I've played a lot of MMO's that are PVP type games and disliked all of them. But I really enjoyed Dark ages of Camelot and Warhammer online that give you the option of when and where to PVP if you are in the mood.
Is Aion more of a PVP or RVR MMO? Mainly I like to PVE with a little PVP action thrown. Is AION for me?
A little background. I've tried just about every MMO that looked interesting but only played EQ1, EQ2, Daoc, SWG and Warhammer longer than 6 months and EQ1, Eq2 and Daoc for more than 4 years each.

You will get ganked once in awhile playing Aion especially if you are running solo. Now, in a good strong legion, you will have very few issues with camping / griefing. I do highly recomend joining a legion. Once you hit the Abyss, the system favors RvR rather than gankage.
Aion has been fun so far. Good luck and have fun.
If you avoid the Abyss when you don't feel like PvPing you should be ok.
You just keep an eye out when a rift has open in some the PvE areas.
It's more RvR focused kind of how DAoC was, i imagine most of the pvp action will take place in the Abyss for keeps.
However with rift portals enemy players can come over to your side of the world, so while for the most part you should be safe in your realms PvE areas, theirs always that chance a portal opened and their are enemy players running about.
Just wait for FF14, it's not that far ahead. <1 year to go! Has just what you're looking for. In the meantime though, Aion should be alright.
Thanks for the tips. I think I'll try it after all.
To the OP, after playing this CBT5 DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. The server I was on was completely shutdown by ganking in the Asmodian zone. For the entire weekend. There was a particular legions griefing non stop and in addition there was an etire raid of level 30s running around the zone for a good 8 hours camping all known spots and cholepoints. It is hard for me to believe NCSoft let a game in this condition out. I am truly astounded that they let this game be exploited to this degree.
I had thought the rifting had reasonable limits but it does not, not at all. If there is a population unbalance or a Legion that want to make the lowbies miserable they can make the game literally unplayable. With the crazy chokepoints and lack of content one side was able to completely halt the level advancement of the other side, which then gives them PvP superior ority. Of course they won't have any competition in CBT6 but then again locusts like that never care about that.
Seriously do not play this game.
gestalt11,
Didn't you or others try and group together to fight back? That is the idea in a RvR game after all.
When the game goes live I'd expect people to gang together and fight back. There will also be legions hunting enemy legions as well as grudges build up between the 2 sides. In beta tests its sometimes hard to get the right impression of true gameplay due to level caps etc and in your situation it sounds like you met a legion that had level capped itself and wanted to see if they could own the oppositions starting area. I'd guess they were looking for a fight but never really got it.
Teamwork is your friend in this game

I smell a troll, wasnt the max level in CB5 level 25? so how could they be level 30? and there were new servers that they put up where everyone started brand new from level 1, I find it pretty hard that someone would make it from 1 to 30 in 3 days and still have time to camp for 8 hours. Thats assumeing you could level up to lvl 30 if it wasnt capped at lvl 25 for the beta event
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Max level in CB5 was 30. They don't wipe between closed beta events, my server had plenty of level 30's.
As far as it goes if an entire legion is holding up your server you should have had banded up or had a friendly legion help drive them out. Although it does amaze me to hear that a legion can cause such an effect, truly astounding I think.
The sort of thing you're talking about will probably happen, but I don't think it will be frequent enough. The max level was 30, and I'm sure there was more PvP going on in the lvl 20+ zone than the abyss. Later on once the penalties for ganking lowbies in their own teritory gets put in, alongside of the max level being 50 and players being more interested in getting AP I think it will certainly slow down a lot of the "ganking".

I haven't played AION yet, but this actually sounds great. I love it when events like this can happen. This means there is a basis for fighting back. A lot more meaningful than just killing npc spawns.
I can't see the problem here at all !! But thanks for getting me even more interested in the game..

It sounds like me and you are alot alike. I like the option to pvp when I "feel" like pvping. So far I have had a blast in Aion and have pre-ordered the CE. I have found Aion to be far from groundbreaking, but extremely stable, beautiful graphics, and polished gameplay.

Then you are not like the OP really. But either way do not mistake what i am saying. There was no real PvP. There was no real option to fight back. Level 20s can't do jack against level 30s unles its about 3-4 on 1. If there are significant numbers of level 30's in a Rift zone, ie. no Balaur to even things out, and only a similar level 20s there then you are basically screwed.
You do about 25% your normal damage and in comparison you are lacking a large majority of your signature abilities. Many decent CC attack are granted around level 25, in addition much better gear and stigmas as well.
It is like night and day. There is no basis for fighting back. My 4 year old nephew tries to scrap with me, but I don't consider it "fighting back", I am a full grown man with decades of fighting/grappling experience.
If you are on a server that has a significant population imbalance then, potentially, rifting will lead to serious grief and shutdown of zones. Your only option will be to call in the higher levels out of the Abyss which is probably what they would want anyway since they have the numbers advantage. I have seen this happen in other games for hours on end on PvP servers. Eventually a higher level comes along, but I have often seen this take hours.
If you are fine with that then great have fun. But I don't think the OP is and don't be under any impression you will have a ghost of a chance against a level 30 SM or Assassin as a level 20 anything. A level 30 SM can probably kill 3 levels twenties of any level. That SM probably has the same amount of CC abilities as all three level 20s combined and will probably resist most of theirs. My level 21 Chanter can barely even hit a level 30 SM, literally they dodge every other blow and each hit is 25 hp instead of 100hp damage. All my spells get resisted, that includes stuns on melee attacks assuming that even hits.
Early polls indicate a possible 60/40 split in favor of Elyos. There will almost certainly be vastly lopsided servers. If you think the low side will be "fighting back" in any place other than the Abyss you might want to think again.

Why is a professional cage fighter posting on a MMO forum?

I am not a professional, I am a not as well in shape amateur ;P
In the server I played everytime I've seen a big group of Elyos, we would quickly form a PUG repel group and zerg them out. It's that simple, and should be even easier when global chat channels are added (without it we are reduced to shouting, random inviting whoever is nearby, most of them would gladly enjoy the group PvP and looking for people through the search function). Rifts have limited usages, so there is a limit of how many invaders there will be until a new one appears.
There will be changes to rifting PvP though, after a number of kills you will not be able to use rifts or use kisks (portable obelisks) for a period of time, plus your position will be broadcast to all players in the map, and when killed nearby players will receive a buff, the one who dealt the last blow will also have his name on a broadcast.
As the Abyss is huge, it was pretty harder to counter big groups there without a global channel (plus, only a limited playerbase reached level 25+), however there were many strong NPC groups we could stick with in some areas.
It seems pretty obvious this, even in concept, will make a huge hit on griefing these non-abyss maps. Still, hopefully they will have the update live on servers on CB6 or the Open Beta, that is, if they want people to have an impression of what the game will REALLY be, there are 3 major patches that are yet to be deployed on beta servers and are promissed to be there at release, but it wouldn't be good marketing to not show what the game will truly look like on the Open Beta.
If grouping in MMOs for PvP (PUGs or Legion groups) is something impossible for you, then I'm sorry, Aion is not for you.
Well in the future I will be rich and even more handsome than I am now. So if you know any hot chicks let them know that they should gimme their number and start putting out for me now.
I have played in the beta and on the chinese servers. I still think it funny how ppl keep talking about polish and such in a game that has been out for months just not in the EU and NA. Fom my experences is if you dont like PVP then you will LEARN TO HATE AION. Aion is pretty much PvP everywhere one you get to 2o or so. The rifts will keep groups of enemies in your area. Aion forces you forthe most part to have to go around in groups or be ready to run often. Aion is not bad if you want PvP but I would be leary if you want a more PvE experence
Thanks for all the posts. I've done some more research and though I have already bought the game since my last post I'm not sure if I will continue this game past level 20 considering all the Gank talk I've been seeing on this forum and others.
Will Aion turn out to be PVE and getting ganked every once in awhile or getting ganked most of the time with a little PVE ? I think that will be the reason if I will last past level 20.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy PVP and the Abyss sounds fun but I REALLY don't like getting ganked when all I want to do is level in peace with only PVE mobs to worry about.
