This is something that's got me down lately., when it comes to MMOs. Every game I've tried since I stopped playing Asherons Call has been either destroyed (SWG), pathetic (WoW), difficult (EVE), a ripoff (AoC launch), boring (CoH/V), or a failure (Darkfall). I've realized what I've been looking for, a game that feels like old school Asherons Call. However, I don't think that there will ever be another game like this in its heyday. What do you think?

ac was kind of an accident.
PVP accidentally came together in a massive pve game that would make most korean grind games flinch. The combat system was awsome, and from a time where diablo like spray and prays were badass.
I loved AC's pvp, pve, and leveling system, but quite honestly the grind alone would throw 90% of the players off these days imo. I remember playing for a year to get to 126... most folks here would stroke out having to play for a year to hit "max level".
Great game though...
I'm sure taste is all subjective and relative, but I don't see how you can call World of Warcraft "pathetic".
It might not be your cup of tea, but 12 million people think otherwise. Yes, yes, I know its not as complex and deep, but man its fun to play.
And I loved AC too, so don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it wasn't great, cause it sure was.
Since AC is still running, and for that matter so is UO. People need to stop saying "when will there be another game like AC or UO?" since there still is. If you like that kind of game then play it, but don't be one of those superficial people who constantly need the newest graphics so they will act like a game doesn't exist anymore once it's older.
My issue is not that "the graphics are older" because I still love the game itself. My issue with the game is that the community made it great; it just doesn't exist anymore. I wish that I could jump in and play again but there just isnt enough people to play with and.... Its just sad... I miss MMO's but there is nothing that had the community and fun of this game. You always miss your first and nothing ever lives up to it again.
It's funny though, because so far it's been the only game that makes a grind like that -worth it-. AC was one of the best social, pvp, and pve experiences I've ever had in an MMO. The grind didn't really feel like a grind because there were so many things that made it worthwhile - the random loot drops that could be awesome, the constant skill/attribute raising. It made it feel like you were always improving instead of just improving once per level like in most games. I think this was its strongest point.
There was a noticeable grind, but they rewarded you often enough that you didn't notice it as much. There wasn't a competition to get to the highest level like in a lot of games, because it was a couple years after the release that the -first- person hit max level. And then they trickled in very slowly for a while after that. It was another year or so before hitting max level became more common. For a while, only guild leaders or higher ups in guilds had managed to do it, which IMO made the game great.
High levels weren't everywhere, and honestly I didn't see too many people striving to get there. Nobody EXPECTED to hit max level. It's not like in WoW where you had to get to max level to do anything. In AC, I never felt like I had to level to compete with anyone, because there was so much content along the way, and it was all memorable. The developers at the time did a wonderful job of making TONS of low/mid-level content. There was never a lack of something to do.. you could always be collecting pieces for a quest, or try to find that uber piece of gear in a random drop.. or collect keys for various chests that would give good loot. etc.. In recent years of course, the game has run its course and everyone is max level (which is now twice as high as before). But back in its prime, nobody fought to get max level. People leveled, but high levels would help lower levels with quests, would help with corpse runs, etc.. fantastic experience that is ignored by too many people.

Ahh reading these posts makes me miss AC, I played the beta and for a few years after it came out I played off and on. I've been looking for something that gives me that same feeling that AC did but I have been unable to find it. I wish the AC community was still there!
I wonder what it would take to convince Turbine to chance Asheron's Call franchise again? They're making money with LOTR Online, so it's really hard to say if they'll even try to get a newly improved AC out. That's really too bad, Turbine is the only one that can make something like AC1 again imo....even if AC1 was an accident in terms of its PvP success.

Wow doesn't have 12 million players anymore. They lost a lot in Korea as I think China is still blocking their servers. So they are probably having more like 6 millions right now, and China is supposed to open up the servers again soon but only the gods know how many players they lost in 4 months there.
But it surely isn't pathetic, any game that maxed out on 13.5 million players had a great run.
If it is fun too play is however a personal opinion, it doesn't work for me but that doesn't make it Pathetic. Well, parts of the lore is but Wow still did great.
In ACs case I think we will see something similar but different in the future. AC had some great ideas and good gameplay but a remake isn't good enough, we would need new fun things together with the best old stuff.
