"Ready or not....some day..... all this will come to an end.

There will be no more sunrises.... .no minutes...hours or days.

All the things we collected, whether treasured or forgotten...

...will pass on to someone else.

Our wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.

It will not matter what we owned or what we were owed.

Our grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies too will finally

disappear.

And so too, will our hopes....ambitions. ....plans. ....and to-do lists

expire.

The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.

At the end......it will not matter where we came from....

.. or on what side of the tracks we lived.

It will not matter whether we were beautiful or brilliant.

Even our gender and skin colour will be irrelevant.

So.... what will matter? How will the value of our days be measured?

What will matter is not what we bought, but what we built...

Not what we got, but what we gave.

What will matter is not our success..... but our significance.

What will matter is not what we learned..... but what we taught.

What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or

sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to live a better

life.

What will matter, is not our competence.. ....but our character.

What will matter, is not how many people we knew.....but how many will

feel a lasting loss when we're gone.

What will matter, is not our memories.... . but the memories that live in

those who loved us.

What will matter is how long we will be remembered.. ..by whom and for what.

Living a life that matters does NOT happen by accident. It is not a matter

of circumstance but of choice.

So dear brothers and sisters....now is the moment....

Let us choose to live a life that matters!

SLOW DOWN

Life is not a race. It is a journey.

Getting someplace first, before anyone else, has very little real and lasting

meaning. Seek instead to encourage others to come along, and we'll find the

journey much more fulfilling.

When we hurry through each moment, we miss out on the richness that could be

ours.

Take the time to live, to experience where we are, rather than being so obsessed

with getting to the next checkpoint.

When we stop demanding to have it all now, we'll discover that we have plenty

already. Learn to experience joy where we are, and we'll experience it in abundance.

Yes, it can be wonderfully exhilarating when life is moving quickly. But do not

move so quickly that speed becomes our only experience, for there is so much more

to enjoy.

The terrain of life is filled with wonderful and astounding detail. Slow down and

take in its richness."

This is a philosophy for life I try to fulfill every day, but it can be perfectly applied to MMO's. I think people lose sight of this. It is for THESE reasons and only in THIS regard that I might consider myself to be something of an elitist, as opposed to numbers crunchers and the like who exploit and discriminate against other players for unwarranted reasons. Anyway, just felt like sharing. Discuss -- or, y'know, don't. Whatever.

True.  It's not about the beginning or the end, but the journey.  The only game where I felt like the majority of the population felt this way was FFXI.  I would say that most MMO's these days promote the opposite way of thinking.  They try to appeal to the materialistic and provide instant gratification so often that people don't realize how shallow the game really is.

Anyway thanks for posting.  It fits well with life, and since an MMORPG in it's purest form could be considered a virtual world in which players can live a alternate virtual life it applies really well there as well.

Excellent post... and I agree 100%; in life and in MMOs.

That's the "trick" with MMOs that I think many have forgotten - or never caught in the first place. They are about the journey. There's always plenty to do around you - if you get off the treadmill, take off the blinders and stop racing past everything long enough to see it. Though some have come along that clearly cater more to "end game".

I've seen this proven over time more and more, with every new MMO that's released. A clear line is drawn between two distinct groups.

On one side, you have the people who race through games, always having to "get to end-game ASAP". Time and again, they inevitably tend to get burned out and frustrated - typically blaming the developers. They move on to the next MMO... do the same thing... and end up in the same place. Every new MMO they start is merely a hold-over 'til the next one comes out. Time and again, in every MMO they go to, they find themselves in the same situation... and inevitably blame the game for their own choice of play-style. They can't be bothered to help others achieve goals, because they're only interested in their own progress - helping others only slows them down, unless they get something out of it.

On the other side, you see people playing some of those same MMOs, taking their time, enjoying the sights, getting involved with more of what the game offers. They take the time to help others out, get involved with the community. Even years later, those people are still happily playing the same game, with no desire to leave, no matter how much greener neighboring lawns might appear.

In short, in any given game, while the former group seems to always feel short-changed after a couple months, the latter is still enjoying themselves years later.

I definitely place myself in the latter group... If that makes me "elitist" to some, then so be it.

    Ah...such a beautiful life philosophy.

Many mmorpg gamers nowadays seem to always want to rush towards max level cap, complete the game, and so on.

One thing I hope that SE does is they make the game long, just like FF XI. It'll piss off the casuals, sure, but have many people forgotten how important the journey is?
