Politics and other useless garbage: Weeds choking life from the forums.

goneglockingoneglockin Member UncommonPosts: 706

Just thought I'd throw in my two bits on why I don't come here anymore, rarely.  Politics, picking sides, positions and debating, arguing, yelling, screaming, jumping up and down and caring has got to be the single biggest waste of time ever.

It's boring.  There's circular and endless posts and infinite quote chains.

The sooner people start realizing they don't make a difference, the sooner we can all just get back to living our lives and occasionally posting up some funny, interesting or informative shit in the off topic forums that makes this place pleasant to visit time to time.

Society will inevitably destroy itself.  Whether or not you vote, debate policy, or donate to campaigns- civilization will come to a halt as we know it because humans are too petty and insecure to affect real progress.  So- be selfish and enjoy yourselves.  If this is your hobby, get a new hobby.

It's a serious waste of time and I am enjoying life much more since I stopped watching TV, stopped reading a daily newspaper, stopped caring about politics.  And I still haven't had time to do my laundry this week.

Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.

    QFT.

    Im with ya man.

And to all the people who love arguing about this tired old shit over and over again, yes it is OT, yes we don't have to read political threads, but the bottom line is it's driving away posters and people are sick to death over having a front page dominated by what Obama ate for lunch and how it affects the economy.

The stupid pointless right-wing vs left-wing bickering must end. I have noticed in ALL of these threads one side does not give a shit about the other, it is not valuable discussion because each side is never open to suggestion or criticism from the other, so deep are they set in their ways.

I have no idea when this sick obsession with politics began on these forums but like Glockin' I'm sick to death of it. That's just my 2 cents.

Almost all of the humor and interesting stuff is in the individual game forums, because this is an mmorpg forum, and that has pretty much always been the case. There are also something like 5 people in here.

It didn't used to be like this. There used to be lots more threads about novelty news, movies/books, and abstract philosophical questions. There are far more political idealogues now, go figure.

This is like going to the hardware forum an telling everyone they wasting all there time talking about PC hardware instead of Mac. I like discussing books but no one seems interested. I don't get all mad at everyone because they don't like my taste in books.

Feel free to start your thread about lolcats.  We'll start ours.

There i corrected your analogy. Problem i have is how the front page of the forum is dominated by the same topics all the time and how the 'converstions, in them go nowhere fast. I miss the funny topics, the Philosophical topics, the Science topics.

Nowadays its all just about Comrad O'bama bin laden.

This is the sort of thing I'm sick of on this forum.

Everything is doom and gloom with human hating sprinkled on top of it.  If you've really stopped doing those things you've claimed then you shouldn't still feel this way.

    I still like them.

I prefer the international politics of course. I find the domestic foreign politics threads pretty hard to get into.

I certainly like to see all the quirky little good humoured threads that abound round here. That's what attracted me originally, not because I enjoy those threads, but because I enjoy the company of good humoured people.

I don't feel this thread is a particular step up from any politics thread. Sorry. Not much good humoured banter intended with this one.

Depends on your focus I guess, OP.

    Some other Off Topic threads:

"Mountain Dew Game Fuel Contest Cheaters Exposed"

    "MAME??? anyone?"

    "RIP John Hughes (1 2)"

"What was your favorite John Hughes movie?"

"Turns out the large Hadran colider really is a black hole!"

"Empire: Total War, anyone else here played this crappy game? (1 2 3)"

"A legal farmers ' alliance start to sell cheapest golds now"

"Bodies stack up in California morgue"

"Wind turbines that pull water from the air (1 2 3)"

"Why aren't we there yet? (1 2)" (Mars)

"If you were offered a trip to Mars... (1 2)"

"Billy Mays death attributed to cocaine use (1 2)"

    "Fable 2"

    " Heading to Vegas soon.... (1 2)"

"Today is a sad day. Sam the Koala died in surgery today."

"Damn Doctors always think you're just paranoid.."

"This movie looks funny - Whip It"

"Forget politics, these are the all important questions..."

"What happened to the History Channel? (1 2 3)"

"A single-player game site like this one?"

    "Sex Panther Cologne"

"Anyone ever used the Princeton Review books to study for the LSAT?"

    "Greatest single player RPG's?"

"What is the worst kind of physical pain? (1 2)"

That's just SOME of the ones this week that you could have participated in. None of them involve politics. Or you could start your own topic which you did with:

"Politics and other useless garbage: Weeds choking life from the forums. (1 2)"

Seemed like you wanted to start a thread complaining about other threads, even though you claim:

Don't you realize by including politics in your thread, you are inviting discussion about.. politics in threads?

I tried to get a chuckle out of people here with my last thread.  But apparently nobody gets my sense of humor.  I admit I am an odd one though.  Normaly all my posts are made with intentions to make others laugh a little.  I try, but I guess I'm the Jay Leno or the mmorpg.com off topic forums.  (He's not funny)

This website is a safe haven for trolls and haters. I'm done with this pathetic site.

    OP,

A discussion forum is a place to discuss or debate topics. Those topics usually surround the subject material of the site hosting the forum. In an off topic forum where any discussion/debate is allowed, people discuss random things. Lately it has been political, and i dont usually participate in these discussion/debates

There are other discussions/debates. Other forums. But to not come back because the threads arent to your liking? That's just giving up. Cause there's this magic button that will let you discuss or debate anything you like! It usually reads,"New Thread".

This is true.  Let's face it, whether you like it or not, political topics always become the hottest threads.  I like to discuss other things myself and I try to post different subjects whenever I think I have interesting ones.  But they almost never draw as much interest from others on the forum.  So I inevitably end up returning to old reliable - politics.

In a way I have to agree with some of what the OP has to say. I've found there really is no discussion or debate on this Off-topic forum. Just people trying to either out argue each other. I've long given up on trying to convince anyone here to see things, if not differently, as others see it. Most are locked in to their views and I think I would get a better result debating with the four walls of my living room. Mostly I come here for a good laugh more than anything else.

I don't agree with the OP's view that the human race is beyond hope and doomed to self destruction. We can be a savage, brutal, stubborn, self-centered species, but we also can be creative, loving, innovative and at times able to overcome our primal nature and raise ourselves from our own muck. Human development always seems a sort of two step forward and one step back sort of situation. We are on the way to making our species better but it can be a damn slow process at times.

To the OP and others tired of politics:

In the meantime while you wait for the politics to reduce there is a General Gaming forum further subdivided into PC Gaming and Console Gaming.

    (If you want)

It can definitely use some growth.

Aside from the odd person who irks me when it comes to how they argue; I generally enjoy these forums. And I think if I met any of the guys I've argued with on these forums irl... I could only think of one person I'd want to put in a sac and off a bridge :P

Let me get this straight... You're sick to death of all of the political debates that go no where because people are too stuck in their ways to see anyone else's viewpoint... So you came here and started a political thread debating whether or not politics should be discussed... Also you started the thread with a post stating your viewpoint which is apparently so set in stone it's preventing you from enjoying the forums anymore(You also tried to pre-shoot down the main argument against your viewpoint so you wouldn't have to deal with most of those that might oppose you).

Oh the irony runs thick in this thread.

What always amazes me is how someone posts a political thread using a flame bait hook, and then the mods issue warnings for trolling the flame bait thread.

It's almost as good as someone referring to you in a derogatory manner, and when you turn it back on them you get the warning.

It's priceless when both happen to you in the same political thread.

    Anyone else notice this?

Its like that everywhere. You can accuse and make accusations, but for gods sake dont defend yourself against any of them! Im warning you! o.O

These threads used to have some awesome topics back in the day. The newer members (i.e. Popinjay, Sabian etc.) brought their politics with them and incessantly spam this forum with crap we watch on the news every day and don't care to hear about; well at least I'm sick of it and it has really taken my interest back out of this forum.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

  • gnomexxxgnomexxx Member Posts: 2,920

OP, you can start your own topics.  Nothing is stopping you.

And I can to make a difference.  I challenge your premise on that argument.  It's like I told someone else here a while back, why don't you go try volunteering with some of your free time and then come back and tell us you can't make a difference?  Get more involved in your community and you'll see that change come about.

You're stuck in that mindset where you've given up your feeling of individual destiny.  It's a scary trend right now.  I hope you can get yourself out of it.

Yep, and I have a really good idea who some of the folks doing it are.  I know because any time I post in their topics I seem to get the warnings from the mods.  So, I do not post in their topics anymore and suddenly they stopped.  Go figure.

Oh, I'm soooo tempted to name names.  But I'm a stronger man than that.

...and here's another one of the things that bother me about this forum...

This fella posts in this political thread started by Popinjay (Link)  Then he comes here and says this 3 days later...
