Large scale battles?

jakojakojakojako Member Posts: 332

I've been watching this game for a while, and obviously a HUGE part of an open pvp mmo is the large-scale battles (70+ people in the same area fighting).

Looking again at the screenshots, this game has some of the best graphics i've ever seen in an mmo and it really makes me wonder if this game will be able to handle 70+ people in the same area fighting without MAJOR FPS drops. Now, obviously you'll likely be able to turn off shadows and such to make the fps better, but even doing that, i'm not sure my computer (which is pretty good imo) will be able to handle large scale fights in this kind of game.

Anyone hear/see/know anything about how they plan to handle these large scale battles?

They aren't planning on it.  This game is built around the idea of small skirmishes.  If you see a fight of more than 20 people in the same area at the same time, it's most likely going to involve guild territory control.  I'd be surprised to see battles larger than that every day.

With that said, part of the testing in beta will involve server stability.  I'm sure they'll put as many people in one spot as they possibly can until the server crashes.  Just don't expect them to be able to handle 300 people at once at any point in the near future, or ever.

From what I have read and with my intuition, MO will not be able to handle 70 plus in the same area. Since siege, will not be implemented on release, they will have time to optimize and handle these types in situations in open field pvp battles.

So, time will tell how they will handle these type of issues.

If I was SV, I would use a softcap system on large scale battles.

At this point there are no features that will encourage large scale battles (eg. sieges) but large battles between clans are bound to happen, at this point we dont really know how the server will handle too many people but we will soon know once they fix the issues with the beta and people start logging in roughly in the same spot we should see at least a couple of hundred people pvping in the same area because thats what they are testing, UE3 is a pretty solid engine and the Atlas technology they have developed is really cutting edge and it will only get better.

So in short, there are no mechanics to encourage large battles, but it will happen between guilds sooner or later if they implement sieges or not, they already said sieges will be in at some point so expect large battles at some point, I would rather they take one step at a time really and polish the core before aiming too high all these things can be implemented if they make all of their core solid and fun.

Just from a technical standpoint. 70+ is more likely than not possible(high end graphiccards assumed). Just look at BF2 or other such games. But are battles possible with more than 200+ or even more? Most likely not.

    There are two bottlenecks:

    - network traffic(object ID, coordinates and moving vector from every object, projectiles included in range radius of transmission)

    - graphic powers or to simplify it, polygon counts from every character in range(radius of view)

Network traffic is not dependent on the polygon number, or how nice graphic looks, but is connected with hitboxes and movable objects.

Graphic power is not connected to hitboxes but for how graphic looks. So your question is especially directed to graphic power, and with it, it is not really interesting that MO is a multiplayer game or even a MMO. All games have this graphical limitations.

The network traffic on the other side is just a bottleneck for multiplayer games and especially massive multiplayer games.
