This week's Friday Update is a developer blog on creating the Smuggler class for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The blog describes the smuggler as someone who makes their own rules, is an excellent shot, and is a bit of a wisecrack.
Smugglers will get most of the witty dialogue options in the game. You'll be able to flirt with Jedi Knights, and laugh at Sith Lords. They describe the stories written for the smuggler in Star Wars: The Old Republic as focusing on humor and romance. Smugglers will do just about anything for credits, which is why they mainly work for the Republic. The Empire? They pay crap, apparently.
The developer blog describes the smuggler as a real crack shot, and someone possessing many unorthodox combat moves. And he'll need them, after all with all the Jedi running around he'll need to use everything at his disposal to stand toe-to-toe with a guy who can lift up a starship with his mind. Also, smugglers will have sidekicks, think Chewbacca to your Han Solo. It isn't specified if these sidekicks are functionally any different than the companions normally available to players, though.
Smugglers will be great in team dialogue situations as well, if you're in a party with one, they suggest you let the smuggler negotiate for the best credit payout.
Some additional info on what the team at BioWare are doing to really bring the smuggler to life in Star Wars: The Old Republic:
Our combat designers have outdone themselves inventing powers to leave your fellow players laughing out loud and asking how you pulled off that stunt. The animation team is creating custom movements that perfectly evoke the sheer bravado and lightning reflexes Han Solo displayed when he took three (three!) shots at Darth Vader on Bespin. World builders tirelessly create dens of scum and villainy, populating them with the galaxy’s most notorious criminals. Artists craft all the small details that tie everything together, from sweet-looking blaster pistols to flashy outfits that put Lando’s wardrobe to shame.
Last but not least, the writing team has invested its tremendous love for snappy dialogue, outrageous characters and insane story twists into every aspect of playing a Smuggler. If you’re teamed-up with a Jedi or Trooper and chat with a NPC, you’ll always get to rattle off the best one-liners. If those other classes are looking to earn a few extra credits on the side, they’d be fools not to let you do the negotiating.

So the Smuggler become that mandatory class that groups need because they can get money credit(money) payouts. Course, I guess it only matters if money actually means something, which it doesn't in most games these days so, meh.

it's ICONIC!!! And STAR WARSY!!!
Seriously, I swear these guys came up with the lamest stereo-types they could and designed the classes around them.
Oh, and if the "Empire" ( SO ICONIC!!!) "pays crap" then why are Bounty Hunters automatically aligned with that faction?? Wouldn't they work for whomever payed the best as well??
Oh yeah....it wouldn't be ICONIC to have a rebel....err...."Republic" Bounty Hunter, now would it??
Edit: OMG!!! Follow the link!!! It gets even BETTER!!!!
"The Old Republic™ is the first Star Wars™ video game to let players truly live the dream of being Han Solo or Lando Calrissian. Other games have let you engage in a bit of smuggling for profit or simulate “scoundrels” as a collection of stat bonuses, but none come close to delivering the humor, romance and just plain fun of being a wisecracking Smuggler who triumphs against all odds. Every member of The Old Republic team is committed to crafting the defining rendition of the Smuggler archetype."
Really??? Oh and just LOOK at the SHOULDER PADS in that freak-suit just below the above paragraph in the actual linked article....all I can say is...
WOW!!! (pun intended). Are those the epic tier three Smuggler pads of ICONIC uberness???
Excuse me....I'm gonna go throw up now.....
Its just aPR piece to get the Star Wars fans. They already got the KOTOR gang. Now they want the SWG types.
Finally - Best site for Chuck Norris

Jedi may see things before they happen, but Smugglers always shoot first.
Anyone else catch this little dig?
Good luck with that. Those SWG types that were going to play TOR are already on-board. The rest aren't interested in this version of the SW universe. Especially when, like in this article, they try to tell us that being able to write and enact our own Smuggler stories or "Sagas" as we did in SWG just wasn't as funny, witty or exciting as reading the canned lines from their stock of writers. Sorry, only I know what my vision of a Smuggler would say or do and choosing from a 4-5 choice "reply bank" filled with lines generated from another person's mind doesn't strike me as interesting as they are hyping it to be. *shrug*

They're referring to interactions with NPCs.
Sounds fun to me, but the proof will be in the pudding.

Hmm, surprised by the negativity. Or, considering what site I'm on, maybe not. Anyway...I love the idea of smugglers being good negotiaters. In the table-top game I play( a game our GM has been creating for 20+ years..lol) we have a subclass of merchant. If you want the best payout let the merchant do the negotiating. Anything that makes computer RPG's feel more like tabletop is alright by me.
Personally I can't wait to play a smuggler - heck I might play a few since your choices change the way your story develops... I can be a charmer one time and a jerk the next...
"new Corellian Engines are expensive" sounds like a Ship Upgrade tease to me
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
This sounds great. I may actually play a smuggler. The one-liners and wise cracks are some of the best parts of the movies and games and I'll almost certainly want to check it out.
Sounds great so far to me.
You have got serious issues buddy. Shoulder pads? Give me a break. I think you need a little more valium and LOTS of bed rest. I suppose you're a typical forums troll though... just oozing negativity from every orafice. Isn't that the forums fashion these days? Frankly we need a lot less of people like you on these forums and few more that can just discuss topics. Or even... heaven forbid... propose a little positive energy. Now, don't get me wrong... I'm not looking for rabid fanboys (though, in all honesty, I would prefer that to your rabid ranting).
I personally look forward to seeing this one come to light, because really... none of us have a f**king clue how this will play out... until it does. Part of me wishes they didn't let anyone know about these games until testing was required, so we didn't get all this fanboy/basher crap. I mean... let's talk about it when there's something tangible to discuss. [stepping down from the wooden box...]
pfft....whatever, man. Follow the link....look at that suit of...whatever it is.....looks like something out of COH....with HUGE HONKIN' SHOULDER PADS.
My points are all 100% spot on, and that really burns your ass, doesn't it? Problem is, your annoyance at my pointing out the obvious doesn't change anything.
But hey, at least I was able to do so with some wit and flare....far more entertaining to read than your little tantrum there.
Whar, shouldn't you be playing Darkfall instead of trolling TOR? We all know you don't like it, along with the other sandboxers. It's annoying and pathetic to watch you at this point. At the very least, please wait for MO, or, even better, Earthrise (like I am).
As for the Dev Blog, it's looking good. For those who are interested in the game.
nah, I'm not paying for ANY game twice.
Ya know what, though....for the most part I stay out of the TOR forums....but this is General Discussion....therefore I'm not "trolling", I'm stating my opinion on a news article. Last I knew, we still had that right.
I'm not convinced that MO, Earthrise, Fallen Earth, or any of the potentially decent titles will actually release in a "finished" state...I think we're looking at a whole generation of indie games being released unoptimised, with about 50% of their content intact.
So, I'm not waiting on anything. If something comes out and surprises me....cool. If not, I still get to sit here and pick on what is wrong with the industry, and the crap they try to feed us.
As is my right.

...Vallium and LOTS and LOTS of rest. Are you referring to the TINY shoulder pads in the lower photo? Again I say...whatever. As for your other points, how could they possibly be spot on? You haven't played the f**king game yet!! NO wit...NO flare... this is the wit and flare of a two year old.
Ok this is all good and well, but I want to kno what the class accually can do, are we gonna be able to do slicing( terminals and any other locked things ), crafting/trading/smuggling spices throughout the galaxy, and in general be mischeivious.
All I'm seeing is that smugglers get witty remarks, which isnt that great to me since my smuggler is never a man of many words, instead of just shotting stuff smugglers have to constantly use the cover system, and smugglers get all sorts of flashy unexpected moves, or and dont forget a sidekick because Han Solo did it.
Smugglers should be stealthy, use dirty fighting techniques, and have no regard for rules/laws this is including the rebellions and the empires, they purely work for cash not being on either side.
But we'll see, this is one of the only up coming games that has anything interesting to it, I just hope they dont ruin my beloved class with some crappy heroic smuggler, two things that should never go togeather.
Mess with the best, Die like the rest
Hopefully they will add something more unique than just giving Smugglers extra rewards. The witty remarks thing sounds sorta neat, but really its just a click through that people wont even read and certainly wont feel witty clicking it since youre only clicking it because it gives you more money and not because you or your character would necessarily say such things.
I agree with Wharg0ul about the ridiculousness of emphasising 'iconicness' of the class and the shoulder pads are pretty silly too.
Play as your fav retro characters: cnd-online.net. My site: www.lysle.net. Blog: creatingaworld.blogspot.com.

Actually I prefer lots of caffeine, and whiskey. But my choice of chemicals aside.....yeah..I'm talking about those shoulder pads in the lower photo. I'd paste it right here so you could be blided by their obvious EPIC nature, but it's in a little flash applet, so no dice.
Let me tell ya something man....I don't NEED to play the game to see the obvious direction this thing is taking. It's as plain as day to those of us not wearing official Fanboi Brand (TM) blinders.
As for your cheap crack at my maturity level...I never claimed to be running for a popularity contest here. Just pointing out the huge PURPLE, EPIC, ICONIC elephant in the middle of the room.
I hope there's something similar to the Smuggler on the Sith Empire ... I want to be a 'Smuggler-ish' kind of class but play with my Bounty Hunter and Sith friends. Maybe a Gangster, Assassin or Spy?
EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I played a smuggler on SWG and they totally screwed it up. Lame ass smuggling.
EVE does a good job of it.
