I am 100% computer illiterate.
I was curious if these system specs are good enough to play most of the modern day games that require a good size chunk of system requirements.. games such as Age of Conan, GTA IV...etc..etc.
A Friend of mine purchased an Alienware PC about 4-6 months back for gaming purposes. He said he rarely gets the time to play it anymore because he spends most of his free time on his Xbox-360, and said he would sell it to me for $1,000. He also said its been used only maybe 30-40 hours max, So its practically in New Condition.

Do you think this computer would run most stuff? If not what would i need to upgrade? Any info would be much appreciated and helpful in my decision to buy it from him or not...

I play on a Sager Gaming laptop with lower specs than that. And I have not run across a game I couldn't play yet. So i'd say your good.
its not terrible at all, like all prebuilt alienwares its def overprized for what you get for your money, but people that dont build their own never seem to mind paying twice as much. the only real downside i see on it atm is its going to need more ram sooner then later, there are games out now that wont run flawlessly with only 3 gigs of ram on vista, its not a huge issue, but to someone that doesnt know how adding ram later might be a hassle, of course its not too difficult if you know someone that knows how to get more ram and plug it in for you =D. the 1000 hes asking is definitely under what he paid, and thats barely enough hours on it to consider it properly broken in, the warrenty transfering shouldnt be an issue, might just have to have him call in any issues you have with it if it breaks down. anyway best of luck.
Take the deal before your friend comes to his senses.
All the hardware + OS combined would cost you over $1000 even to build it yourself.

its upgradable to like 12gig ram for max i believe or around there.. my friend also told me that.. and iv been looking at adding more memory.. for about 120dollars i can add another 3gig to it..
do you believe if i got it to atleast 6gig would that be a good gaming computer for a while be4 ill have to upgrade?
I Have 4 gb ram and I can run most games on the highest settings. Unless you need a couple of games open at the same time I think you good.
You'll need a new video card probably in a few years, but other than that should be good.
Seriously, take the deal. He's selling it to you under cost. Just a guess based on the price of the major parts currently, it would cost you about $1300-1600 to get all of the hardware & OS.
To buy it off the shelf you're talking $2000 minimum.

ok.. im going to goahead and buy it from him.. Thanks for the info guys.. its much appreciated!!
well you almost always have to upgrade your vid card every 2-3 years unless you play low spec games. and 6 gigs of ram should last until you need a vid card upgrade!
Im not exactly sure about this but I know that some games need Windows SP2 edition and from the looks of it, it only has SP1, maybe it doesnt make a difference but maybe it does...?

Yeah thats a hell of a deal for $1000. Like someone said earlier 3gb ram will be a touch sluggish in some games. It already has a 64bit os so upgrading to 6 gb that laptop will run for a while before it has issues playing modern games. You might not just be able to buy 3 more gb of ram though, depends on the mobo itself, if it has 6 ram slots or 4. 6 is coming the standard on ddr3 boards but its also just a laptop mobo.
Endpoint: Buy it, much worth the price and just make sure you read up on the mobo before you buy the ram.
Just Curious.. what kind of memory is compatable.. it already has 3x 1024mb memory cards in the machine.. and it has 3 more slots available.. could anyone give me a link to a good Memory card and/or the type i should look for! I could deal with buying 2 more 1024mb sticks or a single one with 2048mb.. I'm not very knowledged in this field, i would hate to get something then it be incompatable and/or a cheap crappy one!! Looking for something with performance!
It has three 1GB sticks of RAM in there because it's running in Triple Channel. You wouldn't want to buy more memory for it unless you were getting a set of three. You could either buy three more 1GB sticks and putting them in the other three slots (potentially troublesome) or purchase three 2GB sticks and completely replace the current memory.
In any case, don't bother upgrading the memory right now. It's unnecessary, and it'll be cheaper and easier to upgrade later when you actually need the extra RAM.
