I tried this game and I was astonished to find that it stuttered just like Warhammer did, despite having circa 1990's quality graphics. Whatever engine they used for those games should be incinerated.

My bad, not very techie myself so I wasn't exactly sure what he was talking about. It's just that I have fond memories of DAoC and would be reduced to tears if it started to look like Lineage 2.
I was talking about the technical code part of the game (the one that the game is run on) and not the actual art/visual style.
Sorry, for a triple A developer like Mythic who got pumped with money, the engine (actually upgraded Daoc engine) they created is a huge pile of poop.
DaOC was great before they did Atlantis and tried to be more like other games as opposed to an RvR game. When they first did classic servers it was fun, but it was sort of ruined by the fact there way too many Hibernians for anyone to have any fun really.
Too many issues with classic servers. Too little, way too late, for one thing. For another though, I spent two years developing my characters, which were like a virtual team of alts, and their social connections. Making friends, being involved with an active guild, and all that. Starting over from scratch, throwing all that away, just wasn't going to happen, without the excitement of a brand new game.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I loved DAOC and went back to it three different times. I bet if they dropped the price as most do when they get older everyone would drop wowhammer and go back to good old rvr. I really believe the reason they don't support it well anymore or drop the price is exactly that. And yes I love the rvr system and its the best out there to me. The only thing close is mega battles in EVE and they kept crashing the servers.
I dont think another game like DaoC can be made again. The problem is that the game actually took skill and effort to master, that is a great barrier against popularity in today's games, but sadly its also what gives a game quality. If you are not special by doing special stuff then there is no real reward from playing and it all becomes pointless.
So since it will not get a big following then it wont get the investment needed to make it a good game.
One can only hope that one day the investors begin to realize that the future is in niche games and not big flash titles. Niche games can focus on a limited genre and then do that special niche 100% making fans of that type of game happy and people that like something different can then go play that.
Problem is so far the niche games we have seen haven't had the funding needed to make then good enough to be real commercial successes in the long run.
So until something changes we wont see a game with the quality of DaoC again.
"You are the hero our legends have foretold will save our tribe, therefore please go kill 10 pigs."
I know someone already touched on this, but one of the greatest apsects about DAOC was the Realm Pride! I don't think you get much of it now days... well you might get a smidge in LOTRO's monster play or if you play a Stygian on the RP-PVP in AoC. But the level of competition between the realms was just so pure! Gawd I remember setting my alarm for 4 am on a Sat morning for Hib relic raids!(we we the least populated of the three). The pride even tricketed into PVE life when going on dragon raids... If the game has a chance at coming back why let it die? I would be more than happy to come back!
My fondest memories from DAOC was runing with a full mid guild group and taking out 30-40 albs on regular basis. Hibs were harder we could only kill 20 of them at once. What other game could a skilled group do so well VS equal level players? Shadowbane maybe but that one's gone for good.
In the end what killed DAOC was the Dev's never understood what players wanted, they listened to a small minority and shot themselves in the foot more than once. TOA,NF,ML,artifacts, broken realm abilities, /level 20 , poor game engine and their tendency to add broken untested class's with every untested/unwanted expansion.
DOAC + SI was good, everything past that was fail (just on different levels of fail, some worse than others). Even the housing zone was gawd aweful / poorly planed.
Please.. because some liked daoc does not nor was it ever the BEST MMO! If was so good millions would still be playing it. So get over it.. its not going to happen. RVR is not , was not a huge hit then and its not now. You just love the game thats all. Sorry

LOL WHAT!?
Tell me another game that rivals or even comes close to DAoC in the PvP/RvR Department.
If you say Darkfall I swear I will kick you in the nuts....
I never found RvR compelling enough to want to get involved to some great degree, or even that much fun for that matter.
The only thing that was better than your average MMO is that they had 3 factions going at each other, WARs RvR is a heck of alot easier to get into, WoW's PvP and arena battles are just as easy to get into aswell.
DAoC is just tired and old and boring, I've been back a few times over the years to see if I could get into it again but it just doesn't hit my buttons at all now.
I suspect those that have come to adore DAoC are very much like those of us who made Everquest 1 our first MMO, rose tinted glasses make the game near perfect and outshines everything else, but unfortunate as it is these games do not age well against the new MMO's we have today.
Now if they made DAoC 2 I'm sure it would be worth a look.
The best thing about DAoC was the lore. It was high fantasy but somehow it felt like low fantasy. A Dark Ages theme mixed with high-powered magically fueled classes is a strange, but very awesome mix. The world felt very Medieval and very immersive, even with Eldritches shooting massive beams of Rainbow Pewpew magic everywhere (or Shadow bolts... Eldritch and Champion, the only Hib classes I liked).
Nothing will come close to my Thane, who I miss, because no other game lets you call down freakin' Mjolnir on a group of scurrying Lurikeen.
My Pally was fun, even though chaining the Chants could be annoying at times. I liked the Albion/British atmosphere, but I liked my Thane as a class the most.
Whenever people talk about DAoC, they only talk about the RvR. While the RvR was great, I like DAoC for more than that.
This question pertains to those who have played Dark Ages of Camelot (DAoC). If you played DAoC you know as well as I do that the RvR system has not been succeeded by any game as of late. The complexity of Mythic's RvR system in Dark Ages of Camelot was shown through the use of the Tower and Keep system, battles including three different realms (Midgard, Hibernia, and Albian) clashing for the ownership of foreign or domestic strongholds to caputre relics yeilding power to give it's owning realm a step up in battle. Attacks on keeps and towers in which all three realms were present each bringing their own 200+ force to colide in a zerg of death. The offensive use of siege weapons to blow holes in keep walls or to raise towers, or deploying bastilas or trebuchette's in an attempt to defend your keep. Are there any games that even come close to this caliber of a game?
DAOC was a brilliant game. I played it since release. Played every realm, and almost every class up to at least Molvik.
The closest successor to this wonderful game that I have found is Darkfall, which is what I am playing now, with some ex-DAOC players. It does not quite have the same tight 8v8 circuit but there is a lot of really excellent quality group PVP and Darkfall's sieges remind me very much of DAOC.
Please.. because some liked daoc does not nor was it ever the BEST MMO! If was so good millions would still be playing it. So get over it.. its not going to happen. RVR is not , was not a huge hit then and its not now. You just love the game thats all. Sorry
First, Zeblade, in order to form a well thoughtout argument you need to sound like you know what you are talking about. You clearly do not. Also, don't make grammatical errors "If was so good millions would still be playing it."
Second, look at what happened to WoW when millions started playing it. It turned into an every man for himself society producing assholes and selfish pricks. It was so hard to find a nice helpful person. WoW = Account canceled for life.
Third, just flat out stfu.
DAoC, on the surface, was known for its three faction keep/tower based RvR system, but there is so much more to it. Starting with an extremely suitable title, Dark Age of Camelot, giving the player a feel for the game itself and not implying something it's not. For example; the most popular PvE based game with a title that implys it is PvP based, World of Warcraft aka World of Mob-stomp.
The extremely family oriented community in DAoC told players that they are vauled and needed to defend the motherland. No one was left out because when you fight two forces at once it is nice to have all the friends you can get. A key factor and one of the most primative aspects that allowed the DAoC community to connect in such a unique way was /alliance chat. Guilds befriending guilds trickling down into players befriending players. Thus strong bonds where made creating an emotional side to battle, eventhough it is just a video game.
My name is Howard Marans, and I have recently rejoined the Dark Age of Camelot development team.
I started at Mythic doing tech support a week before Camelot launched in 2001. I may have even helped some of you old-timers get the game running your first time, and you may have even gotten the honor of talking to me on the phone!
Since that time, I have worked on so many different things on Camelot that it might take more space than I'm allowed, so just to name a few: I built the terrain for the initial housing zones, as well as a handful of other areas. I worked on the initial conception of Gaheris and built most the Keep encounters. I also designed numerous encounters from the Classic World up through the Catacomb Expansion, including many of the Catacomb Adventure Wing boss fights.
During the Darkness Rising and Labyrinth of the Minotaur expansions, I was the Associate Producer for DAOC, mostly managing all of the game data asset integration (getting the art from the artists and putting it in to the game client, which our content developers would then use in the game). Shortly after the launch of LOTM, I moved to Warhammer Online to work on the build team and eventually managing it.
When I heard Camelot was re-staffing up, I thought it would be great to rejoin the team where I started my career in the gaming industry. Almost eight years later, I have returned to my roots, and I am confident that everyone will be excited for what we have in store for them!

One of the other nice things about Mythic (Pre EA, dunno what they're like now) was they way they did so much free content updates without doing it in an expansion ever 3 mins like SOE does. As I say, I dont know how or if that has changed under EA.
I've been tempted to start up my account and play on the old rules server.
Every time I think of DAOC my next thought is how Mythic could have so badly screwed up with WAR:AoR. The guy that decided that WAR should be more like WOW than DAOC should be summarily fired (maybe this was why Mark Jacobs was fired?).

Things are looking up for Dark Age of Camelot.
DAOC would need a whole new UI and updated engine to have any chance of a comeback.
