The "Only play games at launch" idea

Ok, so I've played many MMO's...EQ1, DAOC, CoH, WAR, AO, EQ2, WoW, VG, EVE, LOTRO, TR, trying out Entropia at the moment, my gosh now that I think about it there are more, and I hadn't realized I played so many.

In many cases I played the game at launch and this seemed to be the funnest times I had.  It seems like learning and figuring out a new MMO world is a lot of fun to me.  This is not always the case, such as in Anarchy Online being unplayable, but once the game is playable, it's really fun for a time.  Then the population splits up, things get geared towards endgame content, cities empty, groups get hard to find, etc.

So, I think I'm going to develop a strategy to join MMO's when things get going acceptably well, play until a new one comes along that looks cool.  I hate to jump on and off bandwagons, but the MMO industry just sucks at the moment.

Any multigame guilds do this?

What ya think?

Playing EVE online currently. Started MMO's with EQ Velious, played EQ2, DAoC, CoH, AO, SWG (pre NGE), Planetside, DCUO. Played briefly cause I didn't like: WAR, WoW, VG, etc. etc.

you have a point. thats probably the best way to go...kinda sad though (the market trends and what not)

I'm doing the opposite atm. I gave up playing games directly after release:

    - they are bugged like hell

    - half of the content is missing

    - a few month after the hype, they only cost like half of the release price

Only playing at launch isn't too great imo.  At launch most MMORPGs are at their worst.

It sounds like the thing you enjoy most about MMORPGs is the newness of them, which is fine.   But that newness can be had 6-12 months after a game releases too (because if you don't play it til 6-12 months later, it's still new to you...but with bug fixes.)

You all are missing the "when games become playable" part of my post.  That's what I'm talking about though, right after launch when it truly becomes decently playable.

I see where you are going with this, but I think the real issue is whether or not the game is any good or not. I've played some games well after launch that were great, while others were terrible at launch.

I understand what you're saying. But I don't think it's that way for every game. Some games will be good at launch and only get better. Some will be OK and suck hard 6 months later. But yes, most are better at launch; just because everyone is learning the game at the same time.

Well I think he's talking mainly about everybody being new & that feel a new game has. Yes launch games almost always are buggy. But a couple years in they usually nerf the crap outta stuff and generally make the game less fun, just to make it more challenging and keep the people who stayed running on the hamster wheel for as long as possible.
