that is uncool. get a key but you can't play. Seems servers are only up two days a week and yesterday was one of them. friday is the next day. weird kind of beta i have to say. Not sure if they are going to have plenty of beta days but i am used to be able to play/test for weeks not two days here and two days there.

Beta doesnt start till like Aug 17th, learn to read before you bitch.

actually that is a smart move, they increase hype and make you really want to play
It's beta. They don't owe you a server. Most games don't have their beta server up all the time. They usually monitor it when it is up, so it's usually only running when devs are able to spend time doing this.
They are developing the game. Don't expect full play time in beta.

OPEN BETA doesn't start untill Aug. 17. I believe what the other post is talking about was the recent CLOSED BETA keys. Some of which were released today here.
If thats the case then sorry about my first post but , I think the so called closed beta keys arent really closed beta keys, there for the same event that fileplanet, and a few other sites are giving out which starts Aug 17th. Same as pre-orders dont get to play till 17th, remember its a beta not the end of the world.

To the OP - if it's a closed beta key you have you should have received details about where to register the key etc. At that site there will be details about when the closed beta servers are open. Check it every day or so.
As with most games in closed beta, the servers aren't open 24/7.
this is for closed beta not open. and i am not bitching it would be nice to know where the server are up and when they are down. also it would be better to release keys before the beta is going to start. I saw it was yesterday. I was one of the first to get a key today. Meaning non have been able to play today. Thats all i am saying.
there should be details on the site once you have used your key mate.
Waiting For:Archeage
current:Guild Wars 2
past: EQ, EQ2, Planetside, SWG, Matrix Online, Ultima Online, WoW, CoH/CoV, Tabula Rasa, Pirates of the Burning sea, AoC, Eve Online, Startrek Online.Fallen Earth, Champions Online, SWTOR
Any key you find out there from an event or a site it is for CLOSED BETA which will last till the 16-17th when the OB starts where you will only be able to play if you have PRE ordered the game.
Thats how it is from all the info i have read on the web and by registrering my self. If your key is for closed beta you will know 100% because the procedure is diffrent than that of a regular key registration.
Go read the Preview Forums to know when is the next play test.
I don't find this kind of testing any strange since basically most MMOs in Closed Beta do open the servers at certain times (Aion). Also remember that Cryptic only has ONE (1) server for the game (even after release it will be 1 server) so I assume that the reason they need the server closed its so that can work on it without having Beta testers running around.
Simple:
- close beta = testing/bugging fixing/balancing the game
- close beta != free playtime
- open beta = freeplaytime, enjoy it while it last! (as the game shouldnt have a free trial for months)
I've been in beta for a few months now, and Champs Online hardly has much play time lol. I've been in many.... many betas, and yes I can say that champs hardly lets you play. It IS a fun game though, and I'm sure they have their reasons. They've definitely updated a lot from when I first got in haha.
Closed beta play tests are on Fridays and Wednesdays, the rest of the week they are doing development.
If you took the time to read the beta forums you'd know this.
Sounds to me they are wise to how most ppl treat any Beta's "Try before you Buy".
The majority of those that either get free keys or who get in late for any beta are more likely just those that want to play the game and not genuinely test it for bugs, I include myself as one of those ppl, but in this case I haven't applied for the beta or gotten a free key, I want to play CO from scratch and keep that free feeling rather than realising I've been in the starting zone a hundreds times already through beta.
Just to clarify.. I understand exactly what beta is, and I do my share of reporting. The fact is if they want you to test out lvl 40 content, which they've recently been stressing. They really need to allow time to GET to lvl 40 lol.
All this would be true if it wasn't for the fact that the Devs would just "Boost" characters to the required lvls they need and port them to the areas that needed players in, thats how it's normally done, waiting for testers to lvl up normally in a focused Beta test and one that only operates on certain days means it would take far too long.
the giveaways are beta keys not open beta keys but im sure beta keys will be used for open beta to theres a test tommorrow w starting at 10 am pst its a weekend test yay
