"The developer might have dreamt that player characters would get better at casting magic missiles by shooting at enemies and monsters, but in reality everyone seems to be training their magic skills by blasting away at houses, trees and rocks constantly. Because everytime you use an ability you improve your skill, wether you shoot at a dragon or a brick wall. And since Darkfall Online is all about personal power and player versus player-combat building skills quickly is a key issue, requiring you to do meaningless tasks like shooting thousands of arrows at rocks or blasting spells into bushes for hours to increase your skills."

I have to be honest. That is something I really don't like. It happens in all sandbox games. It happened in UO and SWG that I know of. People always try to find ways to cheat around the system and then you have the people that feel cheated and feel the need to cheat also just to keep up.
I would like to see something along the lines of Dummies for sword play, Targets for Bow and maybe like meditation for magic skill gain. You can beat on Dummies all you want and have to keep them repaired. Same with targets for target practice. and for magic. Well if you think about it, the current way makes sense. Just you use magic shooting all over like a wild man and you get better. why shouldn't we be able to paint a target on a tree and shoot at it for practice? It's like that in real life.
I'm not saying I endorce what people are doing. But I'm not going to lose sleep over it eather. We need to look for the solution and not at the problem. (Thanks Lord Rahl)
For instance they could impliment skill degrading. Where if you get your skill to 30 and you don't ever use it or keep active at it, it drops 10 points to 20. Maybe it takes a quarter of the time to get back to 30 (you never really forget how to ride a bike, but you might need a refresher.
I think this method of training, which was quite prevalent, is not viable anymore. You must have a target to receive the skill increment. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Strix you are correct, the OP doesn't know what he is talking about and quoted an outdated quote.
That's correct Strix. The OP is referencing a review from two months ago.
In response to the changes, most guilds have created what they call Blood Walls, where players stand there and let others target them for skill ups. This has its limitations, but to the extent it works, it is a pretty lame way to raise skills. I use it very rarely and prefer to skill up on mobs and real pvp. My skill levels in game prove my method is actually far more effective than the "Blood Walls", but its a competitive game and understandable why players would try to find and use what they can to advance skills.

Yeah, now you dont shoot random stuff in the air.
You cast debuffs on passerbys and offensive spells on the bloodwall.
Yay game!
is this what trolls call a fail?
Hint to all the failtrolls:
Stop complaining about issues that were fixed months ago and focus on real problems:
insane amounts of grinding and macroing.
wait so the cheaters have their skills maxed out and now the common player is gimped beacuse they can't catch up?
what a fail of a game lol
Can it be fixed? If I have a friend, we can beat each other in turn and max out skills, can we? Just do it in towns or safer zones but out of laser tower.
Even if we kill each other, so long as we won't loot each other, does it matter? If we go naked and carry only a crap non starter weapon, does it matter if we got ambushed and looted?
No.
So the big improvement in DF would be beating a tree using starter weapon --> beating naked friend using crappy non starter weapon. Woo, big deal.
Yeah, whats the big deal..? People's been harping @ Aventurine about that exact same thing since beta... (8 months now).
Those game mechanic will never change, the game has little complexity or matches the secod-by-second complexity of classic FPS games like COD, Battlefield, Counterstrike, etc. The whole development of this game is ass-backwards, nothing about this game fits properly. Amature hodge-Podge game.
Clan vs Clan.. or sieging .... big deal.! Did that for 3 years in DAOC, Planetside, Shadowbane, etc...

The OP has no idea and is misleading forum visitors. Whats quoted is not true and was not true since AV took care of it with a early patch.

$OE - eternal enemy of online gaming
-We finally WON !!!! 2011 $OE accepted that they have been fired 2005 by the playerbase and closed down ridiculous NGE !!

Lol, people are trying to exploit any game. The only different one is Guildwars and that is just because their boss allows exploits (the way GW is built up means it is no big deal, and Strain seems to think it is funny to compete his wits against the playerbase).
But you are right, exploiting like this sucks. I think the best way to award combat skills in a MMO is that you handled it like you handles loot. The player gets the skillup just as he gets the loot after he killed the monster, and if he used several skills he gets the lowest or the one he used most. Heck, you could even have special skills that you could need or greed in a group. You probably have to take away the trash loot so the players don't get too much information to handle after he kills stuff but vendor trash stuff is pointless anyways, just kill them and steal their gold, not their junk.
Giving out skill XP for any slash just makes the game pointless. Combat are something you do to kill people and monsters, therefor you should get the XP after you actually killed something, if the game is levelbased or skillbased doesn't matter there. If you use combat spells they should get better then, not after you threw some random bolts around.
Healing spells do you only gt xp for when you heal someone that is hurt, weaponsmithing when you craft a weapon and so on. No XP for failure. Beating on a dummy won't learn you anything BTW unless you plan to beat up someone standing totaly still.
I just started playing EVE, and I have to say I think they handled it properly in the skill up department.
Yup now people just target each other. Target -cast spell-heal- rinse- repeat over, and over, and over, and over, and over. It's actually not a problem unique to Darkfall. People do it with any game where skills increase through use. Whenever grinding is more efficient than actually playing a game some people will do it endlessly. You hsave to wonder why they bother coding complex mechanics for it. Why not just have a big red button to click on for hours and a drop down box with a list of skills? Welcome to the Skinner box.
It's not more efficient than actually playing the game. One skills up much faster when fighting tougher mobs, thus why PvE is fun and useful. Lame as it is, most do this attended, so it's a choice of weather to gain skill slower but easier, or actually go out and adventure and gain skill faster but with more risk. Unattended macroing is against the rules and most of the players I've reported for it have been kicked from the game.
Any way, these things don't really mean much to those of us playing. I for one don't use these tactics and my character advancement is excellent.
Those who play on the recently born NA server are not at an unfair advantage. The EU server is a different story, but even when they allow transfers from EU to NA in another few months, AV has already reserved the right to impose "limitations". We know that no items or gold will be transferred, and we suspect they will do a data query and if a nerf on skills on the EU server is necessary to balance out NA, I'm sure that will happen, but as it appears today, the progression of skills on NA is approaching EU. NA is ony about 3 weeks old.

i dunno about you but even after i get my ass kicked in something IRL i learn something
actually i learn more by failing than just succeeding at everything
Lets focus on the real matters at hand? Cults exist for a reason. Fanboys do fine for drinking the koo-laid. The "wannabie" trolls on this site do good at following Islam or Christianity. Jihad to all who follow the games we don't like. Put it simple everyone a hypocrite. Shut it or play it. Simple as that. My god this site is full of quote whores.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?

Doing your grind when you're not there is the most efficient method. It's actually effortless. You skill up by playing and they skill up 24/7 by not playing. Who tops out first? They do. You may get more gain per cast but they get more per day in several skills each day. It's nuts, they're paying not to play a game and you're having fun. Like I said it's not exclusive to Darkfall, every game that used the skill increase by doing method has some form of it.
First off, I don't consider skilling up or playing the game a grind. When you enjoy playing a game, it doesn't feel like a grind, but that is player preference and dependent on what makes each player happy. Some can't have fun until they are X level of skill.
Unattended macroing is against the rules of the game, and is a bannable offense, so those doing it do so at their own risk. If reported, you can usually stand back and watch as the GM boots them off the server.
I agree, you will find various cheating in all games. Even in level based games there are bot programs that can play the game for you while you sleep if that's a persons thing.

Lol you read forums or read some info and make topic to point out how badly something is implemented, its alreay fixed months ago, that clearly means you NEVER have played the game-

Unattended macroing definatley isn't something invented by DF players. I think our clan should have sparring and training sessions like in real life. Instead of the meat wall we can have players lined up sparing with eachother learning skills in the safety of you keep. Training. Just like doing a bit of jogging along the keep walls to raise up your sprinting.
The this time, macroing doesn't bother me one bit. I'll get there at some point, and I know if I wanna go out and hunt I'll probably tag along with my clansmen for some security.
