
I like the co-operative play.
But mostly I like the fct that I don' have to spend a month to get some friends to play a certain time and then everybody jumps of the campaign like in pen and paper RPGs.
To turn it around, I however don't like the fact that MMOs are so like eachother, pen and paper RPGs varies a lot both in systems and in worlds but almost all MMOs uses basicly the same system and are rather close to eachother in most ways.
There's always something to do. The reliance on players to create content (via wars and politics) allows for a massive amount of replayability with extreme challenge and very little repetition. In the event that there are no wars going on in your general area, you can go out and explore, read the lore, build your character, and increase your stockpile of equipment by killing monsters, crafting, or trading.
Developing my toon. This development must have multiple goals. Examples of different goals include levels, crafting, improving statistics, gear, quests. It cannot be be just improving levels and gear. An example of a one dimensional character development would be endgames where the only objective is gear.
yeah i really love exploring in rpg games... something about the scenary makes it very interesting but most importantly, pvp.. loves facing other players in any game... makes it a lot more interesting. Also, PvE is good too... love seeing and fighting bossess to see how strong they really are in the game
large scale pvp battles, less grinding, more things you can do aside from grinding (crafting, mini games, etc.), unique gameplay and also a killer soundtrack

I like exploring new areas I must be able to solo
Above all, the gameplay must be fun.
Exactly! I also like the feeling of being part of a community. The especially intense arguments concerning who would win in a fist fight, Picard or Kirk, really make my day.
For me it's being part of a bigger whole, connecting with friends and making new ones in guilds. I also like the loot, I love levelling up and just collecting new items/gear/rares...there's something about that which is priceless - especially when you get a unique item.
I am also big on team play, so any MMO with PvE and cooperative trading and so on, that's great in my book.
Not really, the real reason for me has to be player affirmation. When a funny moment happens, you can't share it in a single player game, but in a mmorpg it is possible to share that experience with others. When many people perceive the same event, that event is in fact much more meaningful than just one person witness it alone. it can be about anything whether it is good or bad.
yeahhh! grouping with other players in the game is very exciting while battling those strong bosses - making new friends and sharing your experience of mmo to them - and yes i agree, amazing pvp, less grinding, enjoyable soundtrack, and an interesting storyline win my vote - i hate reading those long storyline when they can condense it to half the length!
Phat lootz, hunting phat lootz for lesser players, interacting with many people, large open land spaces with much to do in them, player cities, player driven economies, automated merchants and shops, politics, etc etc. Basically, everything wow isn't with the exception of wow's spectacular gameplay. Thus, this genre is basically dead to me since it's nothing more than dumbed down wow clones anymore.

To be a little OT here, didn't you just mention all MMOPs except Guildwars????
Group based pvp. I like getting a few friends together forming a solid team and tearing shit up.
Sucks losing, but you can't win them all. hehe

PvP, roleplay and community which MUDs do better.

I like grouping with people, RP, open world PvP. Quests with cut scenes, I get tired of reading a damn scroll popup. Awesome main storyline.
Because I grew tired of playing singleplayer games.
I'm just cool like that.
Exploring mostly, not being boxed in.

A good and balanced PvP, based on players skills
